They were having a BB gun fight\n\n00:00:47:18 - 00:00:50:13\nand I got shot in the eye and then we moved and\n\n00:00:50:13 - 00:00:52:22\nwe still had our\rhouses right there on 6th and Sunset\n\n00:00:52:22 - 00:00:55:10\nand I made my way back there later.\n\n00:00:55:10 - 00:00:59:04\nMy family came from\n\n00:00:59:04 - 00:01:00:12\nCentral California,\n\n00:01:00:12 - 00:01:04:07\nfrom, first New Mexico, Central California,\n\n00:01:04:07 - 00:01:07:21\nthen West LA and Venice we came\n\n00:01:07:21 - 00:01:10:20\nabout 1915, 1916.\n\n00:01:10:20 - 00:01:13:14\nthey were in New Mexico for a while\n\n00:01:13:14 - 00:01:15:18\nand they wanted to have more opportunity.\n\n00:01:15:18 - 00:01:17:11\nThey wanted to work the fields.\n\n00:01:17:11 - 00:01:21:02\nThey were done with Las\rCruces, New Mexico,\n\n00:01:21:02 - 00:01:23:02\nwhere they had a bed and breakfast.\n\n00:01:23:02 - 00:01:25:14\nPancho Villa would come through,\rwomping and a stomping,\n\n00:01:25:14 - 00:01:29:23\nand they had little stories they\rwould tell me, about Pancho Villa coming...\n\n00:01:29:23 - 00:01:30:18\nAll the kids would hide,\n\n00:01:30:18 - 00:01:35:11\nmy grandmother would hide under the table\rand my great grandmother would have them\n\n00:01:35:11 - 00:01:39:11\ncome and stay at the bed and breakfast,\rfeed them, and they'd be on the way again.\n\n00:01:39:11 - 00:01:42:02\nAnd they all knew my great grandmother,\n\n00:01:42:02 - 00:01:46:08\nSecundina Villa and they\n\n00:01:46:08 - 00:01:47:03\ngot on a train.\n\n00:01:47:03 - 00:01:49:09\nThere was a big ole, I think a\n\n00:01:49:09 - 00:01:53:02\na Mexican American opportunity, some\rI forgot the term of it,\n\n00:01:53:02 - 00:01:57:19\nbut a lot of people were driven to, \rCentral California to work the farms.\n\n00:01:57:19 - 00:02:00:09\nAnd then they came down\rthe south, they came down south.\n\n00:02:00:09 - 00:02:03:09\nmy grandmother, Grandma Lupe,\rshe was in the 20’s\n\n00:02:03:09 - 00:02:06:19\nshe was one of the first girls\rthat had her own car.\n\n00:02:06:19 - 00:02:08:04\nIt was a wind up car.\n\n00:02:08:04 - 00:02:09:03\nI got a picture of that.\n\n00:02:09:03 - 00:02:11:07\nShe standing\rall proud in front of her car.\n\n00:02:11:07 - 00:02:14:19\nShe goes, I was the first one\rto get a car, you know,\n\n00:02:14:19 - 00:02:18:00\namongst her friends and girls around here\ron the West Side\n\n00:02:18:00 - 00:02:19:14\nyou know, to have a car.\n\n00:02:19:14 - 00:02:21:11\nOur family...\n\n00:02:21:11 - 00:02:23:20\nOh, I know my mom, my great\rgrandmother bought that,\n\n00:02:23:20 - 00:02:27:22\nmy grandmother bought that house in Venice,\n\n00:02:27:22 - 00:02:33:06\n1924, ‘25,\n\n00:02:33:06 - 00:02:35:08\nand it’s the house I live in right now.\n\n00:02:35:08 - 00:02:40:02\nI remember my Uncle Louie\rcoming to pick us up\n\n00:02:40:02 - 00:02:44:12\nand we'd go to the ruins of the POP.\n\n00:02:44:12 - 00:02:46:07\nWell, it was just\rit was just like a ruins,\n\n00:02:46:07 - 00:02:49:16\neverything was left there,\n\n00:02:49:16 - 00:02:55:00\nlike some some of the aquariums\rout in the open.  Part of the pier\n\n00:02:55:00 - 00:02:59:11\nand the planking and all that pilings,\rwhatever, just stuff shoved in the sand.\n\n00:02:59:11 - 00:03:00:12\nAnd, you know,\n\n00:03:00:12 - 00:03:05:09\nyou had to watch out because you might get\ryour foot pricked on by a piece of wood.\n\n00:03:05:09 - 00:03:08:19\nBut it was like everything was just like\rleft there, most of it.\n\n00:03:08:19 - 00:03:12:20\nAnd that, that was really fun,\rditching school, going over there\n\n00:03:12:20 - 00:03:18:17\nand just, you know,\rhanging out in the ruins of the POP and,\n\n00:03:18:17 - 00:03:20:13\nand um, and Dogtown was popping off\n\n00:03:20:13 - 00:03:24:06\nfor me, when I was a little kid\rand see everyone whizzing by.\n\n00:03:24:06 - 00:03:25:18\nI mean, I wasn't a skateboarder.\n\n00:03:25:18 - 00:03:27:17\nI couldn't surf.\n\n00:03:27:17 - 00:03:32:09\nSo, but it was it was good eye candy\rto watch all the fun stuff, you know.\n\n00:03:32:09 - 00:03:36:16\nThe Venice community around the Oakwood area, was\n\n00:03:36:16 - 00:03:40:11\nit was artsy fartsy,\rnot artsy fartsy beatnik’y, a little bit\n\n00:03:40:11 - 00:03:44:22\nmore to me consumed the neighborhood was,\n\n00:03:44:22 - 00:03:46:04\nwas the Latin\n\n00:03:46:04 - 00:03:50:08\nand the Black community was strong here\rin Oakwood and,\n\n00:03:50:08 - 00:03:52:11\nand, you know, there was,\n\n00:03:52:11 - 00:03:56:14\nthere was gangs running around and,\n\n00:03:56:14 - 00:03:57:22\nwe're talking about the 70’s\n\n00:03:57:22 - 00:04:01:15\nand it was just\n\n00:04:01:15 - 00:04:02:08\nlike everyone\n\n00:04:02:08 - 00:04:06:05\nknew their place kind of,\ryou know what I mean?\n\n00:04:06:05 - 00:04:13:17\nA lot of people didn't want to live\ror come down to Venice, you know?\n\n00:04:13:17 - 00:04:16:03\nBut when\rit got dark, it got dark at nighttime\n\n00:04:16:03 - 00:04:17:15\nyou just stay.\n\n00:04:17:15 - 00:04:20:18\nIt was, it was kind of, it was kind of\rdangerous and not going to lie, you know,\n\n00:04:20:18 - 00:04:25:09\nI seen stuff go down and like a lot of\rpeople did, you know what I mean?\n\n00:04:25:09 - 00:04:26:10\nYeah, there were skaters.\n\n00:04:26:10 - 00:04:28:09\nYeah, there was surfers and\n\n00:04:28:09 - 00:04:30:04\nand artists and everything.\n\n00:04:30:04 - 00:04:32:13\nAnd then it was like, you know,\n\n00:04:32:13 - 00:04:35:17\nthe shadier side of Venice, you know, the\n\n00:04:35:17 - 00:04:39:07\nyou had the Cripps and then Venice Trece and\n\n00:04:39:07 - 00:04:41:23\nwhen I was younger, I wasn't trying\rto be all gangster, you know, my brother\n\n00:04:41:23 - 00:04:45:01\nand, you know,\rmy two brothers did all that. And\n\n00:04:45:01 - 00:04:47:23\nI just really got into music.\n\n00:04:47:23 - 00:04:51:06\nSo I, so I would\rI would hang out with the skaters,\n\n00:04:51:06 - 00:04:57:17\nI'd hang out with the\rhomies, I'd hang out with,\n\n00:04:57:17 - 00:04:59:05\nwith the artists, the musicians\n\n00:04:59:05 - 00:05:03:17\nand, you know, I remember\rI was a little kid and we were\n\n00:05:03:17 - 00:05:06:02\nwe were walking and all of a sudden\rwe hear this band playing\n\n00:05:06:02 - 00:05:07:19\nand it just so happened to be the band\n\n00:05:07:19 - 00:05:11:23\nBlue Cheer was practicing\rin one of the garages,\n\n00:05:11:23 - 00:05:15:20\nand it just it just blew me away,\ryou know what I mean?\n\n00:05:15:20 - 00:05:18:09\nThat there was something else out there\rother than,\n\n00:05:18:09 - 00:05:22:16\nyou know, just the dark side of life\rand just violence and\n\n00:05:22:16 - 00:05:23:18\nto which I was drawn to.\n\n00:05:23:18 - 00:05:24:20\nYou know what I mean?\n\n00:05:24:20 - 00:05:27:06\n“How old were you\rwhen you first started playing music,\n\n00:05:27:06 - 00:05:28:07\nor...\n\n00:05:28:07 - 00:05:29:09\nwhat was your first instrument\n\n00:05:29:09 - 00:05:32:05\nand how old were you?”\rLike 12 years old, 12, 13.\n\n00:05:32:05 - 00:05:33:11\nBut I was already into music\n\n00:05:33:11 - 00:05:35:09\nI just didn't play,\n\n00:05:35:09 - 00:05:36:00\nyou know?\n\n00:05:36:00 - 00:05:40:20\nIt took til\rI got around 12 or 13 when I was like\n\n00:05:40:20 - 00:05:43:22\nseeing all the\rother scenes happening like, the Dogtown\n\n00:05:43:22 - 00:05:47:00\nskaters, all that group or the home,\ryou know,\n\n00:05:47:00 - 00:05:50:18\nwhatever, and just\n\n00:05:50:18 - 00:05:52:18\nthe music, playing the music, really\n\n00:05:52:18 - 00:05:56:06\nand I found the band, Led Zeppelin,\rthey were like my aha moment and more,\n\n00:05:56:06 - 00:06:00:08\nI was like, I need to get down and play\rsome of that music and learn it.\n\n00:06:00:08 - 00:06:03:12\nAnd that would be my in to hanging out\rwith these guys\n\n00:06:03:12 - 00:06:06:11\nor hanging out with these guys,\ryou know what I mean?\n\n00:06:06:11 - 00:06:08:12\nI had an older brother\rthat was a gangster.\n\n00:06:08:12 - 00:06:11:16\nI had an older brother that was in college\n\n00:06:11:16 - 00:06:15:18\nand I didn't know back then,\rbut I was getting pulled both ways.\n\n00:06:15:18 - 00:06:18:16\nI was being taught how to, you know, how,\rif I want to kill somebody,\n\n00:06:18:16 - 00:06:19:22\nI could kill somebody.\n\n00:06:19:22 - 00:06:23:04\nI was being taught\rif I wanted to, you know, go to school\n\n00:06:23:04 - 00:06:27:08\nand this is, you know, my brother\rwould take me to Rush Week at UCSB.\n\n00:06:27:08 - 00:06:30:18\nI got another brother showing me,\ryou know, this how you do this and this\n\n00:06:30:18 - 00:06:32:17\nhow you do that.\n\n00:06:32:17 - 00:06:35:16\nAnd but like, music saved my life.\n\n00:06:35:16 - 00:06:40:17\nAnd I got, that was the thing in between\rthose two pulls was the music.\n\n00:06:40:17 - 00:06:43:18\nI saw, went and saw The Song Remains the Same\n\n00:06:43:18 - 00:06:45:09\nin ‘75 or ’76\n\n00:06:45:09 - 00:06:48:15\nand I remember you had to pay\ra candy wrapper to go, to go see\n\n00:06:48:15 - 00:06:52:06\nat the Criterion Theater in Santa\rMonica. Paid my candy wrapper.\n\n00:06:52:06 - 00:06:54:11\nAnd I remember walking out\rit was daylight was a matinee\n\n00:06:54:11 - 00:06:57:01\nand I was like, the fuck did I just see\n\n00:06:57:01 - 00:06:58:18\nand I just knew then and there.\n\n00:06:58:18 - 00:07:00:20\nI wanted to do music,\ryou know what I mean?\n\n00:07:00:20 - 00:07:04:03\nI really focused, I saved my money,\n\n00:07:04:03 - 00:07:04:21\nyou know?\n\n00:07:04:21 - 00:07:10:04\nI joined Suicidal Tendencies\rin the summer of 1981,\n\n00:07:10:04 - 00:07:13:14\nand they were already a band\n\n00:07:13:14 - 00:07:16:11\nfor like a year or so before me.\n\n00:07:16:11 - 00:07:19:04\nSo, I joined Suicidal Tendencies in 1981.\n\n00:07:19:04 - 00:07:23:11\nSo.\r“Was they're already at punk scene happening in Venice?”\n\n00:07:23:11 - 00:07:25:18\nYeah, but it was really, really underground.\n\n00:07:25:18 - 00:07:29:03\nIt, it hadn’t uh...\n\n00:07:29:03 - 00:07:31:16\nit hadn’t raised to what it was,\n\n00:07:31:16 - 00:07:32:14\nand settled.\n\n00:07:32:14 - 00:07:36:08\nBut, there was a scene and,\n\n00:07:36:08 - 00:07:37:23\nit was fun, right when I got it and I dove\n\n00:07:37:23 - 00:07:42:04\nin, you know, head first.\n\n00:07:42:04 - 00:07:45:12\nSo, there was nobody in front of us,\rso we were kind of trail...\n\n00:07:45:12 - 00:07:50:14\nI didn't realize we were kind of\rdoing our own thing, trailblazing and, and\n\n00:07:50:14 - 00:07:53:03\nnobody told us to behave.\n\n00:07:53:03 - 00:07:55:01\nSo we're just, we were buck wild.\n\n00:07:55:01 - 00:07:59:00\nAnd, but after that first record came out,\n\n00:07:59:00 - 00:08:02:11\nwe set a bar, Suicidal Tendencies,\rwe set a bar,\n\n00:08:02:11 - 00:08:06:03\nand all the bands that we open up,\rwe were opening for before,\n\n00:08:06:03 - 00:08:08:03\nthey were now opening up for us.\n\n00:08:08:03 - 00:08:09:18\nWe had a song on the radio.\n\n00:08:09:18 - 00:08:12:06\nI was, uh, just turned 20.\n\n00:08:12:06 - 00:08:16:22\nI was 19 when I recorded it, and um,\n\n00:08:16:22 - 00:08:19:01\noh man, it was fun as hell.\n\n00:08:19:01 - 00:08:19:13\nIt was fun as hell,\n\n00:08:19:13 - 00:08:23:11\n‘cause we had a song on the radio, we were,\rwe knew the riff raff around\n\n00:08:23:11 - 00:08:27:14\nthe neighborhood, we knew all the Dogtown’ers \rand all the, you know, skaters,\n\n00:08:27:14 - 00:08:30:03\nand... it was just great times\n\n00:08:30:03 - 00:08:32:12\nin the early eighties.\n\n00:08:32:12 - 00:08:35:21\nIt was an explosion,\ryou know, the punk scene exploded\n\n00:08:35:21 - 00:08:39:18\nand, and the next thing you know, I didn't\rwant to hear anything else.\n\n00:08:39:18 - 00:08:44:09\nYou know. I was all, I was in tune with\rwhat was going on right then and there.\n\n00:08:44:09 - 00:08:48:17\nBands like Beowulf and No Mercy and\n\n00:08:48:17 - 00:08:49:08\nExcel,\n\n00:08:49:08 - 00:08:54:03\nNo, No Reaction...\n\n00:08:54:03 - 00:08:56:19\n“Were you guys friends, or were you, you know, like you were...”\n\n00:08:56:19 - 00:08:58:21\nYeah, we're all friends, we all knew each other, oh yeah,\r\n\n00:08:58:21 - 00:08:59:08\nyou know, we had the\n\n00:08:59:08 - 00:09:03:15\nWelcome to Venice, the first one where\rwe did a compilation of all these bands\n\n00:09:03:15 - 00:09:08:11\nof Venice bands, and umm...\n\n00:09:08:11 - 00:09:09:07\nthat was the scene,\n\n00:09:09:07 - 00:09:14:11\nit was a, it's a big old scene,\rthe Venice punk rock scene,\n\n00:09:14:11 - 00:09:15:22\nthat ended up,\n\n00:09:15:22 - 00:09:20:19\nlike, crossing over.\rPunk rock to crossover metal.\n\n00:09:20:19 - 00:09:23:18\nAnd, supposedly that first album was\n\n00:09:23:18 - 00:09:26:14\nis a big crossover type band.\n\n00:09:26:14 - 00:09:31:02\nAnd, you know,\rpeople told me that we started that so,\n\n00:09:31:02 - 00:09:32:03\nthe crossover.\n\n00:09:32:03 - 00:09:35:05\nSo punk rock, people think it's crossover,\n\n00:09:35:05 - 00:09:39:12\nyou know, again, the rock and roll\rthat started it, you know what I mean?\n\n00:09:39:12 - 00:09:44:07\nI think...and um, we go on those early tours,\n\n00:09:44:07 - 00:09:47:14\nand if you, if you brought up\rVenice, Venice Beach or Santa Monica\n\n00:09:47:14 - 00:09:48:20\nthat, whoa, you know what I mean?\n\n00:09:48:20 - 00:09:54:00\n‘Cause people were just, that was a dream\rfor a lot of people to like, to come down,\n\n00:09:54:00 - 00:09:58:08\ngo to the beach or hang out\rwith the skaters or you know what I mean?\n\n00:09:58:08 - 00:09:59:04\nAnd I remember being\n\n00:09:59:04 - 00:10:00:03\nyoung and being like,\n\n00:10:00:03 - 00:10:04:16\nyou know, on our first tour, I was like, 20,\rgo on these big ass sold out tours and,\n\n00:10:04:16 - 00:10:07:07\nyou know, the minute you said Venice\rBeach, you know, you got attention,\n\n00:10:07:07 - 00:10:11:03\nyou know, you know, we’re from Venice,\ryou know.  It had a name,\n\n00:10:11:03 - 00:10:15:16\nthe skaters, the street life, the culture,\ryou know what I mean?\n\n00:10:15:16 - 00:10:17:00\nIt was poppin’.\n\n00:10:17:00 - 00:10:19:22\nI saw things shifted in Venice\n\n00:10:19:22 - 00:10:23:23\nin the, probably in the late ‘90’s,\ra little gentrification type thing, right?\n\n00:10:23:23 - 00:10:29:12\nAnd people just,\n\n00:10:29:12 - 00:10:32:03\nstarted selling their houses and\n\n00:10:32:03 - 00:10:36:06\nthey thought $350,000 was like,\rthe, winning the lotto,\n\n00:10:36:06 - 00:10:39:15\nyou know what I mean?\n\n00:10:39:15 - 00:10:41:11\n“You still kept your family house?\n\n00:10:41:11 - 00:10:43:09\nYou still have your family house?”\n\n00:10:43:09 - 00:10:44:08\nYeah.\n\n00:10:44:08 - 00:10:45:18\n“Your family resisted that,\n\n00:10:45:18 - 00:10:48:18\nthat urge, that push to make themselves...”\n\n00:10:48:18 - 00:10:51:04\nYeah.
