00:01:06:06\nPeace Press was formed out\rof the resistance and SDS ( Students For aDemocratic Society), you know, when,\n\n00:01:06:06 - 00:01:12:04\nduring the Vietnam War, people didn't\rwant to print what what we wanted to say.\n\n00:01:12:04 - 00:01:14:13\nYou couldn't get a\rcommercial printer to do that.\n\n00:01:14:13 - 00:01:17:16\nSo a guy named Jerry Palmer from the SDS,\n\n00:01:17:16 - 00:01:21:09\nhe bought a press.\rHe’s kind of a physical genius.\n\n00:01:21:09 - 00:01:24:02\nHe put it together,\rtaught himself  how to print.\n\n00:01:24:02 - 00:01:26:10\nAnd then he taught us how to print.\n\n00:01:26:10 - 00:01:29:10\n\rMy version of the SDS and the resistance.\n\n00:01:29:10 - 00:01:31:23\nThe resistance were people who,\n\n00:01:31:23 - 00:01:37:02\ntook it on upon themselves\rto not cooperate with the draft.\n\n00:01:37:02 - 00:01:41:19\nAnd taking personal\rresponsibility by refusing to register\n\n00:01:41:19 - 00:01:46:10\nor turning in your draft cards\rand taking steps from there, like\n\n00:01:46:10 - 00:01:51:20\nsocial change happens when you go up\rto that place that holds you in with fear.\n\n00:01:51:20 - 00:01:55:02\nSome new law\rlike you can't burn your draft card,\n\n00:01:55:02 - 00:01:59:08\nyou can't desecrate the flag,\rand you decide to step over that line.\n\n00:01:59:08 - 00:02:00:20\nThat's where it starts.\n\n00:02:00:20 - 00:02:04:02\nIf you don't step over that line,\rthere's no social change.\n\n00:02:04:02 - 00:02:05:02\nPeriod.\n\n00:02:05:02 - 00:02:06:05\nSo that's what we did.\n\n00:02:06:05 - 00:02:08:04\nAnd they called me for a physical.\n\n00:02:08:04 - 00:02:20:03\nThen you wait for your indictment.\n\n00:02:20:03 - 00:02:22:05\nAnd this is what people did.\n\n00:02:22:05 - 00:02:26:03\nAnd we had a commune\rdowntown at at the time. And,\n\n00:02:27:19 - 00:02:28:14\nfour of the\n\n00:02:28:14 - 00:02:32:14\npeople in my house\rall had the same Federal Judge,\n\n00:02:32:14 - 00:02:36:11\nJudge Harry Pregerson,\rthe best judge in the U.S.\n\n00:02:36:11 - 00:02:40:04\nHe's right up there with\rRuth Bader Ginsburg.\n\n00:02:40:22 - 00:02:43:12\nSo, you know, people would go to prison.\n\n00:02:43:12 - 00:02:47:17\nAnd, I was fortunate to not go to prison.\n\n00:02:47:17 - 00:02:50:21\nWell, we had Greg Nelson,\rwe had Bill Garroway,\n\n00:02:50:21 - 00:02:54:19\nWinter Dellenbach,\rMike Swartz, Richard Profumo.\n\n00:02:54:19 - 00:02:57:04\nI moved in, like, after my trial.\n\n00:02:57:04 - 00:02:59:03\nI moved into the canals. So...\n\n00:02:59:03 - 00:03:04:05\nbut you know, those of us who are not in\rjail were still actively doing things.\n\n00:03:04:05 - 00:03:05:17\nSo we had,\n\n00:03:05:17 - 00:03:09:01\nthose are just people that I know\rfrom the resistance that were in Venice.\n\n00:03:09:01 - 00:03:12:04\nNow the SDS, their position was\n\n00:03:12:04 - 00:03:14:23\nwe represent the masses.\n\n00:03:14:23 - 00:03:16:08\nWe can do whatever we want.\n\n00:03:16:08 - 00:03:18:22\nYou know, they would\rcome in and use the press.\n\n00:03:18:22 - 00:03:22:19\nWe had a little baby deck and then they\rwould, they wouldn't clean the ink off.\n\n00:03:22:19 - 00:03:26:01\nThey would just leave\rbecause we're, we’re the SDS.\n\n00:03:26:01 - 00:03:28:07\nWe represent the masses.\n\n00:03:28:07 - 00:04:49:18\nAnd, they uh...\n\n00:04:49:18 - 00:04:52:14\nOne of them went to\rArizona to buy dynamite\n\n00:04:52:14 - 00:04:57:00\nbecause they were planning\rto blow up the ROTC building at UCLA.\n\n00:04:57:00 - 00:05:00:08\nSo the government came\rafter them with an indictment.\n\n00:05:00:08 - 00:05:03:20\nThis is uh, the uh, transcript.\n\n00:05:03:20 - 00:05:06:23\nIt says, “There is intensive\rpolice surveillance of the \n\n00:05:06:23 - 00:05:12:10\nOcean Front walk house, including agents\rstaked out to watch it 12 hours a day,\n\n00:05:12:10 - 00:05:16:19\nobvious telephone taps,\rfilming it from a nearby lifeguard tower,\n\n00:05:16:19 - 00:05:19:16\npeople leaving it being followed, etc...\n\n00:05:19:16 - 00:05:22:21\nLee and her ex husband Carl,\rwho lives elsewhere,\n\n00:05:22:21 - 00:05:24:15\nare the legal owners of the house.”\n\n00:05:24:15 - 00:05:29:06\nWe knew there was surveillance\rand so we would meet on the beach with uhh..   \n\n00:05:29:06 - 00:05:30:19\nuhh....\n\n00:05:30:19 - 00:05:33:00\nlawyers like Carson,\n\n00:05:33:00 - 00:05:37:16\nTaylor from People's College of Law,\rand we’d meet on the beach\n\n00:05:37:16 - 00:05:41:17\nbecause they knew the government\rhad boom mics and they were listening in.\n\n00:05:41:17 - 00:05:44:19\nSo you didn't meet in any house, anywhere.\n\n00:05:44:19 - 00:05:47:16\nAnd they would,\rthey would talk to people out there.\n\n00:05:47:16 - 00:05:50:23\nAnd some nights we would\rsit up in a house on Third Street\n\n00:05:50:23 - 00:05:53:23\non the porch, because people's\rtires were getting slashed.\n\n00:05:54:02 - 00:05:58:17\nSo people would sit on the porch with\rshotguns waiting to see what would happen.\n\n00:05:58:17 -
