00:00:08:02\nSo everyone wants to know my name?\n\n00:00:08:02 - 00:00:13:16\nI think they know a lot of it, but\rI meet a lot of people on a daily basis.\n\n00:00:13:16 - 00:00:18:03\nAnd even though they know my image,\rthey don't know my name.\n\n00:00:18:03 - 00:00:21:06\nThe name that I ended up with\n\n00:00:21:06 - 00:00:26:06\nbecause my father, my mother\rdidn't want me to be called the junior.\n\n00:00:26:06 - 00:00:31:19\nSo I was because I was basically\rthe same name as my father is Harry.\n\n00:00:31:19 - 00:00:33:16\nSo I'm Harry Perry.\n\n00:00:33:16 - 00:00:35:01\nWell, it took me a long time\n\n00:00:35:01 - 00:00:38:16\nto live in Venice,\rbut I used to hitchhike into  Hollywood.\n\n00:00:38:16 - 00:00:40:06\nThat was one of my songs.\n\n00:00:40:06 - 00:00:43:12\nI made one of my first vinyl records\n\n00:00:43:12 - 00:00:47:15\nbecause I would hitchhike back and forth\rfrom Laurel Canyon to Venice.\n\n00:00:47:15 - 00:00:52:08\nBut the thing about Venice,\rpeople always come to the beach\n\n00:00:52:08 - 00:00:55:05\nand the air was better than on Hollywood\rBoulevard.\n\n00:00:55:05 - 00:00:56:02\nHollywood Boulevard.\n\n00:00:56:02 - 00:01:02:03\nThose buses spewed out black smoke\rand you were breathing it all day.\n\n00:01:02:03 - 00:01:05:19\nThis kid made me come to the beach.\n\n00:01:05:19 - 00:01:08:20\nWe were hanging out at the Rainbow.\n\n00:01:08:20 - 00:01:11:07\nAnd it was just amazing to me\n\n00:01:11:07 - 00:01:16:15\nthat there were so many people just like\rwalking in the streets at the beach.\n\n00:01:16:15 - 00:01:18:16\nIt was like a realization.\n\n00:01:18:16 - 00:01:24:05\nSo it was in April of 74\rthat I really transformed my energy\n\n00:01:24:05 - 00:01:28:09\nfrom downtown Hollywood\rto hanging out in Venice Beach.\n\n00:01:28:09 - 00:01:33:00\nI remember one of the main musicians\rthat I saw\n\n00:01:33:00 - 00:01:38:03\nwho had just been here\rsince 1945 was Uncle Bill.\n\n00:01:38:03 - 00:01:40:09\nUncle Bill played blues,\n\n00:01:40:09 - 00:01:43:03\nand I guess he was part of the President's\n\n00:01:43:03 - 00:01:46:07\nSecret Service, but retired.\n\n00:01:46:07 - 00:01:49:14\nAnd as time went\ron, I remembered that he was blind.\n\n00:01:49:14 - 00:01:53:15\nBut he there used to be a place\rcalled the Card House\n\n00:01:53:15 - 00:01:56:12\nright now where the basketball court is\n\n00:01:56:12 - 00:02:00:14\nat 18th Street\rand all everyone would get together.\n\n00:02:00:14 - 00:02:02:04\nThe old\n\n00:02:02:04 - 00:02:03:17\nblack men\n\n00:02:03:17 - 00:02:08:15\nand some white men and play poker\ror I don't know,\n\n00:02:08:15 - 00:02:09:23\nI didn't play cards with them,\n\n00:02:09:23 - 00:02:13:01\nso I'm not exactly sure what games\rthey were playing.\n\n00:02:13:01 - 00:02:16:08\nBut one thing I did notice was Uncle Bill\n\n00:02:16:08 - 00:02:19:13\nwould go there and play the blues,\n\n00:02:19:13 - 00:02:22:12\nand so he was one of the\rthe first musicians\n\n00:02:22:12 - 00:02:26:03\nthat was consistently\rplaying at Venice Beach.\n\n00:02:26:03 - 00:02:28:18\nSo it was his.\n\n00:02:28:18 - 00:02:31:23\nIt was he was one of my inspirations\n\n00:02:31:23 - 00:02:35:09\nfor playing at Venice Beach often\rin order to be an artist.\n\n00:02:35:09 - 00:02:39:03\nLook, I can call up and get a booking\rif I'm not going to travel\n\n00:02:39:03 - 00:02:42:14\nfrom city to city, which is like,\n\n00:02:42:14 - 00:02:45:08\nyou know, sort of difficult,\n\n00:02:45:08 - 00:02:46:10\nthen what am I doing?\n\n00:02:46:10 - 00:02:50:12\nYou call up, you're going to get 45\rminutes, 30 days from now.\n\n00:02:50:12 - 00:02:53:18\nHow how do you live that way?\n\n00:02:53:18 - 00:02:55:04\nThere's no way to live that way.\n\n00:02:55:04 - 00:03:00:22\nBut the beaches here year round\rand the weather here is\n\n00:03:00:22 - 00:03:05:19\nyou can actually exist as a musician year\rround at Venice Beach.\n\n00:03:05:19 - 00:03:08:13\nIs There are lots of different aspects to\n\n00:03:08:13 - 00:03:11:15\nto me, I've put this on not to play it,\n\n00:03:11:15 - 00:03:15:04\nbut my first battery pack\n\n00:03:15:04 - 00:03:19:08\nthere was a guy who saw me playing\rand I used to have a backpack\n\n00:03:19:08 - 00:03:23:19\nand the pig nose had like six\rrechargeable batteries\n\n00:03:23:19 - 00:03:28:14\nthat you could put in or six\rlike double A cells.\n\n00:03:28:14 - 00:03:30:09\nThat's what would take it too.\n\n00:03:30:09 - 00:03:34:16\nBut they only lasted for like an hour\rand then they would be dead.\n\n00:03:34:16 - 00:03:37:09\nSo then I started\rusing rechargeable cells,\n\n00:03:37:09 - 00:03:43:12\nso I had socks for the charge cells\rand the the already used cells.\n\n00:03:43:12 - 00:03:48:10\nI just let float in\rthe backpack and the backrack\n\n00:03:48:10 - 00:03:51:10\nI it's the shuffle, the stuff all day\rlong.\n\n00:03:51:10 - 00:03:53:17\nAnd Mr. Gee, I can remember his name.\n\n00:03:53:17 - 00:03:54:12\nHe owned G\u0026M\n\n00:03:54:12 - 00:03:57:20\n Power Products\rsaw me going through this\n\n00:03:57:20 - 00:04:02:09\nand took me in his Rolls-Royce\rup to Hollywood\n\n00:04:02:09 - 00:04:05:09\nto meet Fred, who was the engineer\n\n00:04:05:09 - 00:04:08:06\nand engineered me, engineered for me.\n\n00:04:08:06 - 00:04:10:03\nThe first\n\n00:04:10:03 - 00:04:16:01\npower pack with nicad batteries.\n\n00:04:16:01 - 00:04:20:07\nAnd that's what gave me,\rlike this whole new perspective where\n\n00:04:20:07 - 00:04:25:13\nI could just play music for days\rand not worry about battery power.\n\n00:04:25:13 - 00:04:28:09\nIt was like becoming a superman.\n\n00:04:28:09 - 00:04:34:15\nNow. roller skates started during\rthe roller revolution in 1976.\n\n00:04:34:15 - 00:04:37:00\nThat was when there were so many people\n\n00:04:37:00 - 00:04:43:20\nputting on skates.\rBreeze Ave wasn’t a building, it was a parking lot.\n\n00:04:43:20 - 00:04:49:03\nAnd they had like benches and companies\rwould come down and rent skates there.\n\n00:04:49:03 - 00:04:53:04\nThere were so many people skating that\rthe city now, right now it's cement.\n\n00:04:53:04 - 00:04:55:12\nIt used to be black asphalt.\n\n00:04:55:12 - 00:05:02:04\nThey had a line,\rThis is bureaucrats for you. They had a line\r \n\n00:05:02:04 - 00:05:04:23\nwhere you literally police\rare trying to enforce.\n\n00:05:04:23 - 00:05:08:01\nYou have to skate on one side\rand walk on the other.\n\n00:05:08:01 - 00:05:10:12\nI used to just laugh at that\rbecause something was\n\n00:05:10:12 - 00:05:13:09\nthey always make laws\rthat are completely unenforceable.\n\n00:05:13:09 - 00:05:17:13\nAnd that's when I really had\rthe realization that stuff was political,\n\n00:05:17:13 - 00:05:20:10\nhad nothing to do\rwith anything that made sense in reality.\n\n00:05:20:10 - 00:05:23:22\nI used to start at Lifeguard Station 26\n\n00:05:23:22 - 00:05:27:12\nand walk almost to the pier and back.\n\n00:05:27:12 - 00:05:32:03\nAnd that process\rsometimes would take me just forever.\n\n00:05:32:03 - 00:05:35:08\nAnd suddenly with skates on, I had a\n\n00:05:35:08 - 00:05:39:14\nthis whole brand new experience\rwhere I could just roll\n\n00:05:39:14 - 00:05:43:00\nand just meet so many people\rand engage with\n\n00:05:43:00 - 00:05:48:23\nso many different areas\ralong the ocean front walk quickly.\n\n00:05:48:23 - 00:05:50:11\nIt was just so amazing\n\n00:05:50:11 - 00:05:54:04\nand was just like floating\ron a conveyor belt\n\n00:05:54:04 - 00:05:56:20\nto play guitar and play music\n\n00:05:56:20 - 00:06:01:07\nand stuff and sing to the to,\ra person or group of people\n\n00:06:01:07 - 00:06:05:01\nand just like have this moving\n\n00:06:05:01 - 00:06:07:22\nliquid experience all the time.\n\n00:06:07:22 - 00:06:11:07\nI felt like just part of it,\n\n00:06:11:07 - 00:06:12:21\npart of the whole,\n\n00:06:12:21 - 00:06:16:20\nyou know, social situation with skates on.\n\n00:06:16:20 - 00:06:18:20\nIt was something that I wanted to do.\n\n00:06:18:20 - 00:06:23:05\nusually want what people discuss with me\n\n00:06:23:05 - 00:06:27:01\nnow, because I've been there for so long,\n\n00:06:27:01 - 00:06:29:05\nis I'm not telling them a story.\n\n00:06:29:05 - 00:06:33:10\nA lot of times\rI end up not playing very much.\n\n00:06:33:10 - 00:06:38:01\nThey tell me\rwhat their experience of Venice was,\n\n00:06:38:01 - 00:06:39:20\nhow they moved here,\n\n00:06:39:20 - 00:06:44:03\nthat they remember me,\rand that they want a picture with me, or\n\n00:06:44:03 - 00:06:49:11\nbecause their son died in Iraq\ror all kinds of stories.\n\n00:06:49:11 - 00:06:54:01\nThey tell me their story\rand they want pictures of me now.\n\n00:06:54:01 - 00:06:58:18\nAnd a lot of times\rthey'll show me pictures of me with them\n\n00:06:58:18 - 00:06:59:21\n30 years ago.\n\n00:06:59:21 - 00:07:03:07\nwe're talking like 50 years of time,\n\n00:07:03:07 - 00:07:05:02\nyou know, that's a lot of time.\n\n00:07:05:02 - 00:07:08:05\nWhat have you done for 50 years?\n\n00:07:08:05 - 00:07:11:15\nI've always been a street performer\n\n00:07:11:15 - 00:07:16:09\nbecause I've done huge movies\rand played myself\n\n00:07:16:09 - 00:07:20:17\nor sometimes or play a bit part\rwhere I have two words.\n\n00:07:20:17 - 00:07:23:19\nBut that was always over.\n\n00:07:23:19 - 00:07:26:09\nThat came to an end.\n\n00:07:26:09 - 00:07:29:21\nI've I've toured with bands.\n\n00:07:29:21 - 00:07:31:09\nThose things come to an end.\n\n00:07:31:09 - 00:07:32:13\nThe bands will break up.\n\n00:07:32:13 - 00:07:37:13\nSomeone would die in the band,\rmanager would leave, take all the money.\n\n00:07:37:13 - 00:07:40:06\nBut the boardwalk was still here.\n\n00:07:40:06 - 00:07:41:02\nRestaurants.\n\n00:07:41:02 - 00:07:43:00\nI had friends that worked at restaurants.\n\n00:07:43:00 - 00:07:46:15\nThose restaurants\rdon't even exist anymore.\n\n00:07:46:15 - 00:07:48:13\nThe boardwalk is still here.\n\n00:07:48:13 - 00:07:50:21\nPeople come to the beach,\n\n00:07:50:21 - 00:07:54:15\nwinter, summer holidays.\n\n00:07:54:15 - 00:07:57:15\nThe beach is still here.\n\n00:07:57:15 - 00:07:59:23\nThat is the ultimate job security.\n\n00:07:59:23 - 00:08:04:00\nI can make music and spread it around\n\n00:08:04:00 - 00:08:06:11\nand do dances and performances\n\n00:08:06:11 - 00:08:10:04\nand collect money and live and exist.\n\n00:08:10:04 - 00:08:16:08\nAnd I don't have to ask permission to do\rit, although that is amazing\n\n00:08:16:08 - 00:08:16:22\nright there.\n\n00:08:16:22 - 00:08:17:20\nThat's what Venice says.\n\n00:08:17:20 - 00:08:20:14\nYou can be an artist\n\n00:08:20:14 - 00:08:22:22\nand you don't want to ask\rpermission to be an artist.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://veniceheritagemuseum.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2416/collection_resources/108837/file/222013#t=0.0,524.43733"}]}]}]}
