That's the sky.\n\n00:01:24:02 - 00:01:27:01\nI guess I'll go down to the beach\n\n00:01:27:01 - 00:01:30:11\nand see how that part of Venice is.\n\n00:01:30:13 - 00:01:36:23\nAnd I went down for Sunset,\rthe first of 9000 sunsets\n\n00:01:36:23 - 00:01:38:08\nand went out to the edge\n\n00:01:38:08 - 00:01:41:08\nof the water and watched the sun go down.\n\n00:01:41:08 - 00:01:44:21\nAnd just as the sun went down,\n\n00:01:44:21 - 00:01:49:05\nthe people up and down the beach\rapplauded,\n\n00:01:49:05 - 00:01:51:11\nthe sun going down.\n\n00:01:51:11 - 00:01:55:05\nAnd I thought, hmmm, this place\rmight have some potential.\n\n00:01:55:05 - 00:01:59:17\nThey applauded the sun setting.\n\n00:01:59:17 - 00:02:03:12\nSo I said, I guess\rI'll stay and see how long it lasts.\n\n00:02:03:12 - 00:02:05:19\nAnd I stayed 25 years.\n\n00:02:05:19 - 00:02:08:11\nVenice was...uh...\n\n00:02:08:11 - 00:02:10:08\na new experience for me\n\n00:02:10:08 - 00:02:12:02\nwhen I came.\n\n00:02:12:02 - 00:02:16:04\nI saw and interacted with people\n\n00:02:16:04 - 00:02:19:14\nthat I hadn't done in my previous life.\n\n00:02:19:14 - 00:02:22:10\nUmmm, more people of color, um...\n\n00:02:22:10 - 00:02:24:11\ndifferent categories\n\n00:02:24:11 - 00:02:27:11\nof people, different foods.\n\n00:02:27:11 - 00:02:32:03\nI'd never had an avocado\rgrowing up in New England.\n\n00:02:32:05 - 00:02:34:18\nSo there was different foods.\n\n00:02:34:18 - 00:02:38:02\nThe community was very thick\n\n00:02:38:04 - 00:02:42:00\nas far as defending itself\ragainst development.\n\n00:02:42:02 - 00:02:45:20\nThe local politics was active\n\n00:02:45:21 - 00:02:48:20\nand I blended into that already\n\n00:02:48:20 - 00:02:52:16\ngoing, ongoing political struggle.\n\n00:02:52:16 - 00:02:55:15\nThe first two years I lived in Oakwood\n\n00:02:55:15 - 00:02:58:23\nat 618 Westminster Avenue\n\n00:02:58:23 - 00:03:00:20\nwith two other Vista volunteers.\n\n00:03:00:20 - 00:03:03:02\nWe had three guys\rwho were in that apartment.\n\n00:03:03:02 - 00:03:08:13\nWe worked with other people\rto establish the Venice Family Clinic.\n\n00:03:08:15 - 00:03:12:06\nI worked with Stan Trimble from UCLA,\n\n00:03:12:06 - 00:03:15:13\nwho, and the Venice Clinic,\n\n00:03:15:13 - 00:03:20:00\nwhich was on the corner of Lincoln\rand Venice at that time.\n\n00:03:20:00 - 00:03:23:05\nAnd I did anything\rthat anything that related to health\n\n00:03:23:05 - 00:03:28:00\nor that would help\rpeople have a healthier life.\n\n00:03:28:00 - 00:03:32:10\nWe did, mostly it was\n\n00:03:32:10 - 00:03:34:10\nwell, a lot of it was health related,\n\n00:03:34:10 - 00:03:37:02\nand some of it was \rsimply development related.\n\n00:03:37:02 - 00:03:39:22\nThe first thing for people's\rhealth was to be able\n\n00:03:39:22 - 00:03:42:22\nto stay where they were\rand not be evicted.\n\n00:03:42:22 - 00:03:48:09\nThe purpose of my program\rand my posting in Venice\n\n00:03:48:09 - 00:03:51:08\nwas to help low income people.\n\n00:03:51:08 - 00:03:55:22\nAnd so I began to see those people\n\n00:03:55:22 - 00:03:59:00\nand I began to\n\n00:03:59:00 - 00:04:00:16\nsee that there various kinds.\n\n00:04:00:16 - 00:04:01:15\nThere were various kinds.\n\n00:04:01:15 - 00:04:05:03\nThere are some people, low income\rbecause of racial discrimination.\n\n00:04:05:03 - 00:04:08:09\nThere were elderly Jews\rat the Israel Levin Center\n\n00:04:08:09 - 00:04:11:03\nwho were low income\rfor a different reason.\n\n00:04:11:03 - 00:04:14:17\nThere were all kinds of discrimination.\n\n00:04:14:17 - 00:04:18:21\nAnd I found that\rthere were people all around me\n\n00:04:18:21 - 00:04:22:21\nthat were actually just hanging on\rby their fingernails.\n\n00:04:22:21 - 00:04:26:18\nAnd that was\rthat was an interesting lesson\n\n00:04:26:18 - 00:04:30:21\nto learn about economics and how\n\n00:04:30:21 - 00:04:34:00\noverlooked people are\raround us all the time.\n\n00:04:34:00 - 00:04:36:10\nI went to a meeting as\n\n00:04:36:10 - 00:04:40:13\nas the Vista and health issues,\n\n00:04:40:13 - 00:04:44:10\nwent to a meeting at Broadway Elementary\n\n00:04:44:10 - 00:04:47:16\nthat was between\n\n00:04:47:16 - 00:04:51:03\nOakwood residents and activists\n\n00:04:51:03 - 00:04:54:05\nand people from the city's\n\n00:04:54:05 - 00:04:57:05\nhealth bureaucracy.\n\n00:04:57:05 - 00:05:01:00\nAnd the people in Oakwood were\n\n00:05:01:00 - 00:05:05:06\narguing for greater participation\rand to be listened to\n\n00:05:05:06 - 00:05:09:05\nand to have services that were available\n\n00:05:09:05 - 00:05:12:21\nmore hours so that people\rcould take advantage of them.\n\n00:05:12:21 - 00:05:16:06\nAnd there was a heated debate\n\n00:05:16:06 - 00:05:19:07\nbetween America who worked in\n\n00:05:19:07 - 00:05:22:17\nVenice, was a local organizer.\n\n00:05:22:17 - 00:05:26:07\nThe heated exchange\rbetween America Donovan\n\n00:05:26:07 - 00:05:29:07\nand some of the \rrepresentatives of the city.\n\n00:05:29:07 - 00:05:33:05\nAnd at one point in the debate,\n\n00:05:33:05 - 00:05:38:08\nsome of the city representatives\rhad said, said something that\n\n00:05:38:08 - 00:05:41:10\nAmerica didn't like,\n\n00:05:41:10 - 00:05:44:22\nand uh, she got stood up\n\n00:05:44:22 - 00:05:48:14\nand put her foot on the chair\rthat she had been sitting at\n\n00:05:48:14 - 00:05:52:20\nand then stood up on the table\rwith all the people\n\n00:05:52:20 - 00:05:58:07\ngathered around the table\rand went down the end of the table\n\n00:05:58:07 - 00:06:00:01\nand stood in front\n\n00:06:00:01 - 00:06:04:09\nof the representative of the city\rand turned around\n\n00:06:04:09 - 00:06:09:18\nand whipped up her dress and said,\r“You can kiss my black ass.”\n\n00:06:09:18 - 00:06:14:05\nWell, I hadn't seen anybody do that before.\n\n00:06:14:05 - 00:06:16:18\nUh, that was, that was that was really\n\n00:06:16:18 - 00:06:19:22\nI guess the word they used\rnow is bodacious.\n\n00:06:19:22 - 00:06:22:09\nThat was a pretty bodacious act.\n\n00:06:22:09 - 00:06:27:13\nAnd I was, realized,\rhey, I'm out of my comfort zone here.\n\n00:06:27:13 - 00:06:30:02\nThis is, I'm in a\n\n00:06:30:02 - 00:06:34:13\na behavior pattern\rthat is totally alien to me.\n\n00:06:34:13 - 00:06:36:04\nI really don't know.\n\n00:06:36:04 - 00:06:40:04\nI was a nice,\rpolite boy. You didn't do that.\n\n00:06:40:04 - 00:06:41:07\nBut she\n\n00:06:41:07 - 00:06:45:01\nwas just one of many Venice characters\rwho let it hang out.\n\n00:06:45:01 - 00:06:48:02\nMy perspective was shaped by the people\n\n00:06:48:02 - 00:06:51:11\nwho are already here\rand fighting for Venice.\n\n00:06:51:11 - 00:06:53:04\nThey were\n\n00:06:53:04 - 00:06:58:21\nfrequently drastic, desperate,\n\n00:06:58:21 - 00:07:01:03\ndidn't have\n\n00:07:01:03 - 00:07:05:14\na representative \rof their point of view, at all.\n\n00:07:05:16 - 00:07:10:15\nAnd I learned that\rif you want to get some attention,\n\n00:07:10:15 - 00:07:16:12\nyou have to be a little bit dramatic\rand not too polite and not\n\n00:07:16:12 - 00:07:19:06\ninfinitely patient.\n\n00:07:19:06 - 00:07:23:02\nAnd you have to hold people accountable\rto what they had said, etc..\n\n00:07:23:02 - 00:07:28:05\nSo, uh, the Venice veterans\n\n00:07:28:05 - 00:07:32:05\nat that time, they were veterans\rand I was the newcomer.\n\n00:07:32:05 - 00:07:35:02\nThe Venice veterans taught me\n\n00:07:35:02 - 00:07:38:04\nthey did anything\rthat would keep me in Venice\n\n00:07:38:04 - 00:07:43:20\nif there was an employment\rinside of a one mile square block,\n\n00:07:43:20 - 00:07:44:22\nI'd do it.\n\n00:07:44:22 - 00:07:46:17\n“So you had gotten the Venice bug?”\n\n00:07:46:17 - 00:07:50:20\nOh yes, there was nothing like Venice. \n\n00:07:50:20 - 00:07:53:10\nAnd people were\n\n00:07:53:10 - 00:07:56:17\nextraordinary and they were colorful\rand they were outspoken\n\n00:07:56:17 - 00:08:00:16\nand they were opinionated\rand they were extremely diverse.\n\n00:08:00:16 - 00:08:05:17\nI guess some part of non conformist\rin me resonated with that.\n\n00:08:05:17 - 00:08:08:18\nAnd I said, well, this is,\rthis is a pretty good place.\n\n00:08:08:18 - 00:08:13:23\nI was hired by Raul\rMiro to be a manager at the Fox Venice\n\n00:08:13:23 - 00:08:18:11\nin the late seventies, and that was one of\rthe best jobs I've ever had in my life.\n\n00:08:18:11 - 00:08:23:10\nThe Fox Venice was the first\rrepertory cinema in America,\n\n00:08:23:10 - 00:08:26:23\nmeaning it played\ra different double feature every day.\n\n00:08:26:23 - 00:08:32:02\nSo every single day you started\rand you'd have two films\n\n00:08:32:02 - 00:08:38:11\nby Fellini or two films by this or that.\n\n00:08:38:11 - 00:08:41:20\nEvery Saturday, every Sunday\n\n00:08:41:22 - 00:08:44:21\nthere were Spanish language films\n\n00:08:44:21 - 00:08:49:20\nand people from Oakwood,\rHispanics and Spanish speakers\n\n00:08:49:20 - 00:08:55:13\nwould come to the Fox Venice\rafter church in the morning.\n\n00:08:55:13 - 00:08:59:06\nThey'd come and they'd still be in their,\n\n00:08:59:06 - 00:09:03:13\nQuinceanera dresses\rand everything from church,\n\n00:09:03:13 - 00:09:05:18\nand they would watch\n\n00:09:05:18 - 00:09:11:18\nSpanish language double features\rwhich were extraordinarily violent.\n\n00:09:11:18 - 00:09:15:19\nI mean, there was more blood\rthan you can imagine.\n\n00:09:15:19 - 00:09:19:09\nAnd I couldn't understand\rand why nice people would go from directly\n\n00:09:19:09 - 00:09:22:14\nfrom church to take their little children\n\n00:09:22:14 - 00:09:26:05\nto go see four hours of butchery.\n\n00:09:26:05 - 00:09:29:07\nBut that's what they did.\n\n00:09:29:07 - 00:09:31:19\nSo, we had those,\n\n00:09:31:19 - 00:09:33:09\nwe had that audience.\n\n00:09:33:09 - 00:09:37:08\nWe had experimental films\rand people would,\n\n00:09:37:08 - 00:09:40:00\nthat was that\raudience that would come for those.\n\n00:09:40:00 - 00:09:44:18\nWe had  foreign language films\rand people would come for that.\n\n00:09:44:18 - 00:09:48:18\nSo there were many\rdifferent kinds of films\n\n00:09:48:18 - 00:09:51:21\nthat were available\rand different audiences\n\n00:09:51:21 - 00:09:56:09\nfor each of those kinds of films,\reach one had a different kind of a draw.\n\n00:09:56:09 - 00:10:01:04\nPlus, we had live entertainment\rand we had live acts.\n\n00:10:01:04 - 00:10:04:01\nAnd so people\rwould come and bands would come and play.\n\n00:10:04:01 - 00:10:06:14\nSan Francisco mime troupe and\n\n00:10:06:14 - 00:10:10:22\nLes Blanc films played films.\n\n00:10:10:22 - 00:10:12:19\nI don’t know if people know Les Blanc,\n\n00:10:12:19 - 00:10:15:17\nis a documentary filmmaker,\n\n00:10:15:17 - 00:10:20:09\nhas a film called\rGarlic is As Good as Two Mothers\n\n00:10:20:09 - 00:10:25:17\nabout the Gilroy Gaelic Garlic Festival,\rand he has had\n\n00:10:25:17 - 00:10:29:22\na film called Red Beans and Rice,\rand he would cook it upstairs,\n\n00:10:29:22 - 00:10:34:23\nin the, in the upstairs at the Fox.\rThere's a studio, and he would cook it\n\n00:10:34:23 - 00:10:39:21\nand then we'd walk up and down the aisle\rwith a with a fan and would\n\n00:10:39:21 - 00:10:42:22\nwaft red beans and rice\n\n00:10:42:22 - 00:10:45:12\ninto the audience, up and down the aisle.\n\n00:10:45:12 - 00:10:47:00\nLike a smell-a-vision, right?\n\n00:10:47:00 - 00:10:51:02\nAnd then after the movies,\reverybody ate the red beans and rice.\n\n00:10:51:02 - 00:10:54:04\nWe were one of the first\rthat did Rocky Horror.\n\n00:10:54:04 - 00:10:57:16\nRocky Horror before it became that famous.\n\n00:10:57:16 - 00:11:00:00\nAnd we had a midnight show\n\n00:11:00:00 - 00:11:03:06\nand people came from all over\n\n00:11:03:06 - 00:11:08:18\nto perform and yell and be part of it\rand throw things at the screen and\n\n00:11:08:18 - 00:11:13:17\ninteract with that film, which was great,\n\n00:11:13:17 - 00:11:18:02\nexcept I was the manager\rand the staff were called\n\n00:11:18:02 - 00:11:20:03\nCandy People as they still are.\n\n00:11:20:03 - 00:11:23:16\nIf you sell concessions,\ryou're a Candy Person.\n\n00:11:23:16 - 00:11:29:10\nAnd, uh, the Candy People would run down\rand do stuff at the, at the movie.\n\n00:11:29:10 - 00:11:32:20\nThey would interact with the movie,\rwhich meant\n\n00:11:32:20 - 00:11:37:22\nthere was nobody to sell popcorn\rbecause all the people had run down to the stage.\n\n00:11:37:22 - 00:11:41:22\nBut it was a, it was a great experience and\n\n00:11:41:22 - 00:11:45:18\na, a great social experience to, to interact\n\n00:11:45:18 - 00:11:49:17\nwith all these different populations,\rdifferent population groups.\n\n00:11:49:17 - 00:11:53:07\nFox Constituency was very wide.\n\n00:11:53:07 - 00:11:55:11\nIt went out all over.\n\n00:11:55:11 - 00:12:00:08\nIt went to different communities,\rit went to artists,\n\n00:12:00:08 - 00:12:06:12\nit went to museums,\rit went to normal theatergoers, etc..\n\n00:12:06:12 - 00:12:07:23\nFilm buffs.\n\n00:12:07:23 - 00:12:11:08\nAnd, it, it...\n\n00:12:11:08 - 00:12:14:11\nit provided a lot of opportunity\n\n00:12:14:11 - 00:12:17:15\nfor people to learn about film.\n\n00:12:18:03 - 00:12:21:10\nIt was, however...\n\n00:12:21:10 - 00:12:25:13\nyou’d have to call the theater\rto find out what was playing.\n\n00:12:25:15 - 00:12:29:00\nEspecially because\rit changed every single day.\n\n00:12:29:00 - 00:12:32:09\nSo you couldn't just call a number\rand get a recording.\n\n00:12:32:09 - 00:12:37:18\nThe recording had to be made\rfor the next day, every night.\n\n00:12:37:18 - 00:12:42:15\nAnd I was the manager and you'd practice\n\n00:12:42:15 - 00:12:47:18\nand could you not trip up\rwhile you were talking?\n\n00:12:47:18 - 00:12:52:05\nCould you say the title correctly\ror the director correctly?\n\n00:12:52:05 - 00:12:57:09\nAnd, um...then people would hear it.\n\n00:12:57:09 - 00:13:01:04\nSo, so, you had to make a new\rtape recording every night\n\n00:13:01:04 - 00:13:05:05\nand it had to be right on the button\ras far as the number of seconds.\n\n00:13:05:05 - 00:13:08:02\nAnd if you ran too long,\ryou had to do it again.\n\n00:13:08:02 - 00:13:11:02\nSo it fit exactly correctly.\n\n00:13:11:03 - 00:13:14:06\nAnd I didn't. I wasn't even aware of it.\n\n00:13:14:06 - 00:13:19:06\nBut I would go out places and people would\rsay, you're the voice of The Fox.\n\n00:13:19:06 - 00:13:21:19\n\rI got feedback, other places too.\n\n00:13:21:19 - 00:13:27:04\nIf I spoke, people would hear.\rAre you the voice of The Fox, Venice?\n\n00:13:27:04 - 00:13:29:14\nUmmm... So...\r“Was it a small claim to fame?”\n\n00:13:29:14 - 00:13:31:22\nYes, it a small claim to fame.\r(laughs)\n\n00:13:31:22 - 00:13:36:05\nOh, yes, I’m, I still consider myself\ra resident of Venice.\n\n00:13:36:05 - 00:13:38:16\nVenice now, Venice forever.\n\n00:13:38:16 - 00:13:43:19\nThe years that I was\rpart of Venice history...\n\n00:13:44:15 - 00:13:49:06\npeople were really allied\rwith one another.\n\n00:13:49:16 - 00:13:52:16\nThey fought for Venice as a whole.\n\n00:13:52:19 - 00:13:56:13\nThey fought to not have it homogenized,\n\n00:13:56:15 - 00:14:01:16\nnot have it all upscale, etc., etc., etc.\n\n00:14:01:17 - 00:14:04:21\nAnd that was inspirational, to me.\n\n00:14:04:21 - 00:14:08:04\nVenice is kind of a, a test tube,\n\n00:14:08:04 - 00:14:10:22\na breeding ground for\n\n00:14:10:22 - 00:14:13:01\nthe unorthodox.\n\n00:14:13:01 - 00:14:16:21\nAnd we desperately need the unorthodox.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://veniceheritagemuseum.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2416/collection_resources/119597/file/226611#t=0.0,875.24267"}]}]}]}
