00:00:10:21\nAugust 16th, 1950.\n\n00:00:10:21 - 00:00:16:13\nI moved to Venice in June of 1974,\rso it was at 40.\n\n00:00:16:13 - 00:00:18:20\nYou do the math.\n\n00:00:18:20 - 00:00:21:06\nI mean, 26 and 22, 48 years.\n\n00:00:21:06 - 00:00:24:21\nI was working in Santa Monica and I was\n\n00:00:24:21 - 00:00:27:19\nliving in West Hollywood,\rand it was too far of a commute.\n\n00:00:27:19 - 00:00:31:13\nSo, I came down on a Friday night and drove\n\n00:00:31:13 - 00:00:35:06\na long and saw for rent sign.\n\n00:00:35:06 - 00:00:38:02\nAnd stopped in...\n\n00:00:38:02 - 00:00:39:08\nSigned it the next day.\n\n00:00:39:08 - 00:00:41:14\nI woke up Saturday morning.\n\n00:00:41:14 - 00:00:46:02\nThis was a half a block from the beach and\n\n00:00:46:02 - 00:00:48:00\nwent to the beach the next morning.\n\n00:00:48:00 - 00:00:53:07\nThis is on Westminster Avenue\rin 1974 and Westminster Avenue\n\n00:00:53:07 - 00:00:56:05\nthe beach there was the nude beach.\n\n00:00:56:05 - 00:00:58:06\nI never knew that it was the nude beach\n\n00:00:58:06 - 00:00:59:23\nuntil I get out there and go,\n\n00:00:59:23 - 00:01:02:13\nthis is great!\n\n00:01:02:13 - 00:01:07:06\nSo I burnt my buns so bad\rthat first day it was ridiculous.\n\n00:01:07:06 - 00:01:10:21\nBut then other than that,\rI had a great, great summer\n\n00:01:10:21 - 00:01:13:00\nat the nude beach.\n\n00:01:13:00 - 00:01:15:19\nWell, when I first moved to the beach,\rI was right down the block\n\n00:01:15:19 - 00:01:18:00\nfrom the Lafayette Cafe.\n\n00:01:18:00 - 00:01:21:17\nSo that was, that was always\ra great place to, to go and eat.\n\n00:01:21:17 - 00:01:25:00\nAnd there was a whole society\rof people that were just based\n\n00:01:25:00 - 00:01:27:01\non The Lafayette.\n\n00:01:27:01 - 00:01:28:17\nCan you describe some of those people?\n\n00:01:28:17 - 00:01:31:08\nWell, there was Goldie Glitter.\n\n00:01:31:08 - 00:01:35:17\nShe was the Santa Monica College\rhomecoming queen.\n\n00:01:35:17 - 00:01:38:23\nGoldie was a guy.\n\n00:01:38:23 - 00:01:40:12\nAnd I don't know, one,\n\n00:01:40:12 - 00:01:43:16\none day, sitting on a bench\ron the boardwalk\n\n00:01:43:16 - 00:01:44:18\nwith Goldie\n\n00:01:44:18 - 00:01:47:06\nand another guy,\rand we just sat there, all day.\n\n00:01:47:06 - 00:01:48:16\nI just listened to them talk\n\n00:01:48:16 - 00:01:50:03\nand interact with people.\n\n00:01:50:03 - 00:01:52:16\nI was like, one of the\rstrangest and greatest days\n\n00:01:52:16 - 00:01:55:12\nof my life, you know, because\n\n00:01:55:12 - 00:01:58:13\nthat he's, like, the only guy,\rreally, that stands out.\n\n00:01:58:13 - 00:02:01:04\nThen there's Ruby, the waitress,\rand she was famous.\n\n00:02:01:04 - 00:02:04:12\nRuby was like, your\rtypical coffee shop waitress.\n\n00:02:04:12 - 00:02:07:11\nAnd she wore the waitress uniform\n\n00:02:07:11 - 00:02:09:23\nand the whole thing, and she\rwouldn't take crap from anybody.\n\n00:02:09:23 - 00:02:16:12\nAnd that's where, as Goldie,\rhe was this gay, big, tall, swish king\n\n00:02:16:12 - 00:02:17:05\nkind of guy.\n\n00:02:17:05 - 00:02:21:15\nAnd he was very happy being\n\n00:02:21:15 - 00:02:22:18\nwho he was.\n\n00:02:22:18 - 00:02:24:02\nAnd he didn't care what people\n\n00:02:24:02 - 00:02:28:03\nsaid about him or to him\ror whatever, he was just living his life.\n\n00:02:28:03 - 00:02:29:08\nHe was a great guy.\n\n00:02:29:08 - 00:02:31:23\nWhen the Lafayette enlarged and it took\n\n00:02:31:23 - 00:02:34:02\nover the space to just to the north,\n\n00:02:34:02 - 00:02:37:10\nthat was called the Other Room\r or whatever it was called.\n\n00:02:37:10 - 00:02:41:06\nThat's the only place I've ever\rhad a photographic exhibit\n\n00:02:41:06 - 00:02:45:09\nof my photographs I took of Venice,\rand the only place in the world\n\n00:02:45:09 - 00:02:46:13\n(laughs)\n\n00:02:46:13 - 00:02:49:10\nthat has exhibited my photographs.\n\n00:02:49:10 - 00:02:51:03\nAnd it was up for like three months.\n\n00:02:51:03 - 00:02:52:08\nI lived there for three years.\n\n00:02:52:08 - 00:02:54:08\nAnd then I moved\n\n00:02:54:08 - 00:02:56:22\nfrom Westminster\n\n00:02:56:22 - 00:02:59:08\nto the canals,\n\n00:02:59:08 - 00:03:00:17\nand I lived in the canals.\n\n00:03:00:17 - 00:03:03:11\nfor three years,\rand that's where I met my wife.\n\n00:03:03:11 - 00:03:07:06\nAnd the canals was another...\n\n00:03:07:06 - 00:03:10:12\nIt's a world all above in and of itself.\n\n00:03:10:12 - 00:03:12:00\nThere's no city sounds.\n\n00:03:12:00 - 00:03:14:08\nThere's no traffic, there's no nothing.\n\n00:03:14:08 - 00:03:17:14\nIn the canals back then, was like hippies.\n\n00:03:17:14 - 00:03:19:06\nThat's, that's what it was.\n\n00:03:19:06 - 00:03:20:15\nAnd then there was some,\n\n00:03:20:15 - 00:03:22:06\nsome of the big houses\n\n00:03:22:06 - 00:03:24:22\nstarting to come along,\rbut it was mainly\n\n00:03:24:22 - 00:03:26:00\nHippies.\n\n00:03:26:00 - 00:03:29:07\nThis lady that lived across\rthe canal from us, she would stay up\n\n00:03:29:07 - 00:03:31:15\nall night and play these twinkly\n\n00:03:31:15 - 00:03:32:07\nall night and play these twinkly\n\n00:03:32:07 - 00:03:35:06\n(makes musical sounds)\rkind of songs\n\n00:03:35:06 - 00:03:37:18\nand then it was like every night.\n\n00:03:37:18 - 00:03:39:06\nSo there's like, there's a night music.\n\n00:03:39:06 - 00:03:42:04\nYou got to get used to having.\n\n00:03:42:04 - 00:03:45:05\nThe scene on the boardwalk...\n\n00:03:45:05 - 00:03:47:11\nback then...was...\n\n00:03:47:11 - 00:03:51:02\nPeople would come and\rthey'd put blankets down.\n\n00:03:51:02 - 00:03:55:13\nAnd so, like, there's\rstuff from a garage sale.\n\n00:03:55:13 - 00:04:00:15\nAnd then, finally somebody came and\rthey started selling t-shirts or something.\n\n00:04:00:15 - 00:04:01:21\nIt was very low key.\n\n00:04:01:21 - 00:04:04:00\nThere was a lot of, uhmm...\n\n00:04:04:00 - 00:04:07:12\nmusicians that played...\n\n00:04:07:12 - 00:04:11:08\nAnd it...I miss the old,\rwhatever those things were called...\n\n00:04:11:08 - 00:04:13:15\nThe pagodas? \rYeah, right. Pagodas.\n\n00:04:13:15 - 00:04:15:12\nI missed the, the old ones\rbecause they were, they were\n\n00:04:15:12 - 00:04:16:15\nthey were just really cool.\n\n00:04:16:15 - 00:04:20:00\nThe new ones are so sterile\rand it's just, ughhh...\n\n00:04:20:00 - 00:04:23:17\nBut, it was really...\n\n00:04:23:17 - 00:04:28:03\nmore of just a real small town feel.\n\n00:04:28:03 - 00:04:30:10\nThis is before the bike path.\n\n00:04:30:10 - 00:04:33:17\nOr just when the bike path had opened.\n\n00:04:33:17 - 00:04:38:04\nSo not , you weren’t getting millions\rof people down here every weekend.\n\n00:04:38:04 - 00:04:43:02\nYou were just getting locals\rand some tourists.\n\n00:04:43:02 - 00:04:46:06\nAnd then that's when the influx...\n\n00:04:46:06 - 00:04:47:21\nTo me, it's because of the bike path\n\n00:04:47:21 - 00:04:49:21\nthat changed Venice.\n\n00:04:49:21 - 00:04:55:20\nIt's hard to imagine what it\rwas like back then because...\n\n00:04:55:20 - 00:04:58:11\nIt wasn't so built up.\n\n00:04:58:11 - 00:05:02:00\nThere wasn't traffic all the time.\n\n00:05:02:00 - 00:05:05:17\nIt's Iike, I worked for a company that,\n\n00:05:05:17 - 00:05:08:04\nuh...ran bars, and one of them was\n\n00:05:08:04 - 00:05:12:15\nthe Oarhouse which is on\rMain Street in Santa Monica.\n\n00:05:12:15 - 00:05:16:21\nAnd I would come home at 2:00 at night,\rand I'd be walking down the  middle\n\n00:05:16:21 - 00:05:20:03\nof Pacific Avenue with no cars,\rand I'm taking pictures.\n\n00:05:20:03 - 00:05:23:17\nAnd, you know, it was just very isolating.\n\n00:05:23:17 - 00:05:25:16\nI think...\n\n00:05:25:16 - 00:05:28:07\nAnd...\n\n00:05:28:07 - 00:05:31:23\nIt just, there wasn't an\rinflux of as many tourists\n\n00:05:31:23 - 00:05:35:02\nas there is now, you know.\n\n00:05:35:02 - 00:05:36:09\nIt's, it's just incredible.\n\n00:05:36:09 - 00:05:42:02\nHaving lived in Venice for so long,\rI think it's given, given me, uh...\n\n00:05:42:02 - 00:05:45:12\na unique feeling because,\n\n00:05:45:12 - 00:05:47:09\nlike it or not, Venice\n\n00:05:47:09 - 00:05:50:15\nand Venice Beach is world famous.\n\n00:05:50:15 - 00:05:52:16\nAnd if you say to somebody,\rwhere are you from?\n\n00:05:52:16 - 00:05:56:00\nI'm from Venice. They go, whoa!\n\n00:05:56:00 - 00:05:59:17\nTheir idea of what Venice is, is all\n\n00:05:59:17 - 00:06:05:03\nbased on the boardwalk\rand, and maybe roller skating.\n\n00:06:05:03 - 00:06:08:01\nBut that's not my idea of Venice.\n\n00:06:08:01 - 00:06:13:04\nMy idea is of a small town with people\rlive their problems, and they work it out.\n\n00:06:13:04 - 00:06:15:20\nAnd I have good friends. And luckily,\rwe're close enough where we can\n\n00:06:15:20 - 00:06:19:01\nwalk and go to the beach\rand we don't have to\n\n00:06:19:01 - 00:06:22:06\nput up with all the\rtraffic and all that. \n\n00:06:22:06 - 00:06:24:14\nThe, the city-ness...\n\n00:06:24:14 - 00:06:26:19\nVenice is just like a small city.\n\n00:06:26:19 - 00:06:27:15\nI like visuals,\n\n00:06:27:15 - 00:06:29:08\nso anytime I can find a great picture\n\n00:06:29:08 - 00:06:35:05\nof Venice, especially old ones,\rand I've got thousands of old pictures.\n\n00:06:35:05 - 00:06:36:18\nAnd...\n\n00:06:36:18 - 00:06:41:07\nit, it's such a unique city.\n\n00:06:41:07 - 00:06:43:12\nThe way it was founded.\n\n00:06:43:12 - 00:06:45:02\nWhat it was supposed to be.\n\n00:06:45:02 - 00:06:46:17\nHow it took a hard left\n\n00:06:46:17 - 00:06:48:09\nbecause nobody wanted culture.\n\n00:06:48:09 - 00:06:49:17\nThey just wanted to come and\n\n00:06:49:17 - 00:06:53:06\nfrolic at the beach...\n\n00:06:53:06 - 00:06:54:21\nAnd then when\n\n00:06:54:21 - 00:06:57:17\nthe oil hit and all that, then this.\n\n00:06:57:17 - 00:07:01:18\nAnd it's just a great, unique history.\n\n00:07:01:18 - 00:07:03:22\nI really like that it’s not just\n\n00:07:03:22 - 00:07:06:10\nlike another town\rthat somebody plopped down.\n\n00:07:06:10 - 00:07:09:01\nIt’s such a great back story.\n\n00:07:09:01 - 00:07:12:08\nAnd a flip of the coin was\n\n00:07:12:08 - 00:07:16:03\nhow our town was decided,\ryou know, which is unbelievable.\n\n00:07:16:03 - 00:07:18:20\nI don't know, my, my thing\n\n00:07:18:20 - 00:07:21:18\nwas that it allowed a lot, a lot of freedom.\n\n00:07:21:18 - 00:07:25:06\nAnd there was a lot of creativity in the air.\n\n00:07:25:06 - 00:07:30:14\nAnd I was fortunate enough\rto have my own design practice\n\n00:07:30:14 - 00:07:33:04\nfor about 25 years.\n\n00:07:33:04 - 00:07:36:16\nWhere I could do whatever I wanted to do.\n\n00:07:36:16 - 00:07:40:18\nI was my own boss\rand it worked out really well.\n\n00:07:40:18 - 00:07:42:15\nEvery three weeks we have the same thing.\n\n00:07:42:15 - 00:07:45:02\nIf you had to move, where would you go?\n\n00:07:45:02 - 00:07:46:17\nNo, but I wouldn't go anywhere.\n\n00:07:46:17 - 00:07:51:02\nI love it here in Venice,\rand I'm willing to ride out the bumps\n\n00:07:51:02 - 00:07:53:08\nfor, for the, for the glories.\n\n00:07:53:08 - 00:07:55:14\nSo... let's....\n\n00:07:55:14 - 00:07:56:23\nI'm here.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://veniceheritagemuseum.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2416/collection_resources/129353/file/242814#t=0.0,488.896"}]}]}]}
