March 12th, 1960.\n\n00:00:15:06 - 00:00:18:20\nPat Lennon, November 9th, 1951\n\n00:00:18:20 - 00:00:22:22\nMichael Lennon July 17th, 1959.\n\n00:00:22:22 - 00:00:27:17\nAnd you guys are the band? \rVenice, we are the band Venice? Yes.\n\n00:00:27:17 - 00:00:32:21\nNow the band Venice is part of a legacy\rbegins with the Lennon family.\n\n00:00:32:21 - 00:00:37:02\nWill you tell us about the Lennon family\rand their origins in Venice?\n\n00:00:37:02 - 00:00:38:08\nYeah, Kip can do that.\n\n00:00:38:08 - 00:00:40:15\nLet's see, our, our grandfather...\n\n00:00:40:15 - 00:00:42:12\nWe're, we're two sets of brothers.\n\n00:00:42:12 - 00:00:43:11\nPat and I are brothers.\n\n00:00:43:11 - 00:00:47:09\nAnd Michael and Mark, our brothers.\rAnd our dads were brothers.\n\n00:00:47:09 - 00:00:49:12\nSo we’re cousins. We're first cousins.\n\n00:00:49:12 - 00:00:54:05\nOur grandfather was\ra reporter from Chicago.\n\n00:00:54:05 - 00:00:58:12\nHe worked for the Chicago, Chicago Tribune,\rand he met our grandmother,\n\n00:00:58:12 - 00:01:03:22\nwho was a touring ballerina from, Munich,\rGermany, who didn't speak any English.\n\n00:01:03:22 - 00:01:05:22\nAnd he interviewed her dance troupe,\n\n00:01:05:22 - 00:01:09:09\nand then he met her,\rand that was that in Chicago.\n\n00:01:09:09 - 00:01:11:17\nAnd then the San Francisco\rearthquake happened,\n\n00:01:11:17 - 00:01:13:06\nand he went to cover the earthquake.\n\n00:01:13:06 - 00:01:16:07\nAnd her dance troupe was\rstranded in San Francisco\n\n00:01:16:07 - 00:01:19:09\nfrom the San Francisco earthquake.\rAnd he met her again,\n\n00:01:19:09 - 00:01:21:15\nfell in love, and asked her to marry him\n\n00:01:21:15 - 00:01:26:08\nas he said she only, she only could\rsay yes in English, yes in English.\n\n00:01:26:08 - 00:01:27:19\nSo luckily she said yes.\n\n00:01:27:19 - 00:01:29:16\nAnd they moved to Venice.\n\n00:01:29:16 - 00:01:31:07\nThey moved to Venice in 1917.\n\n00:01:31:07 - 00:01:32:16\nSo our family has been here\n\n00:01:32:16 - 00:01:34:01\nfor over 100 years.\n\n00:01:34:01 - 00:01:37:00\nAnd from them they had how many kids?\n\n00:01:37:00 - 00:01:38:05\nNine.\n\n00:01:38:05 - 00:01:39:16\nSeven boys and one girl.\n\n00:01:39:16 - 00:01:41:04\nEight, eight. Eight.\n\n00:01:41:04 - 00:01:45:00\nSo, and they grew up right\rin this local neighborhood.\n\n00:01:45:00 - 00:01:46:19\nYeah. On Victoria Avenue. Yeah.\n\n00:01:46:19 - 00:01:51:00\nAnd, from there,\rtheir, their, Uncle Ted's family\n\n00:01:51:00 - 00:01:52:11\ntheir family has 13 kids.\n\n00:01:52:11 - 00:01:54:05\nOur family has 11 kids.\n\n00:01:54:05 - 00:01:57:18\nOur other cousins have 9 and 7\rand, and, you know,\n\n00:01:57:18 - 00:02:03:06\nthere's a whole, whole bunch of us.\rSixty first cousins grew up in Venice.\n\n00:02:03:06 - 00:02:07:16\nStarting in the 1940’s,\rI guess, late ‘30’s.\n\n00:02:07:16 - 00:02:09:14\nYeah. Right. Yeah.\n\n00:02:09:14 - 00:02:14:21\nLate ‘30s. So, while all these\ryoung cousins were growing up\n\n00:02:14:21 - 00:02:20:15\nour dads and their brothers sang together\rin the original Lennon Brothers group.\n\n00:02:20:15 - 00:02:21:20\nThat was around when?\n\n00:02:21:20 - 00:02:28:22\nLike 1940s and ‘50s, ’40’s and ‘50’s\rand, and like, my dad had been an Irish tenor\n\n00:02:28:22 - 00:02:32:09\nwhen he was a kid, sang\rat the Hollywood Bowl and everything else.\n\n00:02:32:09 - 00:02:35:06\nBut then he started singing with\rhis brothers because they all could sing.\n\n00:02:35:06 - 00:02:41:08\nAnd, and they recorded some albums\r...78’s. Yeah, 78’s, you know. Yeah.\n\n00:02:41:08 - 00:02:45:20\nAnd they, performed locally and\rwere on the radio and that kind of thing.\n\n00:02:45:20 - 00:02:50:17\nAnd so our sisters, who are the \rLennon Sisters our four oldest sisters\n\n00:02:50:17 - 00:02:54:03\ngrew up listening to the harmonies of the,\rthe original Lennon Brothers,\n\n00:02:54:03 - 00:02:55:04\nlike we all did.\n\n00:02:55:04 - 00:02:58:00\nI don't think any of us were\rreally encouraged to be in show business\n\n00:02:58:00 - 00:02:59:16\nas much as we were\rjust encouraged to sing,\n\n00:02:59:16 - 00:03:02:04\nbecause that's just part of our family.\n\n00:03:02:04 - 00:03:03:10\nJust like sports or humor or\n\n00:03:03:10 - 00:03:07:09\nanything else can run through in family,\rharmonies and singing and everything.\n\n00:03:07:09 - 00:03:08:17\nAny of you guys talk about\n\n00:03:08:17 - 00:03:12:13\nstories that you remember\rhearing from your elders, from those\n\n00:03:12:13 - 00:03:16:10\nthose who were here in the early days\rabout their experiences in Venice,\n\n00:03:16:10 - 00:03:20:07\nwhat they remember, what Venice was like \rin the 19 teens or ‘20s or ‘30s?\n\n00:03:20:07 - 00:03:24:05\nYeah, I know that all the uncles loved\rgoing to the beach.\n\n00:03:24:05 - 00:03:27:08\nTheir idea of like, the perfect day\rwould be to go to the beach,\n\n00:03:27:08 - 00:03:29:20\nbody surf and play volleyball.\n\n00:03:29:20 - 00:03:31:00\nAnd it's actually true.\n\n00:03:31:00 - 00:03:34:06\nIt was even in a volleyball magazine\rthat the Lennon Brothers were one of\n\n00:03:34:06 - 00:03:38:12\nthe original beach volleyball,\rpeople that started beach volleyball.\n\n00:03:38:12 - 00:03:41:17\nBut that, all was handed\rdown to us because that's\n\n00:03:41:17 - 00:03:45:00\nwhat we love to do is surf, body surf.\n\n00:03:45:00 - 00:03:47:10\nAnd we just grew up\rplaying volleyball also.\n\n00:03:47:10 - 00:03:50:20\nBut that was when the beaches\rwere so beautiful down here.\n\n00:03:50:20 - 00:03:54:03\n\rYou know. A lot less crowded than now.\n\n00:03:54:03 - 00:03:57:08\nAll of our parents\rgraduated from Venice High.\n\n00:03:57:08 - 00:03:59:05\nOh, no. Did your mom?\n\n00:03:59:05 - 00:04:01:03\nNo. She went to San Mo High.\rShe went to San Mo High.\n\n00:04:01:03 - 00:04:03:23\nBut three of our parents\rgraduated from, from Venice High.\n\n00:04:03:23 - 00:04:07:03\nSo they were around in those days\rAlong with a lot of cousins as well.\n\n00:04:07:03 - 00:04:08:20\nYeah, yeah. So they graduated\n\n00:04:08:20 - 00:04:11:19\nI guess that would be in the ‘30s.\r Thirty five, I think.\n\n00:04:11:19 - 00:04:12:19\nYeah. ‘36.\n\n00:04:12:19 - 00:04:16:13\nThe Lennon Brothers\rwho really began the singing career\n\n00:04:16:13 - 00:04:20:17\nwhere did their, the musical aspect\rbegin for them here in Venice?\n\n00:04:20:17 - 00:04:22:15\nWas the in school? \rWas that in churches?\n\n00:04:22:15 - 00:04:23:22\nWhat was the...?\n\n00:04:23:22 - 00:04:27:23\nI thought it was from your dad\rstarting as a young, you know, performing\n\n00:04:27:23 - 00:04:29:11\nIrish tenor that would sing...\n\n00:04:29:11 - 00:04:31:03\n\rHe was like a boy tenor.\n\n00:04:31:03 - 00:04:32:06\nYeah, our dad.\n\n00:04:32:06 - 00:04:34:01\nAnd, uh...\rBut started in church.\n\n00:04:34:01 - 00:04:36:11\nThat's where they all learned to sing\rand they'd be up in the choir\n\n00:04:36:11 - 00:04:39:03\nand then people heard about\rthe Lennon Brothers having good voices.\n\n00:04:39:03 - 00:04:43:14\nHis dad was a especially wonderful tenor,\rso he was singing, like at breaks\n\n00:04:43:14 - 00:04:44:18\nduring boxing matches.\n\n00:04:44:18 - 00:04:47:04\nAnd he'd be the performer\rduring the break in the boxing matches.\n\n00:04:47:04 - 00:04:51:15\nOur Uncle Jim, which is\rone of the brothers as well,\n\n00:04:51:15 - 00:04:55:19\nbecame, legendary \rHall of Fame boxing announcer,\n\n00:04:55:19 - 00:04:59:15\nwhere you see in Raging Bull\rand Rocky movies, everything.\n\n00:04:59:15 - 00:05:02:00\n“Hello boxing fans”,\rthe guy with the white hair,\n\n00:05:02:00 - 00:05:03:05\nThat's our Uncle Jim.\n\n00:05:03:05 - 00:05:05:06\nSo he was also one of the\rsingers in The Lennon Brothers.\n\n00:05:05:06 - 00:05:08:06\nAll my uncles, I mean, I think that's\rwhere we kind of get our crazy humour.\n\n00:05:08:06 - 00:05:09:16\nThey were all kind of pranksters\n\n00:05:09:16 - 00:05:14:00\nand known as, you know, the goofballs,\rbut yet, you know, talented and funny and\n\n00:05:14:00 - 00:05:17:08\nand so our grandpa Bert,\rmade a, it was during 4th of July\n\n00:05:17:08 - 00:05:20:09\nand, out in the streets of Venice\rand all the neighborhood kids\n\n00:05:20:09 - 00:05:21:03\nknew our family, too.\n\n00:05:21:03 - 00:05:21:15\nSo he made it.\n\n00:05:21:15 - 00:05:25:18\nGot an oatmeal can, a Quaker oatmeal,\rbox, probably a can back then.\n\n00:05:25:18 - 00:05:28:09\nPut a hole in it,\rput a tiny little baby firecracker.\n\n00:05:28:09 - 00:05:30:16\nBut he dressed it up as, like,\rthe world's biggest firecracker.\n\n00:05:30:16 - 00:05:33:10\nHe said, I have the biggest thing this is from,\ryou know, somewhere else in the world,\n\n00:05:33:10 - 00:05:35:19\nyou know, it's it's going to be crazy.\rSo the whole neighborhood\n\n00:05:35:19 - 00:05:38:14\nlike, I think all of Venice\rended up coming out back then.\n\n00:05:38:14 - 00:05:40:20\nAnd he told the kids,\rstand on your tiptoes\n\n00:05:40:20 - 00:05:42:14\nand put your fingers in your ears\rand open your mouth.\n\n00:05:42:14 - 00:05:44:08\nThat way the shock doesn't\rblow out all your teeth.\n\n00:05:44:08 - 00:05:46:19\nSo we got the whole neighborhood,\raunts and uncles and grandpaws\n\n00:05:46:19 - 00:05:47:20\nAnd everyones going like that.\n\n00:05:47:20 - 00:05:51:03\nAnd he lit it and went like,\rpoww, you know, like a little poww.\n\n00:05:51:03 - 00:05:53:12\nOh, they were also mad at him,\rbut they all laughed about it.\n\n00:05:53:12 - 00:05:54:22\nAnd he was, he was a legend after that.\n\n00:05:54:22 - 00:05:56:16\nSo that’s a fun old Venice story.\n\n00:05:56:16 - 00:06:00:00\nHe was a, he was promoter, he was a head of PR\n\n00:06:00:00 - 00:06:02:20\nfor, Ince Studios, which is, which became\n\n00:06:02:20 - 00:06:03:18\nYeah.\n\n00:06:03:18 - 00:06:04:21\nYeah, Thomas Ince Studios.\n\n00:06:04:21 - 00:06:07:17\nWe just got a photo last week that\rsomeone gave us that we didn't know.\n\n00:06:07:17 - 00:06:09:18\nUnbelievable.\rYeah. Exactly.\n\n00:07:24:04 - 00:07:28:05\nSo, Lawrence Welk\rgot the flu or something.\n\n00:07:28:05 - 00:07:28:19\nHe was sick.\n\n00:07:28:19 - 00:07:32:12\nAnd he goes, quick, my dad's home\rsick in bed, so come sing for him.\n\n00:07:32:12 - 00:07:36:07\nAnd they went and they sang for him\rwhile he was laying in bed.\n\n00:07:36:07 - 00:07:39:21\nAnd this was in November of 1955.\n\n00:07:39:21 - 00:07:41:10\nAnd he said, I want you on my show.\n\n00:07:41:10 - 00:07:44:13\nAnd he put them on Christmas Eve, 1955.\n\n00:07:44:13 - 00:07:47:22\nAnd from that moment onward,\rthey were on every\n\n00:07:47:22 - 00:07:50:00\nSaturday night for the next,\rI think, 15 years.\n\n00:07:50:00 - 00:07:51:09\nYeah.\rSomething like that.\n\n00:07:51:09 - 00:07:54:11\nAnd, so that's how\rThe Lennon Sisters thing started.\n\n00:07:54:11 - 00:07:57:06\nThey never really even\rpursued showbusiness.\n\n00:07:57:06 - 00:07:58:23\nNever auditioned for\ranything in their lives.\n\n00:07:58:23 - 00:08:01:10\nThey just...they were just little kids.\n\n00:08:01:10 - 00:08:03:16\nAnd then their whole,\rit just took over their whole lives.\n\n00:08:03:16 - 00:08:05:18\nThey ended up growing up and living in Venice?\n\n00:08:05:18 - 00:08:06:20\nIn Venice. Yeah. Yeah.\n\n00:08:06:20 - 00:08:09:07\nLike right by the intersection,\rlike we all did on the\n\n00:08:09:07 - 00:08:11:13\nthe intersection of\rVenice and Lincoln Boulevard.\n\n00:08:11:13 - 00:08:13:04\nYeah. There's neighborhoods there.\n\n00:08:13:04 - 00:08:16:00\nThat's where they grew up. That's\rwhere we grew up. Yeah. We grew up...\n\n00:08:16:00 - 00:08:16:21\nWe grew up right across\n\n00:08:16:21 - 00:08:20:14\nthe boulevard from each other,\rand we all went to Saint Mark's School\n\n00:08:20:14 - 00:08:22:07\nand Saint Mark's Church.\n\n00:08:22:07 - 00:08:25:20\nThey've always been really proud to,\rwhenever they travel around the country,\n\n00:08:25:20 - 00:08:29:11\nalways tell people they're\rfrom Venice Beach and, you know,\n\n00:08:29:11 - 00:08:31:14\nthey would much rather have been\rhome then been on the road.\n\n00:08:31:14 - 00:08:34:06\nMy claim to fame is\rI used to surf POP Pier.\n\n00:08:34:06 - 00:08:36:02\nYeah. POP.\n\n00:08:36:02 - 00:08:37:10\nYeah, yeah, yeah.\n\n00:08:37:10 - 00:08:41:03\nAnd we used to go there and as kids\rand, and go on all the rides and,\n\n00:08:41:03 - 00:08:44:19\nand also Lawrence Welk used\rto perform at the Aragon Ballroom.\n\n00:08:44:19 - 00:08:46:17\nSo my sisters would be there.\n\n00:08:46:17 - 00:08:50:05\nAnd I don't think these guys got to,\rthey were on the pier.\n\n00:08:50:05 - 00:08:53:23\nI was old enough then.\rI was able to go and\n\n00:08:53:23 - 00:08:56:13\njust wander around all of POP\n\n00:08:56:13 - 00:08:59:12\nand, but later on surfing,\rit was even more important to me\n\n00:08:59:12 - 00:09:03:07\nbecause it became a real, \rkind of famous place to surf.\n\n00:09:03:07 - 00:09:05:23\nAnd only locals could go there.\n\n00:09:05:23 - 00:09:07:06\nYeah. ‘70s. Yeah.\n\n00:09:07:06 - 00:09:10:17\nI would say...after the, after the pier,\rafter the park closed down\n\n00:09:10:17 - 00:09:12:00\nthe pier was there for a long time.\n\n00:09:12:00 - 00:09:12:12\nDerelict.\n\n00:09:12:12 - 00:09:15:23\nIt was kind of dangerous to go,\rbut the locals knew how to climb down\n\n00:09:15:23 - 00:09:17:15\nthrough the rafters and jump\rin the water and everything.\n\n00:09:17:15 - 00:09:20:12\nSo it was like a badge of honor\rto, to surf at POP.\n\n00:09:20:12 - 00:09:20:21\nYeah.\n\n00:09:20:21 - 00:09:23:07\nNow do you have a favorite ride,\rdo you remember?\n\n00:09:23:07 - 00:09:26:07\nYeah, there was the banana terrain\ror something like that.\n\n00:09:26:07 - 00:09:31:00\nWent up, went up through the mountain\rand you went right over the ocean.\n\n00:09:31:00 - 00:09:32:18\nAnd they had it kind of looking like it\n\n00:09:32:18 - 00:09:35:12\nIt was real... Raggedy,\rderelict and raggedy. Yeah.\n\n00:09:35:12 - 00:09:36:18\nAnd you go right over the ocean.\n\n00:09:36:18 - 00:09:37:10\nOh my gosh.\n\n00:09:37:10 - 00:09:42:11\nThey also had one, a big bath escape\rI think it's called, bathesphere.\n\n00:09:42:11 - 00:09:43:17\nBathesphere.\n\n00:09:43:17 - 00:09:46:02\nAnd you get in it\rand it would go down into the ocean\n\n00:09:46:02 - 00:09:49:20\nand then come back up. And it's like... \rCrazy. It was like a... Kind of like a plunge.\n\n00:09:49:20 - 00:09:52:19\nYeah. But you, you're going into the\rdepths of the ocean kind of thing.\n\n00:09:52:19 - 00:09:53:14\nIt was cool.\n\n00:09:53:14 - 00:09:54:20\nAnd their brother in law,\n\n00:09:54:20 - 00:09:59:10\nWayne, worked there as a teenager,\rand he still remembers his speech.\n\n00:09:59:10 - 00:10:00:06\nOh, really?\n\n00:10:00:06 - 00:10:00:19\nHe used to give the speech.\n\n00:10:00:19 - 00:10:03:04\n“You're now going 40ft down.”\n\n00:10:03:04 - 00:10:05:01\nHe still knows the whole speech.\n\n00:10:05:01 - 00:10:07:04\nSo we grew up with a legacy of...\n\n00:10:07:04 - 00:10:09:02\nYeah. We were really like the...\n\n00:10:09:02 - 00:10:11:16\nIt's almost like two generations\rbecause our families were so big.\n\n00:10:11:16 - 00:10:14:07\nSo by the time we were going through\rSaint Mark's School,\n\n00:10:14:07 - 00:10:17:15\nand by the time we started singing\ror doing anything\n\n00:10:17:15 - 00:10:21:17\nlike our, our family, we were so fortunate\renough to have all these,\n\n00:10:21:17 - 00:10:24:04\nthis whole community\rthat sort of knew our family already.\n\n00:10:24:04 - 00:10:25:17\nSo I wouldn't say it \n\n00:10:25:17 - 00:10:26:15\nIt gave us a leg up,\n\n00:10:26:15 - 00:10:30:22\nbut it gave us a lot of security\ras far as just feeling comfortable\n\n00:10:30:22 - 00:10:33:23\nand happy in this huge community of people.\n\n00:10:33:23 - 00:10:37:03\nAnd still, you know,\rjust fast forward to the present\n\n00:10:37:03 - 00:10:41:14\nnow that we we've grown and have kids\rof our own, it's amazing to me,\n\n00:10:41:14 - 00:10:45:16\ncoaches and other parents\rhave kids on our kids little league teams,\n\n00:10:45:16 - 00:10:48:07\nor whatever, that we all grew up\n\n00:10:48:07 - 00:10:51:11\nin the same neighborhoods and we all,\rand they say, oh, we remember your house.\n\n00:10:51:11 - 00:10:53:06\nYou used to do Halloween show your house.\n\n00:10:53:06 - 00:10:55:08\nWe used to come see\ryour dad do this\n\n00:10:55:08 - 00:10:57:04\nand we'd see,\ryou know, your family singing.\n\n00:10:57:04 - 00:11:01:05\nSo, that is just invaluable to us.\rThat, that is wealth.\n\n00:11:01:05 - 00:11:02:03\nThat's true wealth.\n\n00:11:02:03 - 00:11:05:11\nIs to have that sort of legacy in that\rand to be proud of it.\n\n00:11:05:11 - 00:11:07:16\nTo know that we've been\rpart of the community for so long.\n\n00:11:07:16 - 00:11:11:13\nAnd, and Venice was such a melting pot, too.\rWhen I was growing up anyway.\n\n00:11:11:13 - 00:11:13:09\nIn the 50s,\rwhen I was in Little League\n\n00:11:13:09 - 00:11:16:21\nand Pop Warner football,\rit was all Black, all Mexican, White.\n\n00:11:16:21 - 00:11:19:06\nIt was all equally,\n\n00:11:19:06 - 00:11:21:07\nyou know, everybody just\rgrew up together, knowing each other.\n\n00:11:21:07 - 00:11:23:20\nAnd they’d, everybody would come\rto our house and swim in our pool.\n\n00:11:23:20 - 00:11:25:11\nIt was just the coolest thing.\rYeah.\n\n00:11:25:11 - 00:11:26:20\nI didn't even...\n\n00:11:26:20 - 00:11:29:11\nFor me I didn't really think\rabout race almost at all.\n\n00:11:29:11 - 00:11:33:07\nAs it got older,\rit got a little bit different.\n\n00:11:33:07 - 00:11:35:06\nWas the different than Los Angeles when\n\n00:11:35:06 - 00:11:38:18\nyou would leave the Venice area?\rVenice was, I think was more of a melting pot\n\n00:11:38:18 - 00:11:42:06\nthen, you know, other areas.\n\n00:11:42:06 - 00:11:44:07\nIt, it was it was really wonderful though.\n\n00:11:44:07 - 00:11:48:02\nI, I think one of the things\rpeople don't realize about Venice is,\n\n00:11:48:02 - 00:11:52:01\nlike Pat was saying earlier,\rthe eclectic, melting cultural\n\n00:11:52:01 - 00:11:56:12\nmelting pot that happens here,\rand, and especially when we are all growing up.\n\n00:11:56:12 - 00:11:57:19\nI mean, you know,\n\n00:11:57:19 - 00:12:02:01\nthat there is just all different\rethnicities and races and everything.\n\n00:12:02:01 - 00:12:06:00\nAnd like Pat said, it wasn't, we weren’t,\rI don't remember thinking it was a\n\n00:12:06:00 - 00:12:09:08\ndeal back then, like it was just like,\roh, those are my friends from football.\n\n00:12:09:08 - 00:12:11:03\nThat's my friends from baseball.\n\n00:12:11:03 - 00:12:13:03\nYou know, we didn't\rthink of it as race and all that.\n\n00:12:13:03 - 00:12:16:09\nAnd I think, I don't think people\n\n00:12:16:09 - 00:12:19:12\nrealize that Venice is such a melting pot.\n\n00:12:19:12 - 00:12:22:11\nI think they think it's a bunch,\ryou know, more people like us, like, yeah,\n\n00:12:22:11 - 00:12:24:14\nwhite blond surfers and stuff like that.\n\n00:12:24:14 - 00:12:26:21\nBut I think they don't realize, like,\n\n00:12:26:21 - 00:12:29:02\nthat's one of the great things\rabout Venice,\n\n00:12:29:02 - 00:12:31:18\nI think, is, you know,\rit's heritage in that.
