00:00:12:04\nin 1967, November of ‘67.\n\n00:00:13:06 - 00:00:15:19\nBorn in, what is the unofficial\n\n00:00:15:19 - 00:00:19:09\nI was born in Venice Hospital,\rwhich is Saint Monica's in Santa Monica.\n\n00:00:19:09 - 00:00:23:07\nAs Venice didn't have a hospital\rwhen we were kids.\n\n00:00:23:07 - 00:00:25:04\nAnd my mom brought me home\n\n00:00:25:04 - 00:00:28:13\nfrom the hospital to, uh...\n\n00:00:28:13 - 00:00:30:05\nuh...what street is that?\n\n00:00:30:05 - 00:00:33:14\nI want to say it's\rWestminster and Speedway.\n\n00:00:33:14 - 00:00:35:04\nAnd I lived there with my mommy and\n\n00:00:35:04 - 00:00:36:12\njust alone with her for a little while\n\n00:00:36:12 - 00:00:40:04\nand some other young woman in\rour building was unfortunately murdered.\n\n00:00:40:04 - 00:00:43:13\nAnd my mom moved out of the building\rimmediately, and I moved in\n\n00:00:43:13 - 00:00:46:19\nwith my grandfather over\rin the hood, kind of.\n\n00:00:46:19 - 00:00:50:00\nAnd, and my mom moved to UCLA\rand went to school.\n\n00:00:50:00 - 00:00:53:10\nInitially we lived in \rthe back of the family shop.\n\n00:00:53:10 - 00:00:56:07\nSo there was a place called \rBill and Totsies and it was a,\n\n00:00:56:07 - 00:00:59:07\nthey call themselves an \rantiques and curios, but it was a junk shop.\n\n00:00:59:07 - 00:01:00:21\nAnd there were a few of those on\n\n00:01:00:21 - 00:01:02:08\nAbbot Kinney at the time when it was\n\n00:01:02:08 - 00:01:04:02\nstill West Washington Boulevard.\n\n00:01:04:02 - 00:01:05:06\nAnd my grandfather and I\n\n00:01:05:06 - 00:01:06:15\nlived in a little loft\n\n00:01:06:15 - 00:01:09:14\nin the back of that shop on\rthe 1200 block of what is now\n\n00:01:09:14 - 00:01:11:00\nAbbot Kinney Boulevard.\n\n00:01:11:00 - 00:01:12:10\nI was very, very little.\n\n00:01:12:10 - 00:01:15:17\nWhat I remember of it reminds me\rquite a bit of what Melrose used to be\n\n00:01:15:17 - 00:01:17:11\nbe before retail hit there.\rSo there were a\n\n00:01:17:11 - 00:01:21:09\nfew smatterings of smaller\rmom and pop retail shops that sold\n\n00:01:21:09 - 00:01:26:00\nlittle things, clothing or, uh,\ryou know, sometimes secondhand clothing.\n\n00:01:26:00 - 00:01:26:07\nAnd there was.\n\n00:01:26:07 - 00:01:29:05\nA couple of junk shops\rand it was not fancy at all.\n\n00:01:29:05 - 00:01:32:16\nIt was, it was at the time\rhad been an abandoned retail area.\n\n00:01:32:16 - 00:01:34:15\nThey were, people were trying to keep alive.\n\n00:01:34:15 - 00:01:36:07\nAnd between that and what was called\n\n00:01:36:07 - 00:01:38:01\nthe old mall in Santa Monica\n\n00:01:38:01 - 00:01:41:06\nwas where you could go and buy things\rif you were just a regular person.\n\n00:01:41:06 - 00:01:43:23\nOn, on, West Washington Boulevard\n\n00:01:43:23 - 00:01:47:07\nI believe it was primarily,\rpeople lived there still.\n\n00:01:47:07 - 00:01:49:12\nThere were a few smaller,\rcheap restaurants,\n\n00:01:49:12 - 00:01:53:07\nand there were a couple of old folks\rhomes, and that was that.\n\n00:01:53:07 - 00:01:56:10\nUhmmm... A little later on, there's a\n\n00:01:56:10 - 00:02:00:12\nhand-built American super car \rcalled The Vector.\n\n00:02:00:18 - 00:02:02:17\nI'd have to, you could look it up.\n\n00:02:02:17 - 00:02:05:16\nAnd they built those in a\n\n00:02:05:16 - 00:02:08:23\nlittle warehousing on, \ron West Washington.\n\n00:02:08:23 - 00:02:12:15\nAnd right by where L’Ecole school is \rright now, across the street from it.\n\n00:02:12:15 - 00:02:13:18\nSo I would go down there.\n\n00:02:13:18 - 00:02:16:17\nI wasn't allowed to walk too far\rfrom the place because I was very little.\n\n00:02:16:17 - 00:02:18:23\nI was allowed to go down there to sit\rand watch them build the cars,\n\n00:02:18:23 - 00:02:20:08\nand they would show me\rall the speakers they were\n\n00:02:20:08 - 00:02:23:05\nputting in and everything.\rAnd that was quiet and cool.\n\n00:02:23:05 - 00:02:25:10\nAnother block further down\n\n00:02:25:10 - 00:02:29:09\nwas a little, a little house\rthat had been converted into a jazz club.\n\n00:02:29:09 - 00:02:31:03\nAnd called The Azz Izz\n\n00:02:31:03 - 00:02:34:01\nAnd because the gentleman\rthat opened that Jazz club\n\n00:02:34:01 - 00:02:37:06\nand that was on West Washington\rBoulevard, two blocks down from us.\n\n00:02:37:06 - 00:02:41:20\nBecause that guy was, A. friend of\rmy grandfather's, who was Hippie Charles.\n\n00:02:41:20 - 00:02:45:05\nThe guy's name was, uhmm...Billy Harris,\rbecause he was a friend\n\n00:02:45:05 - 00:02:48:10\nof my grandfather's\rand because he was an elder black cat.\n\n00:02:48:10 - 00:02:49:16\nSo my grandfather trusted him.\n\n00:02:49:16 - 00:02:51:19\nAnd because he lived in that house\n\n00:02:51:19 - 00:02:54:03\nthat was a club, with his kids,\n\n00:02:54:03 - 00:02:56:14\nI spent a lot of time\rdown the street with them\n\n00:02:56:14 - 00:02:57:16\nwhen I was little.\n\n00:02:57:16 - 00:02:59:11\nI didn't know them very well.\n\n00:02:59:11 - 00:03:01:21\nAfter I’d, you know, once \rwe moved away from there.\n\n00:03:01:21 - 00:03:04:00\nBut that was another thing\rthat was unique to, to living\n\n00:03:04:00 - 00:03:07:23\nright there as, as well as a bunch\rof the kids that I grew up with\n\n00:03:07:23 - 00:03:10:20\nin the Oakwood area,\rwhen I moved over there on\n\n00:03:10:20 - 00:03:14:06\n5th and Broadway,\rthey were all into sports.\n\n00:03:14:06 - 00:03:15:07\nThey were all, I mean, you know,\n\n00:03:15:07 - 00:03:18:21\nit's a black and brown neighborhood,\rso everybody's into football and baseball.\n\n00:03:18:21 - 00:03:20:10\nAnd I was not into any\n\n00:03:20:10 - 00:03:23:04\nI was into reading and listening to music.\n\n00:03:23:04 - 00:03:24:17\nAnd I was an only child.\n\n00:03:24:17 - 00:03:28:04\nSo I spent all of my time,\rmy playground or my Oakwood Park\n\n00:03:28:04 - 00:03:33:09\nwas the train tracks that used to run\ralong Electric Avenue between\n\n00:03:33:09 - 00:03:38:08\nWest Washington Boulevard and Electric where\rall of the parking lots are now, behind\n\n00:03:38:08 - 00:03:41:03\nIntelligentsia and all of those things.\n\n00:03:41:03 - 00:03:44:16\nAll of those lofts that are back there,\rthat was all train track of the\n\n00:03:44:16 - 00:03:46:22\nold Red Line that used to run down there,\rand that was my playground.\n\n00:03:46:22 - 00:03:48:06\nI go out there and throw rocks\n\n00:03:48:06 - 00:03:51:22\nor build stuff out of dirt,\rwhatever I was going to do.\n\n00:03:51:22 - 00:03:55:18\nAnd, I think those are like kind of unique\rwith growing up on, on West Washington\n\n00:03:55:18 - 00:03:56:16\nbecause not many,\n\n00:03:56:16 - 00:04:00:05\nI don't think any other kids lived there\rexcept me and Billy Harris's kids.\n\n00:04:00:05 - 00:04:01:23\nWhen we moved out of the shop\n\n00:04:01:23 - 00:04:04:09\nfrom West Washington Boulevard\n\n00:04:04:09 - 00:04:06:03\nwe moved into one of the\n\n00:04:06:03 - 00:04:09:18\nlow income apartment buildings\rover into Oakwood District.\n\n00:04:09:18 - 00:04:13:02\nUhmm... there were, I think 12\ror 14 of them scattered throughout.\n\n00:04:13:02 - 00:04:18:02\nWe lived in one that was on the corner\rof Fifth Avenue and Broadway,\n\n00:04:18:02 - 00:04:21:17\nwhich, not quite at that time yet,\rbut over the years became\n\n00:04:21:17 - 00:04:23:20\none of the more notorious,\n\n00:04:24:08 - 00:04:28:02\ncross sections in, in Venice\rwhere, like,you just couldn't go.\n\n00:04:28:02 - 00:04:31:19\nLike I would have my friends from\rover here, this side because I was,\n\n00:04:31:19 - 00:04:33:00\ninterested in different things.\n\n00:04:33:00 - 00:04:36:19\nSo I'd get up, I would watch Soul Train\rwith everybody else in my house\n\n00:04:36:19 - 00:04:38:13\nand then instead of going \rout into the neighborhood\n\n00:04:38:13 - 00:04:40:12\n\rand trying to sneak beers or whatever\n\n00:04:40:12 - 00:04:43:23\nwith the rest of my friends, I would come\rover to the beach where I met a bunch of\n\n00:04:43:23 - 00:04:44:19\npeople that ended up\n\n00:04:44:19 - 00:04:49:09\nbeing some of my closest friends\rand just kind of getting a range of...\n\n00:04:49:09 - 00:04:51:07\nmore of the cultures that were\n\n00:04:51:07 - 00:04:53:02\nin this small community.\n\n00:04:53:02 - 00:04:55:01\nA lot of people that I \rgrew up with over in Ghost Town\n\n00:04:55:01 - 00:04:57:20\nalmost, they only knew,\rthey only saw the white kids\n\n00:04:57:20 - 00:05:00:22\nat school or at the park for sports.\n\n00:05:00:22 - 00:05:04:05\nThey didn't come on the \rweekends to United Skates\n\n00:05:04:05 - 00:05:06:18\nover on, on uh...\n\n00:05:06:18 - 00:05:08:20\nWindward to play video games\rall day with them.\n\n00:05:08:20 - 00:05:13:03\nThey didn't go to people's houses\rand hang out with their dad and their dog\n\n00:05:13:03 - 00:05:14:04\nright on Market Street.\n\n00:05:14:04 - 00:05:15:18\nThey stayed in that area.\n\n00:05:15:18 - 00:05:16:14\nSo when you interview\n\n00:05:16:14 - 00:05:20:10\nsome of the people from Ghost Town,\rthey won't be able to tell you a lot\n\n00:05:20:10 - 00:05:25:01\nabout what else was going on outside\rof Venice except at school.\n\n00:05:26:17 - 00:05:30:07\nAnd I was different\rin that I was just so into everything.\n\n00:05:30:07 - 00:05:33:03\nLike when all of these guys over here\ron the other side of Electric\n\n00:05:33:03 - 00:05:35:19\nor on the other side \rof Main started getting into punk,\n\n00:05:35:19 - 00:05:39:05\nthere weren't a gang of black kids\rover there that were into punk music,\n\n00:05:39:05 - 00:05:42:19\nbut everybody on this side,\rthat was kind of a thing.\n\n00:05:42:19 - 00:05:45:21\nAnd I just dove into it. I think that me,\n\n00:05:45:21 - 00:05:49:14\nand my cousin Marky, the couple of others,\rare some of the very few\n\n00:05:49:14 - 00:05:53:04\nfrom that side that really traversed\rboth sides all the, all the time.\n\n00:05:53:04 - 00:05:56:17\nNo matter how different\rwe all ended up or even were as kids,\n\n00:05:56:17 - 00:05:58:09\nthere are certain things and\n\n00:05:58:09 - 00:06:00:19\nrules and code that are\n\n00:06:00:19 - 00:06:04:06\nunique to Venice and our in our DNA.\n\n00:06:04:06 - 00:06:07:11\nJust the way that those of us\rthat were true to our neighborhood\n\n00:06:07:11 - 00:06:10:02\nand to our friends\rand our family of Venice were.\n\n00:06:10:02 - 00:06:13:03\nAnd it crossed the color lines\rlike we could be somewhere where\n\n00:06:13:03 - 00:06:14:11\nthere might be somebody\rfrom the neighborhood\n\n00:06:14:11 - 00:06:16:22\nyou didn't even know, but you knew\rthey were from the neighborhood.\n\n00:06:16:22 - 00:06:18:17\nAnd if something popped off\n\n00:06:18:17 - 00:06:23:12\nit was Venice versus everybody.\rAnd some of us, although we're not that\n\n00:06:23:12 - 00:06:27:21\nkind of person anymore,\rthat feeling still is still there.\n\n00:06:27:21 - 00:06:30:09\nI believe that at some point\rsomeone, somewhere\n\n00:06:30:09 - 00:06:32:18\nlooked around and realized\rthat there were a bunch of people\n\n00:06:32:18 - 00:06:34:13\nthat didn't have money.\n\n00:06:34:13 - 00:06:37:10\nAnd notably a bunch of\rblack and brown people that didn't\n\n00:06:37:10 - 00:06:40:16\nhave money, that owned property\rwithin a mile of the beach.\n\n00:06:40:16 - 00:06:43:01\nAnd someone figured that just can't go on.\n\n00:06:43:01 - 00:06:43:22\nThat doesn't make any sense.\n\n00:06:43:22 - 00:06:46:08\nWe can't have that. \rThis money, this is worth...\n\n00:06:46:08 - 00:06:47:14\nWhat are they doing here?\n\n00:06:47:14 - 00:06:49:16\nI mean, we all know historically\rwhat they were doing here.\n\n00:06:49:16 - 00:06:54:01\nWe were all brought here, without regards\rreally to our color or anything\n\n00:06:54:01 - 00:06:58:02\nand allowed to buy property as we dug out\rthe swamps to build the community.\n\n00:06:58:02 - 00:07:00:16\nSince that was only, you know,\n\n00:07:00:16 - 00:07:05:07\nthe 1900’s, is we want to call it,\rcertainly not much more than like\n\n00:07:05:07 - 00:07:08:05\n40, 50 years after slavery,\rwhen you think about it.\n\n00:07:08:05 - 00:07:11:05\nSo when Abbot Kinney bought this\n\n00:07:11:09 - 00:07:14:00\nentire area of swamp with his\n\n00:07:14:00 - 00:07:16:12\nbusiness group and realized that\n\n00:07:16:12 - 00:07:20:22\nhis dream of just building\rstilts and making Venice, Italy here,\n\n00:07:20:22 - 00:07:21:21\nwasn't real.\n\n00:07:21:21 - 00:07:24:17\nYou can't build things on a swamp.\rAnd I don't care what it is.\n\n00:07:24:17 - 00:07:26:00\nYou can't make moats.\n\n00:07:26:00 - 00:07:27:19\nYou have to dig that swamp out.\n\n00:07:27:19 - 00:07:29:07\nDredge the entire swamp.\n\n00:07:29:07 - 00:07:32:16\nIt has to be filled with sand or whatever\ryou got, which we have plenty of sand.\n\n00:07:32:16 - 00:07:35:01\nAnd there weren't a lot of\rmachines or companies that\n\n00:07:35:01 - 00:07:35:23\ndid that at the time.\n\n00:07:35:23 - 00:07:38:19\nThere were just people that did it,\rand there were certain\n\n00:07:38:19 - 00:07:42:02\ngroups or classes of people\rthat were more suitable\n\n00:07:42:02 - 00:07:44:06\nfor hiring for that \rkind of work, at the time.\n\n00:07:44:06 - 00:07:49:05\nSo there were a lot of black and brown\rfolks brought here to do the hard, hard\n\n00:07:49:05 - 00:07:49:22\nwork of\n\n00:07:49:22 - 00:07:52:08\nbuild, physically build Venice.\r\n\n00:07:52:08 - 00:07:53:10\nAs an analogy\n\n00:07:53:10 - 00:07:56:06\nfor the black folks\rthat built this country that have\n\n00:07:56:06 - 00:07:58:11\nyet to see anything out of it.\n\n00:07:58:11 - 00:08:02:08\nAnd Abbot Kinney,\rin what I would believe is probably\n\n00:08:02:08 - 00:08:06:01\n40% altruism and 60% good, solid\n\n00:08:06:01 - 00:08:08:09\nbusiness sense, was like,\rlet me sell these folks\n\n00:08:08:09 - 00:08:11:09\nsome property close\rto where I need them to work.\n\n00:08:11:09 - 00:08:12:13\nThey won't be big lots.\n\n00:08:12:13 - 00:08:14:09\nBut they can't buy anything anywhere else,\n\n00:08:14:09 - 00:08:16:02\n\respecially not by the water.\n\n00:08:16:02 - 00:08:17:04\nAnd they'll work for me.\n\n00:08:17:04 - 00:08:19:09\nAnd help me run this thing.\n\n00:08:19:09 - 00:08:20:08\nAnd it'll be cool.\n\n00:08:20:08 - 00:08:22:20\nI don't mind them that much. They're just.\rWhat are they going to do to me?\n\n00:08:22:20 - 00:08:27:07\nAnd I believe that because of that,\rblack folks have been here in this area.\n\n00:08:27:07 - 00:08:28:07\nIt's unique.\n\n00:08:28:07 - 00:08:31:00\nIt may be the only\rcoastal community of color.\n\n00:08:31:00 - 00:08:32:00\nCertainly on this coast.\n\n00:08:32:00 - 00:08:35:16\nIt's the oldest \rcolored community, by the coast.\n\n00:08:35:16 - 00:08:36:07\nPeriod.\n\n00:08:36:07 - 00:08:37:11\nI mean, you know, you're \rgoing to get a lot\n\n00:08:37:11 - 00:08:39:21\nof people talking about, about the change.\n\n00:08:39:21 - 00:08:41:22\nAnd, and, uou know, what is what is called\n\n00:08:41:22 - 00:08:43:19\ngentrification, you know.\n\n00:08:43:19 - 00:08:48:07\nWhat I have always kind of like,\rmixed those two words of like,\n\n00:08:48:07 - 00:08:52:05\nGentrification, like \rgenocide meets invasion,\n\n00:08:52:05 - 00:08:55:13\nis kind of where,\rwhere I like, mix those together.\n\n00:08:55:13 - 00:08:58:21\nAnd I believe that the change\rthat we see that, that's made a lot\n\n00:08:58:21 - 00:09:00:21\nof us unhappy doesn't have as much to do\n\n00:09:00:21 - 00:09:04:20\nwith, uh, the cleaning up of Venice,\rquote, unquote, cleaning up.\n\n00:09:04:20 - 00:09:07:19\nIt's that when people say,\rwe cleaned up Venice, aren't you happy?\n\n00:09:07:19 - 00:09:11:01\nWhat they mean is they cleaned away\reverything that we knew of it, including\n\n00:09:11:01 - 00:09:12:14\nmost of our people that we grew up with.\n\n00:09:12:14 - 00:09:14:11\nThat to them, cleaning Venice\n\n00:09:14:11 - 00:09:18:12\nup to make it more palatable\ror suitable for a new generation of people\n\n00:09:18:12 - 00:09:23:00\nthat can better afford to be here\ror have more, whatever,\n\n00:09:23:00 - 00:09:24:01\nright.\n\n00:09:24:01 - 00:09:28:03\nclassist,\rright to this kind of environment,\n\n00:09:28:03 - 00:09:30:19\nhas been problematic in that people,\n\n00:09:30:19 - 00:09:34:02\nnew people, have always come here because\rit's a unique and really cool place.\n\n00:09:34:02 - 00:09:36:11\nWe had beat,\n\n00:09:36:11 - 00:09:37:12\nyou know, beat poets.\n\n00:09:37:12 - 00:09:38:19\nWe had hippies playing \n\n00:09:38:19 - 00:09:40:18\ndrums on the beach for a living.\n\n00:09:40:18 - 00:09:41:21\nWe had jazz clubs.\n\n00:09:41:21 - 00:09:45:23\nWe had, you know, this place has always\rbeen kind of a cultural hub\n\n00:09:45:23 - 00:09:51:13\nof eclectic outsider art.\rFrom fine art to whatever.\n\n00:09:51:13 - 00:09:54:04\nWhat I think was, is part of the change\n\n00:09:54:04 - 00:09:55:19\nthat, and it kind of fits in with\n\n00:09:55:19 - 00:09:59:13\nthe last idea of what people \rshould know about Venice if they don't.\n\n00:09:59:13 - 00:10:01:10\nA lot of people may not realize\n\n00:10:01:10 - 00:10:03:16\n\rlike,when you when people come\n\n00:10:03:16 - 00:10:08:09\nfrom above as if we are the peasants\rand they are bestowing upon us culture\n\n00:10:08:09 - 00:10:12:19\nand art and ideas and ideals,\rthat's not the case at all.\n\n00:10:12:19 - 00:10:16:11\nIt was already here, the same coolness\n\n00:10:16:11 - 00:10:19:04\nthat brought all of these\rnew folks to Venice\n\n00:10:19:04 - 00:10:20:09\nused to work.\n\n00:10:20:09 - 00:10:21:17\nDennis Hopper moved here.\n\n00:10:21:17 - 00:10:22:19\nHe loved it.\n\n00:10:22:19 - 00:10:24:20\nHe was like, bro, who sells weed?\n\n00:10:24:20 - 00:10:26:15\nCome hang out of my house.
