00:00:11:03\nBorn March 2nd, 1970.\n\n00:00:11:03 - 00:00:14:17\nAnd can you tell me how long you've lived\rin the Venice community?\n\n00:00:14:17 - 00:00:19:00\nLived in Venice for 47 years.\n\n00:00:19:00 - 00:00:22:22\nI’m the grandson of one of the early\n\n00:00:22:22 - 00:00:26:19\nBlack families that moved\rto Venice in the early 1900s.\n\n00:00:26:19 - 00:00:29:01\nAnd his name is,\n\n00:00:29:01 - 00:00:32:23\nClarence Tabor, brother to Irving Tabor\n\n00:00:32:23 - 00:00:34:01\nmy mother's side.\n\n00:00:34:01 - 00:00:36:15\nOn my father's side, uh...\n\n00:00:36:15 - 00:00:38:06\nwas the Huff family.\n\n00:00:38:06 - 00:00:41:09\nHemp Huff\n\n00:00:41:09 - 00:00:42:16\nwas my grandfather.\n\n00:00:42:16 - 00:00:45:12\nMy father was Robert Huff, senior.\n\n00:00:45:12 - 00:00:49:15\nMy first, earliest memories,\n\n00:00:49:15 - 00:00:51:12\nVenice was a little\n\n00:00:51:12 - 00:00:56:03\nat least the area I grew up\rin was Oakwood area.\n\n00:00:56:03 - 00:00:58:13\nIt was somewhat\n\n00:00:58:13 - 00:01:01:19\nramshackled, a lot of craftsman homes.\n\n00:01:01:19 - 00:01:04:19\nAnd for me, in the ‘70s,\n\n00:01:04:20 - 00:01:07:05\nit was a little bit hippie’ish,\n\n00:01:07:05 - 00:01:12:20\ncolorful, and very diverse,\rfrom what I remember.\n\n00:01:12:20 - 00:01:14:21\nIt can be a little bit rowdy\n\n00:01:14:21 - 00:01:20:09\ncomparatively to the areas around it,\rbut from what I remember is,\n\n00:01:20:09 - 00:01:23:05\nit’s a good family\rupbringing in a place like,\n\n00:01:23:05 - 00:01:25:16\nyou know, at least with\rthe area that I grew up.\n\n00:01:25:16 - 00:01:30:14\nSo tell me some of the activities\rthat you remember at Oakwood Park.\n\n00:01:30:14 - 00:01:36:05\nOakland Park for me, early, was,\n\n00:01:36:05 - 00:01:37:09\nit was good and bad.\n\n00:01:37:09 - 00:01:40:17\nIt was a lot of ruckus,\ra lot of rambunctiousness.\n\n00:01:40:17 - 00:01:45:02\nI played all the sports there.\n\n00:01:45:02 - 00:01:47:00\nA lot of friends in the neighborhood.\n\n00:01:47:00 - 00:01:49:23\nA lot of kids grew up in my teens.\rHung out at the park.\n\n00:01:49:23 - 00:01:52:23\nIt was, a meeting place,\ra community place.\n\n00:01:52:23 - 00:01:56:08\nAt one point, it was, you know,\rit could be said that it was,\n\n00:01:56:08 - 00:02:00:06\nyou know, a little, uhmmm...\n\n00:02:00:06 - 00:02:01:10\na little crazy.\n\n00:02:01:10 - 00:02:08:04\nAnd then now to where it is\rnow, it's, it's very, much a community\n\n00:02:08:04 - 00:02:10:20\nportal or hub\rwhere people gather\n\n00:02:10:20 - 00:02:14:03\nand, you know, there's not too\rmuch, bad news coming out of there.\n\n00:02:14:03 - 00:02:17:07\nGrew up in that particular area\rbecause that's where my home is.\n\n00:02:17:07 - 00:02:22:10\nBut, I ventured out a lot\rwith some of the neighborhood kids.\n\n00:02:22:10 - 00:02:27:05\nIt was a lot of beach culture here\rearly in Venice for younger kids.\n\n00:02:27:05 - 00:02:30:22\nWe biked, we surfed,\rwe skateboarded, and we skated.\n\n00:02:30:23 - 00:02:33:13\nWe did all those forms of transportation.\n\n00:02:33:13 - 00:02:37:17\nI've been up and down\revery street and every alley\n\n00:02:37:17 - 00:02:41:16\nand a good portion of the homes\rin and around, that area.\n\n00:02:41:16 - 00:02:44:20\nSo, I know Venice pretty good.\n\n00:02:44:20 - 00:02:49:03\nSo Irvin Tabor is known\n\n00:02:49:03 - 00:02:52:21\nand recognized\ras being one of the pioneers,\n\n00:02:52:21 - 00:02:56:19\nsettling in what's now\rcalled the Oakwood Community.\n\n00:02:56:19 - 00:03:00:10\nWhat do you think about\rthat? That, being a relative.\n\n00:03:00:10 - 00:03:03:00\nNow, I think it's,\ryou know, it's great.\n\n00:03:03:00 - 00:03:05:12\nIt’s one of the\rreasons I'm here.\n\n00:03:05:12 - 00:03:07:10\nAs a child, I had no bearing.\n\n00:03:07:10 - 00:03:08:22\nI didn't understand the history.\n\n00:03:08:22 - 00:03:11:16\nI didn't understand\rthe significance of it.\n\n00:03:11:16 - 00:03:15:00\nSo I just knew that,\rlike, my grand uncle,\n\n00:03:15:00 - 00:03:20:10\nhe was just, this guy\rwho a lot of people gave praises to.\n\n00:03:20:10 - 00:03:25:03\nAnd he used to give us money, and I\rdidn't really understand it till I got older.\n\n00:03:25:03 - 00:03:30:15\nSo since you've been here since a child,\rhave you noticed a shift in the community?\n\n00:03:30:15 - 00:03:31:05\nOh, yeah.\n\n00:03:31:05 - 00:03:34:15\nOh yeah.\rA very dramatic shift.\n\n00:03:34:15 - 00:03:38:23\nA lot of people coming in.\rA lot of people coming out.\n\n00:03:38:23 - 00:03:41:09\nA lot of people getting\rmoved, pushed out\n\n00:03:41:09 - 00:03:45:09\nand a lot of people\rmaking their way in.\n\n00:03:45:09 - 00:03:47:16\nThe change has\rbeen subtle at times\n\n00:03:47:16 - 00:03:52:21\nand has been drastic at, at others.\rAnd even in certain areas of Venice.\n\n00:03:52:21 - 00:03:56:14\nDuring the ‘90s,\rthere was a lot of,\n\n00:03:56:14 - 00:04:01:04\ntrauma and turmoil with, uh...\rdrugs that affected me a lot.\n\n00:04:01:04 - 00:04:02:19\nA lot of my peers.\n\n00:04:02:19 - 00:04:05:07\nWe were at that age\rwhere it affected all of us.\n\n00:04:05:07 - 00:04:08:07\nSo we lost a lot of people\reither to incarceration\n\n00:04:08:07 - 00:04:12:19\nor to drug use or even death.\n\n00:04:12:19 - 00:04:14:16\nSo, uhmmm...\n\n00:04:14:16 - 00:04:16:17\nA lot of people\rthat I grew up with,\n\n00:04:16:17 - 00:04:21:04\na good majority of my teammates,\n\n00:04:21:04 - 00:04:24:05\nyou know, baseball, football\rteams are no longer here.\n\n00:04:24:05 - 00:04:29:02\nOakwood is a place that's been\ralways, always accepting of everybody.\n\n00:04:29:02 - 00:04:33:18\nWhere other parts of Venice\rhave been exclusive to some.\n\n00:04:33:18 - 00:04:37:11\nSo, Oakwood was also considered\n\n00:04:37:11 - 00:04:40:09\na place that had,\n\n00:04:40:09 - 00:04:44:01\na wild, wild West culture,\ryou know, you'd, uhmmm...\n\n00:04:44:01 - 00:04:46:11\nhave a lot of things that weren't...\n\n00:04:46:11 - 00:04:49:07\nuhmmm...\n\n00:04:49:07 - 00:04:52:05\nI don't know,\rwhat's the word to use?\n\n00:04:52:05 - 00:04:55:00\nfavored, by other\rparts of the community. \n\n00:04:55:00 - 00:04:56:12\nSo... uhmmm...\n\n00:04:56:12 - 00:05:00:19\nBut, at the same time,\rit had the character that everybody loved\n\n00:05:00:19 - 00:05:04:16\nthat other areas of\rVenice did not have that.\n\n00:05:04:16 - 00:05:08:16\n\rDo you mind talking a little bit about,\n\n00:05:08:16 - 00:05:11:21\nbecause I saw you in a,\rin another documentary\n\n00:05:11:21 - 00:05:15:11\nyou were talking about, like,\rthe social justice aspect of growing up\n\n00:05:15:11 - 00:05:19:06\na young black man in Venice\rduring the ‘70s and ’80s\n\n00:05:19:06 - 00:05:23:02\nand it’s obviously a subject\rthat's still pertinent today.\n\n00:05:23:02 - 00:05:24:12\nYeah.\n\n00:05:24:12 - 00:05:29:20\nGrowing up in the late ‘80s, it was,\rwe were subjugated to\n\n00:05:29:20 - 00:05:32:22\nwhat we call as teenagers\rare now young adults call it\n\n00:05:32:22 - 00:05:35:22\nthe crack years,\rwhich started in like late ‘80s.\n\n00:05:35:22 - 00:05:41:21\nAnd, it swept through Venice\rreally, really fast with, uhmmm...\n\n00:05:41:21 - 00:05:44:06\na lot of the young kids,\n\n00:05:44:06 - 00:05:47:18\nhaving access to these harder drugs.\n\n00:05:47:18 - 00:05:50:18\nAnd some of the parts of Venice\n\n00:05:50:18 - 00:05:55:05\nhave always been associated with,\ryou know, drugs and drug use,\n\n00:05:55:05 - 00:06:00:04\nbut never has it had\rthis detrimental, uhm, effect.\n\n00:06:00:04 - 00:06:03:03\nAnd mostly on the Black community.\n\n00:06:03:03 - 00:06:04:23\nIt was devastating. Overnight.\n\n00:06:04:23 - 00:06:10:01\nWithin five, six years,\ryou know, people's lives, their homes,\n\n00:06:10:01 - 00:06:15:00\ntheir families torn apart,\rnever to be, you know, put back together.\n\n00:06:15:00 - 00:06:17:03\nThere's people that left during that time.\n\n00:06:17:03 - 00:06:18:18\nNobody knows where they are.\n\n00:06:18:18 - 00:06:20:14\nIt was, uhmmm...\n\n00:06:20:14 - 00:06:22:21\npretty devastating to, to the community.\n\n00:06:22:21 - 00:06:26:02\nAnd it really never\rbounced back from that.\n\n00:06:26:02 - 00:06:30:19\nyou had people being incarcerated\rwho are just returning home.\n\n00:06:30:19 - 00:06:35:17\nIf they're able to return home now,\rwhich is, you know,\n\n00:06:35:17 - 00:06:37:22\nalmost 30 something years later.\n\n00:06:37:22 - 00:06:40:17\nSo...uhmmm...\n\n00:06:40:17 - 00:06:44:01\nall those people,\n\n00:06:44:01 - 00:06:45:02\nI just think about it.\n\n00:06:45:02 - 00:06:49:16\nI mean, if each one of those\rpersons had a child or two,\n\n00:06:49:16 - 00:06:53:08\nit could be a totally different place.\rBut just them being removed\n\n00:06:53:08 - 00:06:56:21\nout of society,\rwhether it be incarceration.\n\n00:06:56:21 - 00:07:00:10\nAnd there was a lot, a lot,\ra lot of death during that time,\n\n00:07:00:10 - 00:07:03:19\nAnd, not to mention\rjust people getting hooked on drugs.\n\n00:07:03:19 - 00:07:06:01\nIt was...uhmmm,\n\n00:07:06:01 - 00:07:07:21\nyou know, one of the\rmost devastating things\n\n00:07:07:21 - 00:07:11:08\nI've ever seen in my life.\rLike a war zone.\n\n00:07:11:08 - 00:07:15:18\nSo you feel like the\rpolice targeted Venice\n\n00:07:15:18 - 00:07:19:08\nin a way, the other parts\rof the city weren't targeted?\n\n00:07:19:08 - 00:07:23:08\nUhmmm...\rmaybe this particular area\n\n00:07:23:08 - 00:07:25:19\nwas targeted, but...\n\n00:07:25:19 - 00:07:28:05\nI also feel like there was...\n\n00:07:28:05 - 00:07:30:15\nuhmmm...\n\n00:07:30:15 - 00:07:32:14\nmaybe a lack of oversight\n\n00:07:32:14 - 00:07:37:22\nbecause the drugs\rjust had an overwhelming,\n\n00:07:37:22 - 00:07:39:19\neffect on everybody.\n\n00:07:39:19 - 00:07:42:00\nI mean, you could,\n\n00:07:42:00 - 00:07:45:13\nyou know, there was people\rwho were arrested, of course.\n\n00:07:45:13 - 00:07:50:05\nBut as far as the drug use\rand people getting hooked on it\n\n00:07:50:05 - 00:07:56:02\nand destroying not only their lives,\rbut everybody's life around them.\n\n00:07:56:02 - 00:07:59:09\nSo, I think that was,\n\n00:07:59:09 - 00:08:00:11\none of the causes.\n\n00:08:00:11 - 00:08:05:02\nBut I do think some of the laws\rthat were enacted, like ordinances\n\n00:08:05:02 - 00:08:08:02\nfor your home if\rsomeone was caught\n\n00:08:08:02 - 00:08:11:05\nselling drugs.\n\n00:08:11:05 - 00:08:12:14\nOn your property\n\n00:08:12:14 - 00:08:15:14\nor drugs were found\ron your property, they confiscated\n\n00:08:15:14 - 00:08:19:10\nthe land, they confiscated the property,\rand they put a fence around it for a year.\n\n00:08:19:10 - 00:08:21:20\nAnd so those homes\rweren't able to either,\n\n00:08:21:20 - 00:08:22:16\nif it was an apartment\n\n00:08:22:16 - 00:08:26:12\nand weren't able to collect rents.\rIt wasn't able to pay itself off.\n\n00:08:26:12 - 00:08:30:14\nI mean, in that properties were,\ryou know, end up being lost.\n\n00:08:30:14 - 00:08:38:20\nSo those are some of the little tactics\rI could say that I've witnessed.  And...\n\n00:08:38:20 - 00:08:41:03\nAs far as the\rpolicing of it, yeah,\n\n00:08:41:03 - 00:08:45:08\nthat was another part of, you know, a\rlot of kids getting incarcerated.\n\n00:08:45:08 - 00:08:50:17\nI say kids because it was mostly kids,\ryou know, mostly men under 23 years old.\n\n00:08:50:17 - 00:08:54:22\nThat came from the gang injunction\rwhich followed the drug wars and\n\n00:08:54:22 - 00:08:56:09\ndrug warns and then\rthe gang injunction.\n\n00:08:56:09 - 00:08:57:04\nYeah, gang.\n\n00:08:57:04 - 00:09:01:21\nAnd then you had all the\ryoung men who, maybe their parents\n\n00:09:01:21 - 00:09:06:21\nhad homes and had property, but,\n\n00:09:06:21 - 00:09:08:04\nthey had to put the property\n\n00:09:08:04 - 00:09:11:03\nup for bails and these type of things.\n\n00:09:11:03 - 00:09:17:02\nOr, there wasn't enough\ryoung men to take care of the property\n\n00:09:17:02 - 00:09:22:06\nand to see it through beyond, you know,\rwhether it be maintenance, repairs\n\n00:09:22:06 - 00:09:26:19\nor just day to day,\ryou know, keeping it up.\n\n00:09:26:19 - 00:09:34:12\nI noticed that a lot, that a lot of older,\relders in the community weren't able to,\n\n00:09:34:12 - 00:09:38:18\nyou know, keep their homes\rand keep them in shape\n\n00:09:38:18 - 00:09:43:01\nbecause there was no young men\rthere to do the work.\n\n00:09:43:01 - 00:09:44:21\nRight.\n\n00:09:44:21 - 00:09:47:03\nSo those were some of\rthe things that I witnessed.\n\n00:09:47:03 - 00:09:50:18\nAnd, you know, growing up\rduring that period, it was,\n\n00:09:50:18 - 00:09:52:14\nyou know, you had...\n\n00:09:52:14 - 00:09:54:14\nuhmmm...\n\n00:09:54:14 - 00:09:57:13\nthe church which, you know,\n\n00:09:57:13 - 00:09:59:22\nthe church made most of \rits money off funerals.\n\n00:09:59:22 - 00:10:02:04\n(laughs)\n\n00:10:02:04 - 00:10:04:05\nSo it was, uh...\n\n00:10:04:05 - 00:10:07:05\nYou know, a lot of kids that I knew\n\n00:10:07:05 - 00:10:09:08\nwere the kids that made it out.\n\n00:10:09:08 - 00:10:10:20\nUhmmm...\n\n00:10:10:20 - 00:10:12:05\nYeah.\n\n00:10:12:05 - 00:10:13:01\nOr had before.\n\n00:10:13:01 - 00:10:15:18\nBut there was so many that didn't make it.\n\n00:10:15:18 - 00:10:17:23\nThere was...uhmmm...\n\n00:10:17:23 - 00:10:18:07\nYeah.\n\n00:10:18:07 - 00:10:22:07\nSo many that didn't make it.\rWhich is, a shame.\n\n00:10:22:07 - 00:10:26:10\nAnd I think that's\rone of the main reasons that\n\n00:10:26:10 - 00:10:29:06\nyou lost some of the characters.\n\n00:10:29:06 - 00:10:31:18\nEven though there were\rsome kids that might have been\n\n00:10:31:18 - 00:10:37:19\nwhether they'd been dealing drugs\ror dealing around it, the ones that\n\n00:10:37:19 - 00:10:40:23\ncame through it and made,\rmade, made their way out of it\n\n00:10:40:23 - 00:10:44:07\nbecame stronger,\rand they became more...\n\n00:10:44:07 - 00:10:46:01\nin touch with the community.\n\n00:10:46:01 - 00:10:49:09\nBut the ones that didn't make it,\rI mean, you can just imagine\n\n00:10:49:09 - 00:10:52:17\njust half of those kids\rwould have made it through that.\n\n00:10:52:17 - 00:10:54:17\nI mean, they would have\rhad something to live for,\n\n00:10:54:17 - 00:10:55:14\nsomething to fight for.\n\n00:10:55:14 - 00:10:58:02\n\rThey would have had a \rneighborhood to take care of.\n\n00:10:58:02 - 00:11:00:14\nAnd so, now, you know, there's so\n\n00:11:00:14 - 00:11:04:15\nfew and, you know,\rthe generation is just lost.\n\n00:11:04:15 - 00:11:05:19\nIt’s almost like a war.\n\n00:11:05:19 - 00:11:09:00\nAnd it was, basically.\n\n00:11:09:00 - 00:11:11:11\nSo yeah, I do feel like,\n\n00:11:11:11 - 00:11:13:13\nyeah, there was...uhmmm...\n\n00:11:13:13 - 00:11:17:15\nWe were leaned on a lot.\rWhether you be a good kid or bad kid,\n\n00:11:17:15 - 00:11:22:04\nwe were all put in the same\rpicture frame and treated the same.\n\n00:11:22:04 - 00:11:25:09\nI mean, there's, I had never,\n\n00:11:25:09 - 00:11:29:14\nyou know, indulged in those activities,\rbut I was, I know the treatment.\n\n00:11:29:14 - 00:11:32:21\nI had some tutelage,\rI had some mentors that,\n\n00:11:32:21 - 00:11:34:17\nUhmmm...\n\n00:11:34:17 - 00:11:37:01\nWell, I was lucky enough to\rfind some people out there\n\n00:11:37:01 - 00:11:41:14\nwho helped me understand\rwhat was going on.\n\n00:11:41:14 - 00:11:46:01\nAnd I think not until,\n\n00:11:46:01 - 00:11:49:21\nlike the ‘90s, did it start being discussed\n\n00:11:49:21 - 00:11:53:00\nand documented\rwhat was, what was happening,\n\n00:11:53:00 - 00:11:56:22\nespecially to\rneighborhoods just like this?\n\n00:11:56:22 - 00:11:58:06\nSo I had a good understanding.\n\n00:11:58:06 - 00:12:02:20\nAnd plus I had my family heritage to,\rI guess you could say, secure it.\n\n00:12:02:20 - 00:12:06:02\nI kind of kept...\rif you knew your family's heritage,\n\n00:12:06:02 - 00:12:09:06\nit kind of kept you,\rkept you in line.\n\n00:12:09:06 - 00:12:12:10\nAnd that's one of the\rhistory lessons that you get.\n\n00:12:12:10 - 00:12:16:14\nYou have your family there \rtelling you, you know.\n\n00:12:16:14 - 00:12:20:10\nSo you're not able to...\n\n00:12:20:10 - 00:12:21:13\ncross that line\n\n00:12:21:13 - 00:12:25:03\nbecause you're, you're\rholding up the heritage of your family.\n\n00:12:25:03 - 00:12:27:11\nSo, and I'm sure other people\n\n00:12:27:11 - 00:12:31:07\nwould have done the same\rhad they known the heritage of their family.\n\n00:12:31:07 - 00:12:34:23\nSo that makes it very difficult\rand the hardest pill to swallow.\n\n00:12:34:23 - 00:12:36:12\nWhen I see it from the end.\n\n00:12:36:12 - 00:12:40:21\nIt’s harder to digest now as an\rolder man than it was back then.\n\n00:12:40:21 - 00:12:46:21\nSo what might be some of your future\raspirations for the Oakwood Community?\n\n00:12:46:21 - 00:12:49:15\nI’d like to see it stay diverse.\n\n00:12:49:15 - 00:12:53:05\nI like to see it...uhmmm...\n\n00:12:53:05 - 00:12:54:14\nThere's a lot to ask for.\n\n00:12:54:14 - 00:12:56:18\nI mean, you know,\ras far as going forward.\n\n00:12:56:18 - 00:13:00:22\nI wouldn't like it to be\rfully sanitized, like maybe other parts\n\n00:13:00:22 - 00:13:04:06\nof other communities\rin other beach cities in California.\n\n00:13:04:06 - 00:13:07:13\nIt always has this distinction of...\n\n00:13:07:13 - 00:13:11:14\na little bit of rough\raround the edges and...\n\n00:13:11:14 - 00:13:15:10\nalways accepting of character,\rpeople, especially new people coming in.\n\n00:13:15:10 - 00:13:20:01\nSo, long as they don't,\rtake that away, should be okay.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://veniceheritagemuseum.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2416/collection_resources/129354/file/243111#t=0.0,809.6"}]}]}]}
