00:00:10:04\nMark Libow, September, 1946.\n\n00:00:10:06 - 00:00:13:06\nOur family moved here,\n\n00:00:13:11 - 00:00:16:11\nwell, my dad moved here from Chicago,\n\n00:00:16:15 - 00:00:19:04\nand he grew up in Echo Park area.\n\n00:00:19:04 - 00:00:23:06\nAnd then his father, my grandfather,\rhis name was Harry,\n\n00:00:23:11 - 00:00:25:12\neverybody called him Pop.\n\n00:00:25:12 - 00:00:28:13\nHe had a barbershop on the boardwalk here,\n\n00:00:28:13 - 00:00:30:16\nlong, long before I came along.\n\n00:00:30:16 - 00:00:32:10\nVenice was pretty incredible,\n\n00:00:32:10 - 00:00:33:20\nto tell you the truth.\n\n00:00:33:20 - 00:00:37:20\nI think we were in paradise, but we didn't realize it.\r“What was incredible?”\n\n00:00:37:21 - 00:00:41:02\nBecause we had the beautiful Pacific Ocean,\n\n00:00:41:07 - 00:00:45:14\nand Dad was a lifeguard\rhere in Venice in the thirties,\n\n00:00:45:16 - 00:00:49:12\nso he taught us how to \rswim and dive and fish.\n\n00:00:49:18 - 00:00:54:07\nOur whole family, we're fishing fools, if you will.\n\n00:00:54:09 - 00:00:58:12\nWe did a lot of fishing on\ron the different piers\n\n00:00:58:14 - 00:01:02:00\nthat were here, Lick Pier,\rwhich had joined the Ocean Park Pier\n\n00:01:02:00 - 00:01:08:00\nand then later on POP was the Disneyland\rby the sea, if you will.\n\n00:01:08:02 - 00:01:13:09\nWe fished under the catwalks of, of both piers.\n\n00:01:13:09 - 00:01:18:05\nBut the scariest one\rthat had the most amount of fish\n\n00:01:18:07 - 00:01:20:15\nwas the short pier called Lick Pier\n\n00:01:20:15 - 00:01:23:15\nand it was owned by two ladies\n\n00:01:23:19 - 00:01:25:21\nand their last name was Lick\n\n00:01:25:21 - 00:01:29:09\nbelieve it or not, that's a story\rI've heard throughout the years.\n\n00:01:29:11 - 00:01:32:15\nSo as you went out on the catwalk,\n\n00:01:32:17 - 00:01:36:17\nthere was two mossy 2’ by 12’s\n\n00:01:36:19 - 00:01:41:16\nand at the, before you got\rto the end of Lick Pier to go fishing\n\n00:01:41:21 - 00:01:47:12\nfor Piling Perch and Surf\rPerch and stuff like Corbina\n\n00:01:47:14 - 00:01:51:15\nyou had to walk by this gigantic,\n\n00:01:51:17 - 00:01:54:22\ndangerous looking\n\n00:01:55:00 - 00:01:58:09\ngenerator that was underneath Lick Pier.\n\n00:01:58:09 - 00:02:03:13\nIt was like a condenser actually, it had like\rtwo inch cables coming into it.\n\n00:02:03:13 - 00:02:04:11\nIt was real scary.\n\n00:02:04:11 - 00:02:07:22\nSo you had to walk with your fishing gear\rand slide\n\n00:02:07:22 - 00:02:12:00\npast it, about ten, twelve foot sliding past it.\n\n00:02:12:02 - 00:02:14:13\nThat was a relief once you got past it.\n\n00:02:14:13 - 00:02:17:08\nSo you didn't wanna to grab it.,\rI could tell you that.\n\n00:02:17:08 - 00:02:18:22\nAnd then we had fish out on the end.\n\n00:02:18:22 - 00:02:21:19\nThere was planks out there\rand you'd sit on the planks.\n\n00:02:21:19 - 00:02:25:17\nThey would kind of sway.\rWe had some classic characters\n\n00:02:25:17 - 00:02:29:02\non the boardwalk\rthat roamed here all the time.\n\n00:02:29:04 - 00:02:34:03\nAnd one of the places\rI got some unique education\n\n00:02:34:05 - 00:02:37:11\non Marine Street was called Chaney's Pool Hall.\n\n00:02:37:16 - 00:02:40:14\nChaney was a big,\rI never knew his first name.\n\n00:02:40:14 - 00:02:41:20\nHis name was Chaney.\n\n00:02:41:20 - 00:02:45:21\nHe owned the joint and an old, old man named DA Jones\r\n\n00:02:45:21 - 00:02:51:00\nran, was the manager and it cost 25 cents\n\n00:02:51:02 - 00:02:54:22\nto play pool for an hour,  25 cents an hour.\n\n00:02:54:22 - 00:02:56:23\nBeautiful Brunswick tables.\n\n00:02:56:23 - 00:02:59:15\nSo one day Chaney bought\n\n00:02:59:15 - 00:03:03:16\na brand new colored TV\rand it was about eight foot in the air.\n\n00:03:03:18 - 00:03:06:00\nAnd he was real proud of it, you know.\n\n00:03:06:00 - 00:03:09:00\nSo we had the number one table up front,\n\n00:03:09:05 - 00:03:11:21\nand I think I was breaking something,\n\n00:03:11:21 - 00:03:14:07\nit was a breaking ball, boom\n\n00:03:14:07 - 00:03:17:22\nand I lofted the ball off the table.\n\n00:03:18:04 - 00:03:22:10\nChaney is behind\rthe desk and the place had\n\n00:03:22:12 - 00:03:23:19\napproximately two by\n\n00:03:23:19 - 00:03:26:20\ntwo inch diamond tiles, black and white\n\n00:03:26:21 - 00:03:30:01\ndiamond tiles throughout the whole floor.\n\n00:03:30:03 - 00:03:31:10\nWhat did it do?\n\n00:03:31:10 - 00:03:34:11\nBoom goes up about eight foot\n\n00:03:34:13 - 00:03:38:04\nsmacks Chaney's brand new colored TV.\n\n00:03:38:06 - 00:03:39:23\nOh boy, he really got pissed.\n\n00:03:39:23 - 00:03:41:15\nThough it didn't break it.\n\n00:03:41:15 - 00:03:42:21\nThank God for me.\n\n00:03:42:21 - 00:03:47:01\nIt didn't break, so... that was one of my...uh,\n\n00:03:47:03 - 00:03:49:08\nI got educated real quick.\n\n00:03:49:08 - 00:03:54:10\nYou know, I remember if we were good kids,\rGrandpa would take us to Zucky’s\n\n00:03:54:12 - 00:03:57:20\nand they sold corned beef sandwiches\n\n00:03:57:22 - 00:04:01:21\nright on the corner of Marine Street\rand all the old gals,\n\n00:04:01:21 - 00:04:06:03\nthe old yentas, as the old Jewish ladies\rwould hang out there on the benches.\n\n00:04:06:05 - 00:04:09:09\nAnd I think the sandwiches were 35 cents.\n\n00:04:09:09 - 00:04:14:20\nSo that was a big treat to get, to get, to\rget a corned beef sandwich from Zucky’s.\n\n00:04:14:22 - 00:04:18:02\nThe name of the business is Elco\rWelding and Engineering.\n\n00:04:18:02 - 00:04:19:19\nWe moved there,\n\n00:04:19:19 - 00:04:25:01\nit was late 1966.\rSo all the timber for our building\n\n00:04:25:01 - 00:04:30:01\nwas brought up\rfrom San Pedro on a horse drawn cart.\n\n00:04:30:02 - 00:04:32:04\nTook two days to get to Venice.\n\n00:04:32:04 - 00:04:35:20\nThere's a faded mural\rbehind the sign outside on the brick wall\n\n00:04:36:02 - 00:04:37:17\ncalled Kix Soda Pop,\n\n00:04:37:17 - 00:04:41:01\nVenice, California,\rwhere the bathing beauty\n\n00:04:41:01 - 00:04:45:23\nfrom the 20’s, one piece suit and\n\n00:04:46:01 - 00:04:50:09\nthey made a little soda pop,\rbut they made a lot of illegal booze\n\n00:04:50:09 - 00:04:54:10\nbecause from 1918 to 1933,\n\n00:04:54:12 - 00:04:58:04\nProhibition was going on\rand people still wanted booze,\n\n00:04:58:04 - 00:04:59:22\nthey wanted to drink.\n\n00:04:59:22 - 00:05:03:17\nSo there's a pit in there.\n\n00:05:03:19 - 00:05:08:04\nAnd you can see that there was a water\rcompany across from the railroad tracks.\n\n00:05:08:04 - 00:05:12:13\nRight behind our shop was a water company,\rand they would pipe over,\n\n00:05:12:13 - 00:05:14:19\nI guess, distilled water into the pit\n\n00:05:14:19 - 00:05:18:17\nto make bathtub gin or whatever\rthey were making that week.\n\n00:05:18:20 - 00:05:23:20\nThe front half was automotive repair\rand the back half was soda pop\n\n00:05:23:22 - 00:05:28:22\nmaking, supposedly.  Potent soda.\n\n00:05:29:00 - 00:05:31:19\nWe've done a lot of work for blue chip artists.\n\n00:05:31:19 - 00:05:34:19\nThey get the credit, but that's okay.\n\n00:05:34:23 - 00:05:37:05\nOne of the best art\n\n00:05:37:05 - 00:05:39:19\nthings that I've ever done was for\n\n00:05:39:19 - 00:05:43:15\nCharles Eames at Ray Eames of the last thing\n\n00:05:43:15 - 00:05:47:16\nthat came out of their shop,\rI actually welded together.\n\n00:05:47:18 - 00:05:49:21\nA very nice man named Don,\n\n00:05:49:21 - 00:05:53:03\nwho had, was, I guess, deaf in both ears,\n\n00:05:53:03 - 00:05:54:02\nhe had hearing aids.\n\n00:05:54:02 - 00:05:57:03\nHe came in and introduced himself\n\n00:05:57:03 - 00:06:01:13\none day years ago. \r Said, “You know, I'd like you to do this for me.\n\n00:06:01:13 - 00:06:03:22\nI don't, we don't really care what it costs.\n\n00:06:03:22 - 00:06:08:21\nI just want it to look real neat.”\rHe worked with me for, I don’t know,  about a day\n\n00:06:08:21 - 00:06:12:07\nand a half and I welded it all together\n\n00:06:12:07 - 00:06:15:08\nand then Don took it away.\n\n00:06:15:09 - 00:06:16:17\nThen he came back.\n\n00:06:16:17 - 00:06:20:02\nI guess he painted it\rmaybe at their facility.\n\n00:06:20:04 - 00:06:25:10\nAnd it turns out my welds are holding\n\n00:06:25:12 - 00:06:29:04\nthe first Gutenberg Bible that was ever printed.\n\n00:06:29:06 - 00:06:32:10\nIt was made, the stand was made at Elco Welding.\n\n00:06:32:10 - 00:06:35:14\nAnd he, Don gave us credit for it.\rIt’s at the Huntington.\n\n00:06:35:16 - 00:06:38:18\nYeah. How about that?\n\n00:06:38:20 - 00:06:40:23\nYeah.\n\n00:06:40:23 - 00:06:43:08\nWe hope it doesn't break.\n\n00:06:43:08 - 00:06:45:17\nWe don't want it to break.\n\n00:06:45:17 - 00:06:48:06\nI think all the unique characters\n\n00:06:48:06 - 00:06:53:10\nthat I saw every day roaming the boardwalk\rand hanging out at Chaney's\n\n00:06:53:10 - 00:06:58:01\npool halls\rand a few other interesting places,\n\n00:06:58:03 - 00:07:02:01\nI think that kind of got permanently\retched in my brain.\n\n00:07:02:05 - 00:07:06:21\nThe beach opens up an awareness\rwhen they come to the beach,\n\n00:07:06:21 - 00:07:10:04\nI think you\rif you live in some crowded part of L.A.\n\n00:07:10:04 - 00:07:14:09\nor New Jersey or NYC or somewhere,\ryou can kind of\n\n00:07:14:11 - 00:07:17:01\nforget the problems\n\n00:07:17:01 - 00:07:20:18\non your mind\rand kind of release yourself.\n\n00:07:20:20 - 00:07:24:04\nAnd you know, on the boardwalk, which is, there's\n\n00:07:24:04 - 00:07:27:04\na lot of people releasing on the boardwalk.\n\n00:07:27:10 - 00:07:31:07\nAnd it's always been like that,\ra lot of different characters.\n\n00:07:31:07 - 00:07:36:16\nI think it, yeah,  I think it kind of frees you up being near\n\n00:07:36:16 - 00:07:41:06\nthe ocean and the entertainers\rand things like that.\n\n00:07:41:08 - 00:07:44:16\nI think it's a good experience, good overall\n\n00:07:44:18 - 00:07:48:01\nbody experience, mind and body experience,\n\n00:07:48:01 - 00:07:50:23\nI, you know, I think that's what happens.\n\n00:07:50:23 - 00:07:52:19\nYeah, people love coming to Venice.\n\n00:07:52:19 - 00:07:55:14\nIt's a big tourist attraction. We know that.\n\n00:07:55:14 - 00:07:58:19\nNow I guess we're still in paradise.\n\n00:07:58:20 - 00:08:02:12\nIt's just a different...\n\n00:08:02:16 - 00:08:05:06\nIt's just a different episode, I should say.\n\n00:08:05:06 - 00:08:07:00\nYeah, it's just a different episode.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://veniceheritagemuseum.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2416/collection_resources/108839/file/222035#t=0.0,506.752"}]}]}]}
