00:00:06:07\nDate of birth?\n\n00:00:06:07 - 00:00:10:17\nYou just gonna out me on camera\rin public for the whole world.\n\n00:00:10:19 - 00:00:11:02\nAll right.\n\n00:00:11:02 - 00:00:15:05\nI am Terrell Ferguson, as you've known\rsince we were 10, 11 years old\n\n00:00:15:05 - 00:00:16:19\nor since I was 10, 11 years old.\n\n00:00:16:19 - 00:00:23:08\nMy date of birth is August\rthe 14th, 1960’mmm, 1969.\n\n00:00:23:10 - 00:00:26:10\n“And do you live in Venice\ror what years did you happen to live in...?”\n\n00:00:26:12 - 00:00:29:08\nSo here's the ironic part\rabout my journey with Venice.\n\n00:00:29:08 - 00:00:32:22\nI have never, in my natural born\rlife lived in Venice.\n\n00:00:33:03 - 00:00:35:19\nHowever, I have lived in Venice.\n\n00:00:35:19 - 00:00:37:14\nWhat I mean by that is I'm an L.A.\n\n00:00:37:14 - 00:00:39:21\nkid, South Central LA,\n\n00:00:39:21 - 00:00:42:00\nand then once I had kids, the valley.\n\n00:00:42:00 - 00:00:45:00\nBut I've been in Venice every weekend,\n\n00:00:45:01 - 00:00:48:11\nmost holidays and some random week days\n\n00:00:48:11 - 00:00:52:20\nfor the entirety of my life,\rprobably since roughly summer of 1979.\n\n00:00:52:20 - 00:00:57:14\nSo my earliest memories of Venice\ris my dad's shooting hoops\n\n00:00:57:14 - 00:01:00:17\nand I wasn't big enough or girth’y enough\ror tall enough to shoot\n\n00:01:00:17 - 00:01:04:23\nhoops at 9 about to be 10 years old\r‘cause, you know, summertime gets out,\n\n00:01:04:23 - 00:01:06:15\nmy dads an every other weekend dad\n\n00:01:06:15 - 00:01:09:14\nhe would go play basketball\rand he would drop me off\n\n00:01:09:14 - 00:01:13:22\nat the original Venice Skate Circle,\rwhich was where the playground is now.\n\n00:01:14:00 - 00:01:16:17\nBut it was adjacent\rto the basketball courts.\n\n00:01:16:17 - 00:01:20:08\nSo my dad, who was every other weekend\rand didn't want to stop his weekend\n\n00:01:20:08 - 00:01:22:21\nfor his little crumb snatcher, said,\n\n00:01:22:21 - 00:01:27:09\n“Hmmm, Venice, skating, I can play basketball.\n\n00:01:27:09 - 00:01:30:12\nI can keep one eye on my son \n\n00:01:30:12 - 00:01:33:12\nwhile still yelling at people\rthat it was a foul, or it wasn't a foul.”\n\n00:01:33:12 - 00:01:35:23\nAnd so he would take me over\rto the skate circle\n\n00:01:35:23 - 00:01:38:23\nand sometimes he'd bring the wrong skates\ror had me in the little Street\n\n00:01:38:23 - 00:01:42:20\nKings with the metal wheels, white skates,\rhad people laughing at me, you know,\n\n00:01:42:20 - 00:01:45:00\nbecause we weren't as progressive\ras we are now.\n\n00:01:45:00 - 00:01:47:10\nSo a little boy\rin white skates from South Central.\n\n00:01:47:10 - 00:01:49:15\nIt was kinda odd. But, umm...\n\n00:01:49:15 - 00:01:54:12\n‘Another One Bites The Dust’ \rwas, was playing at the time\n\n00:01:54:12 - 00:01:59:03\nand it was like,\rso my first image was going to the skate\n\n00:01:59:03 - 00:02:02:15\nwhat was then the skate circle\rand hearing ‘Another One Bites the Dust’\n\n00:02:02:17 - 00:02:07:00\nand ‘Funkytown’\rand old Gap Band songs from the ‘70’s.\n\n00:02:07:00 - 00:02:11:19\nSo my, my image of Venice,\rmy very first initial image of Venice\n\n00:02:11:19 - 00:02:15:09\nis basketball players\ryelling and arguing and music and people\n\n00:02:15:09 - 00:02:17:14\nrolling around with smiles on their faces.\n\n00:02:17:14 - 00:02:20:12\nWhen I started skating, I was 9 with\n\n00:02:20:12 - 00:02:23:15\nfeet that were too big and clothes\rthat were too small.\n\n00:02:23:15 - 00:02:26:14\nAnd so I watched this group of people\n\n00:02:26:14 - 00:02:28:15\nand I’m like, man,\rthey look like they're having fun.\n\n00:02:28:15 - 00:02:30:04\nThe music was loud.\n\n00:02:30:04 - 00:02:31:22\nBob was his name.\n\n00:02:31:22 - 00:02:33:02\nI don't even know his last name.\n\n00:02:33:02 - 00:02:36:14\nHe had thick thighs and an afro\rand he was real cool, he wore sunglasses,\n\n00:02:36:14 - 00:02:39:04\nthose kind that you wear\rwhen you're snowboarding or skiing.\n\n00:02:39:04 - 00:02:42:14\nHe would bring a white van out\rand he put house speakers in it.\n\n00:02:42:14 - 00:02:45:07\nHe had literal speakers\rfrom the living room\n\n00:02:45:07 - 00:02:48:07\nthat everybody from the ‘70, ’80s remembers\rthose big old speakers.\n\n00:02:48:08 - 00:02:52:04\nAnd he would charge his battery,\rhis car battery to the speakers.\n\n00:02:52:06 - 00:02:55:17\nAnd it was like your auntie's\rliving room on a holiday.\n\n00:02:55:17 - 00:02:57:22\nAnd except for it was every weekend.\n\n00:02:57:22 - 00:03:02:00\nMy big skate mentor\ror OG, as we called him, is Mad.\n\n00:03:02:00 - 00:03:05:17\nMad would build his own music box systems\n\n00:03:05:17 - 00:03:09:23\nand there'd be like car speakers\rbuilt into this box and he would put\n\n00:03:09:23 - 00:03:12:08\nskateboard wheels on the bottom\rso he could roll it out,\n\n00:03:12:08 - 00:03:17:08\nthought all the things through.\rSo Bob would bring the van early.\n\n00:03:17:08 - 00:03:21:00\nMad said, “Okay, let me take what he's\rdoing, make it smaller, but just as loud.”\n\n00:03:21:00 - 00:03:22:12\nHe advanced it.\n\n00:03:22:12 - 00:03:24:07\nSo now there's more people coming.\n\n00:03:24:07 - 00:03:26:01\nMusic attracts people.\n\n00:03:26:01 - 00:03:26:23\nEverybody.\n\n00:03:26:23 - 00:03:27:07\nYou might\n\n00:03:27:07 - 00:03:30:23\nwe might not like the same type of music\ror I might listen to this kind of music,\n\n00:03:30:23 - 00:03:34:00\nbut music is gonna\ralways attract people.\n\n00:03:34:00 - 00:03:38:14\nSo now you have great skaters and dancers\rbeginning skaters and dancers,\n\n00:03:38:14 - 00:03:42:07\nall types of men,\rwomen, old, young, gay, straight.\n\n00:03:42:07 - 00:03:45:02\nSo we didn't have to be so specific\rwith our\n\n00:03:45:02 - 00:03:48:13\nour diversity\rbecause it was built in, it was natural,\n\n00:03:48:13 - 00:03:52:09\nit was organic,\rand it wasn't even like we tried.\n\n00:03:52:09 - 00:03:56:05\nI like if you're nice to me,\rI'm going to be nice to you, period.\n\n00:03:56:05 - 00:03:59:22\nLike, I don't even need to know\ryour back story or anything else.\n\n00:03:59:22 - 00:04:03:15\nIt's a very simple thing of whoever\rtreats me well, I'm going to treat well.\n\n00:04:03:15 - 00:04:06:12\nAnd I think me, is Venice at that point.\n\n00:04:06:12 - 00:04:08:16\nLike whoever treats him well,\rhe's going to treat well,\n\n00:04:08:16 - 00:04:09:18\nwhoever treat her well,\n\n00:04:09:18 - 00:04:12:18\nand it doesn't matter who you are\ror what you represent,\n\n00:04:12:18 - 00:04:16:01\nbecause we're here having a good time\ron the basketball courts.\n\n00:04:16:01 - 00:04:16:16\nThey're there,\n\n00:04:16:16 - 00:04:18:19\nthey don't care if you’re tall,\rshort, fat, skinny,\n\n00:04:18:19 - 00:04:22:10\nwhite, black, Venice is naturally inclusive.\n\n00:04:22:10 - 00:04:25:04\nSo we didn’t have to have\rinclusionary rules\n\n00:04:25:04 - 00:04:29:17\nbecause it's who we are as a community,\rfor better or for worse,\n\n00:04:29:17 - 00:04:32:17\neven though I wasn't a resident of Venice,\n\n00:04:32:17 - 00:04:35:14\nI was raised and bred by Venice Beach.\n\n00:04:35:14 - 00:04:39:07\nThe thing that separates Venice\rfrom everybody else\n\n00:04:39:07 - 00:04:44:06\nand keeps Venice together\ris that all these little micro communities\n\n00:04:44:06 - 00:04:47:23\nfully functioned on their own\rand by the same token,\n\n00:04:47:23 - 00:04:52:11\nmix and blend together like they're second\rcousins from 40 years ago.\n\n00:04:52:11 - 00:04:56:03\n“Is there a thing about Venice\rthat you specifically think people don't\n\n00:04:56:03 - 00:04:59:17\nknow but they should?”\n\n00:04:59:17 - 00:05:02:13\nThat it was black and brown originally.\n\n00:05:02:13 - 00:05:05:05\nIt was built by black and brown,\n\n00:05:05:05 - 00:05:08:17\nbecause in L.A.\n\n00:05:08:17 - 00:05:10:18\nCentral Ave\rused to be one of the few places you could\n\n00:05:10:18 - 00:05:15:12\nbuy property if you were black, brown\ror Asian and Jewish also.\n\n00:05:15:12 - 00:05:17:16\nBut Central Ave was one of the few places.\n\n00:05:17:16 - 00:05:19:12\nThat's why South Central was special.\n\n00:05:19:12 - 00:05:21:15\nNothing changed in South L.A.\rThat's different.\n\n00:05:21:15 - 00:05:26:19\nVenice was a similar thing in the beach\rcommunity, whereas you couldn't go,\n\n00:05:26:19 - 00:05:30:14\nI think it was,\rI think it was Pico on the north side.\n\n00:05:30:14 - 00:05:33:21\nYou couldn't really go past Pico,\rand I don't know where it was\n\n00:05:33:21 - 00:05:36:06\non the South Side,\rbut I know, don't go into Santa\n\n00:05:36:06 - 00:05:40:03\nMonica past Pico,\rbut have a good time in Venice.\n\n00:05:40:05 - 00:05:41:04\nI think it was Dockweiler.\n\n00:05:41:04 - 00:05:41:21\nI think Dockweiler\n\n00:05:41:21 - 00:05:46:09\nwas the southernmost border,\rbut like basically all of those beaches\n\n00:05:46:09 - 00:05:51:09\nnorth of Pico and south of Dockweiler,\rdon't go there, but hey, \n\n00:05:51:09 - 00:05:55:13\nhave a good time with you and the family\rin Venice, because your people built it.\n\n00:05:55:13 - 00:05:59:20\nAnd so we let some of you stay here\rand you've built generations here.\n\n00:05:59:20 - 00:06:03:21\nAnd I think that people don't know\rthat it was built by black and brown,\n\n00:06:03:21 - 00:06:06:23\nnot necessarily for black and brown,\rbecause Abbot Kinney\n\n00:06:06:23 - 00:06:10:05\noriginally thought of Venice\ras like a carnival town.\n\n00:06:10:05 - 00:06:13:07\nLike, uh,  what's the place in New York\rwith the, Coney Island?\n\n00:06:13:07 - 00:06:15:07\nLike, I think in his head,\n\n00:06:15:07 - 00:06:17:19\nI mean, I wasn’t there\rbecause obviously it was 100 years ago\n\n00:06:17:19 - 00:06:19:19\nand I might be old,\rbut I'm not that damn old.\n\n00:06:19:19 - 00:06:23:08\nBut I think in his head, reading\rwhat I've read on Abbot Kinney,\n\n00:06:23:08 - 00:06:27:08\nwho was, I guess the founder of Venice\rfor lack of a better term.\n\n00:06:27:09 - 00:06:31:04\nI know he's a street now, \rbut he was the founder of Venice.\n\n00:06:31:04 - 00:06:34:13\nI think he saw it as a Coney Island\rfor the rich and the playful.\n\n00:06:34:13 - 00:06:37:20\nAnd then it didn't quite go\rthe way he thought, but\n\n00:06:37:20 - 00:06:40:22\nstill popular\rjust in a different way that he thought.\n\n00:06:40:22 - 00:06:43:19\nAnd I guess to his credit,\rhe kind of went with it.\n\n00:06:43:19 - 00:06:48:20\nI don't see that that was his vision,\rbut he had a happy accident.\n\n00:06:48:20 - 00:06:52:06\nAnd instead of ruining it\rand starting over, he just went with it.\n\n00:06:52:06 - 00:06:56:16\nAnd, and that shaping things\rwith black and brown people, building it\n\n00:06:56:16 - 00:06:59:22\nand allowing Jewish people\rand Asian people and Hispanic people\n\n00:06:59:22 - 00:07:03:07\nand black people\rto come and have a good time together,\n\n00:07:03:08 - 00:07:05:14\nmaybe this was the only time\rthey could not work.\n\n00:07:05:14 - 00:07:08:11\nMaybe they had one day a week to not work.\n\n00:07:08:11 - 00:07:10:21\nAnd I want to spend it at the beach.\n\n00:07:10:21 - 00:07:13:04\nOh, because it's 114 degrees in L.A.\n\n00:07:13:04 - 00:07:15:00\nLet's come to Venice.\rLet's have a good time.\n\n00:07:15:00 - 00:07:17:09\nLet's get in the water.  Let's, let's surf.\n\n00:07:17:09 - 00:07:19:18\nLet's kick the water around.\rLet's play with the dog.\n\n00:07:19:18 - 00:07:22:05\nLet's take the kids out\rand throw them in the sand\n\n00:07:22:05 - 00:07:24:16\nand build sandcastles\rand bury them in the sand.\n\n00:07:24:16 - 00:07:26:12\nYou could do all of that in Venice.\n\n00:07:26:12 - 00:07:29:22\nAnd it was one of the only places in L.A.\n\n00:07:29:22 - 00:07:30:17\nthat you could.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://veniceheritagemuseum.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2416/collection_resources/119605/file/225692#t=0.0,472.59733"}]}]}]}
