00:00:59:16\nSo I came and stayed.\n\n00:00:59:17 - 00:01:04:22\nI came from Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania, town of 3000\n\n00:01:05:00 - 00:01:07:15\nin northwestern Pennsylvania.\n\n00:01:07:15 - 00:01:11:18\nBefore I came here, I graduated\rfrom nurses training in Pittsburgh,\n\n00:01:11:20 - 00:01:15:12\nworked in Cleveland for a year,\rand my friends called and said,\n\n00:01:15:12 - 00:01:19:07\n“We're moving to California.\rWe don't know where,\n\n00:01:19:09 - 00:01:20:06\nin two weeks.”\n\n00:01:20:06 - 00:01:21:16\nAnd I said, “I'm in.”\n\n00:01:21:16 - 00:01:24:16\nSo that was in 1965.\n\n00:01:24:17 - 00:01:28:00\nCame out here and I was a nurse.\n\n00:01:28:03 - 00:01:31:09\nBut my first job was a go go dancer.\n\n00:01:31:10 - 00:01:34:18\nI mean, I've lived in various areas\rand there are some very cool\n\n00:01:34:18 - 00:01:38:06\nareas in Los Angeles, like,\ryou know, Silverlake and Echo Park.\n\n00:01:38:07 - 00:01:43:01\nBut, um, Venice is so unique in that...\n\n00:01:43:03 - 00:01:47:22\nI, uh, the biggest thing for me\rwas that it's just, it has this,\n\n00:01:48:00 - 00:01:50:12\nyou're encouraged to be who you are.\n\n00:01:50:12 - 00:01:52:18\nI mean, there was no judgment.\n\n00:01:52:18 - 00:01:55:08\nEvery kind of person imaginable.\n\n00:01:55:08 - 00:01:58:10\nAnd after coming from 3000 people\rin Northwestern\n\n00:01:58:13 - 00:02:01:16\nPennsylvania, I was like, this is it.\n\n00:02:01:16 - 00:02:03:06\nThis is what I'm looking for.\n\n00:02:03:06 - 00:02:05:08\nAnd I just, it just felt right.\n\n00:02:05:08 - 00:02:07:21\nI came out once I was here.\n\n00:02:07:21 - 00:02:13:19\nI mean, there's no way I could come out\rin a little town, Pennsylvania.\n\n00:02:13:19 - 00:02:16:01\nI mean, that would never be accepted.\n\n00:02:16:01 - 00:02:20:13\nSo, you know, I when I came out here,\rI wasn't out,\n\n00:02:20:13 - 00:02:26:04\nbut it certainly was in my heart\rand on my mind.\n\n00:02:26:04 - 00:02:30:14\nI mean, I can remember my first\rexperience going to a bar\n\n00:02:30:14 - 00:02:34:00\nArnie’s and just going in there\rso frightened\n\n00:02:34:00 - 00:02:38:04\nand just sat at the bar and ordered a beer\rand, and had the beer and then left.\n\n00:02:38:05 - 00:02:41:18\nI mean, so\rI wasn't a big part of the bar scene\n\n00:02:41:18 - 00:02:44:21\nuntil maybe about the mid-seventies\n\n00:02:44:21 - 00:02:48:22\nand then started going berserk.\n\n00:02:48:22 - 00:02:50:22\nThen I really got into it.\n\n00:02:50:22 - 00:02:52:12\nThere was a lot of freedom in it.\n\n00:02:52:12 - 00:02:56:16\nHowever, I still worked at jobs\rthat I had to pretend I was straight.\n\n00:02:56:16 - 00:02:58:23\nBeing a nurse was not something,\n\n00:02:58:23 - 00:03:01:01\nit was my stepmother's dream\n\n00:03:01:01 - 00:03:04:06\nand I really did not want to be a nurse.\n\n00:03:04:06 - 00:03:07:09\nSo I stopped being a nurse\n\n00:03:07:09 - 00:03:10:12\nand was,\ryou know, exploring other avenues.\n\n00:03:10:12 - 00:03:12:20\nWent off to Europe for five months,\n\n00:03:12:20 - 00:03:16:15\ncame back,\rand that's when I started my own business.\n\n00:03:16:17 - 00:03:18:11\n“Talk about your business.”\rOkay.\n\n00:03:18:11 - 00:03:20:23\nIt was Moe’s Greens and Things\n\n00:03:20:23 - 00:03:26:01\nand I had this ‘54 truck\rthat I drove a across country\n\n00:03:26:01 - 00:03:29:07\nfrom Pennsylvania with my dog, and\n\n00:03:29:11 - 00:03:32:17\nI think that truck was $200.\n\n00:03:32:19 - 00:03:35:14\nAnd I then got a camera on it\n\n00:03:35:14 - 00:03:38:15\nand my friend said, “You know, what about\n\n00:03:38:15 - 00:03:42:09\nbeing, you know, having a little route\raround Venice and Santa Monica\n\n00:03:42:09 - 00:03:46:04\nwith vegetables, like and, you know,\rI grew up with that.\n\n00:03:46:06 - 00:03:49:15\nSo I said, yeah, “Not a bad idea.”\n\n00:03:49:17 - 00:03:54:23\nWent out and got a business\rlicense, had my truck and a friend Donald\n\n00:03:55:01 - 00:03:59:21\nput on a camper,\ra wooden camper, enclosed and off\n\n00:03:59:21 - 00:04:04:15\nI went to the market like,\rI mean, that market was like its own city.\n\n00:04:04:17 - 00:04:07:08\nIt was, you know,\rbooming from three in the morning.\n\n00:04:07:08 - 00:04:11:02\nSo my friend and I went\rdown there to check it out.\n\n00:04:11:03 - 00:04:11:19\nAnd it was\n\n00:04:11:19 - 00:04:15:22\na bit intimidating because, number one,\rit was all guys\n\n00:04:15:22 - 00:04:20:21\nI met this, one of the vendors\rand he was such a cool guy.\n\n00:04:20:21 - 00:04:22:03\nAnd I said, “You know, I'm going\n\n00:04:22:03 - 00:04:25:21\nto start coming down here and delivering\rvegetables to the neighborhood.”\n\n00:04:25:21 - 00:04:27:19\nAnd he said, “Come on, bring it.”\n\n00:04:27:19 - 00:04:29:20\nSo that's how I started.\n\n00:04:29:20 - 00:04:31:06\nI would go down there,\n\n00:04:31:06 - 00:04:34:18\nI'd be down here about 3:30 every morning,\n\n00:04:34:20 - 00:04:39:00\nget all my veggies,\rand these guys saved me really good ones.\n\n00:04:39:00 - 00:04:41:21\nThey would give me the best of the best.\r\n\n00:04:41:21 - 00:04:42:10\nDuring the week\n\n00:04:42:10 - 00:04:43:01\nI would\n\n00:04:43:01 - 00:04:45:20\nI had Venice and Santa Monica\n\n00:04:45:20 - 00:04:48:05\nand I had an ahooga horn\n\n00:04:48:05 - 00:04:51:11\nand I would,\ryou know, do my ahooga, people come out.\n\n00:04:51:11 - 00:04:54:07\nAnd I got to the point\rthat I had customers\n\n00:04:54:07 - 00:04:58:04\nthat would leave me blank checks\rand a list of what they wanted.\n\n00:04:58:04 - 00:05:01:04\nI would go down Rose\n\n00:05:01:06 - 00:05:02:04\nand then I’d go up\n\n00:05:02:04 - 00:05:06:03\nup and down like, the Pacific, down\n\n00:05:06:05 - 00:05:11:16\nDudley and up and down the streets\rall the way to Westminster\n\n00:05:11:16 - 00:05:15:20\nand, and then I would go up Abbot Kinney.\n\n00:05:15:20 - 00:05:17:08\nRose was a big one.\n\n00:05:17:08 - 00:05:20:11\nI mean, Rose gave me a lot of business,\r\n\n00:05:20:11 - 00:05:24:08\nYou know Rose, then I'd go up the,\ryou know, up to Main Street\n\n00:05:24:08 - 00:05:28:08\nand then the third and the fourth and,\ryou know, all the way up.\n\n00:05:28:08 - 00:05:31:08\nSo it was really an experience.\n\n00:05:31:08 - 00:05:32:16\nIt was wonderful.\n\n00:05:32:16 - 00:05:36:04\nI knew all these artists\rand none of them had money,\n\n00:05:36:04 - 00:05:40:02\nso we ate whatever I had left.\n\n00:05:40:02 - 00:05:43:05\nSome nights we'd have corn for dinner,\rsome nights\n\n00:05:43:05 - 00:05:47:02\nwe'd have artichokes for dinner,\rsome nights we'd have potatoes,\n\n00:05:47:02 - 00:05:52:21\nsome nights we’d have tomatoes,\rbut I would feed all the Venice artists.\n\n00:05:52:21 - 00:05:55:21\nJudy Baca was one of them, Donna Deitch,\n\n00:05:55:21 - 00:05:57:13\nChristina Schlesinger and\n\n00:05:57:13 - 00:06:01:18\nKatherine Brahm, who's my good buddy.\rAnd she was, uh,\n\n00:06:01:18 - 00:06:03:16\nshe was a director of The Artwalk.\n\n00:06:03:16 - 00:06:07:16\nAnd a lot of them. Yeah. A lot of them became\n\n00:06:07:17 - 00:06:09:03\nout there as artists.\n\n00:06:09:03 - 00:06:12:15\nWe fed ‘em all, had fun with them all,\n\n00:06:12:15 - 00:06:16:06\ndid drugs with them all, mostly pot.\n\n00:06:16:06 - 00:06:20:08\nAnd it was just, you know,\rit was like a commune only\n\n00:06:20:08 - 00:06:24:04\nwe had our own places\rand everybody cared about each other.\n\n00:06:24:04 - 00:06:27:18\nI mean, you, is this person sick?\n\n00:06:27:18 - 00:06:31:04\nOkay, I'll make some soup, bring it over.\n\n00:06:31:04 - 00:06:33:02\nWe just, and then we'd have dinners\n\n00:06:33:02 - 00:06:34:11\neverybody would bring something.\n\n00:06:34:11 - 00:06:40:04\nIt was, it was really like a commune\rand really a lot of love.\n\n00:06:40:06 - 00:06:42:05\nLots of love.\n\n00:06:42:05 - 00:06:45:12\nMoe’s Greens and Things ended around\n\n00:06:45:12 - 00:06:47:11\nend of  ‘74\n\n00:06:47:11 - 00:06:50:13\nand then I started doing house\rpainting with my partner,\n\n00:06:50:13 - 00:06:53:13\nand we did that for some time.\n\n00:06:53:13 - 00:06:58:23\nYou know, close to three, four years,\rand she was also an artist.\n\n00:06:58:23 - 00:07:00:04\nSo we did murals.\n\n00:07:00:04 - 00:07:02:20\nI mean, I was like paint by the numbers,\n\n00:07:02:20 - 00:07:04:18\nshe would just tell me where\rto fill in things.\n\n00:07:04:18 - 00:07:06:09\nI was not the artist.\n\n00:07:06:09 - 00:07:09:10\n“Well, in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s \rthere was a lot of great music\n\n00:07:09:10 - 00:07:10:12\nhappening down here,\n\n00:07:10:12 - 00:07:15:04\nand then, you know, poets and\rall those different interesting people.\n\n00:07:15:04 - 00:07:16:23\nDid you get to partake in any of that?”\n\n00:07:16:23 - 00:07:20:05\nWell, I was thinking about this on Abbot Kinney,\n\n00:07:20:05 - 00:07:22:19\nthere was, uh, there were, I think, two places\n\n00:07:22:19 - 00:07:28:04\nthere was the Merchants of Venice,\rwhich was, you know, I mean, a store.\n\n00:07:28:04 - 00:07:30:06\nIt was a mishmash of everything.\n\n00:07:30:06 - 00:07:35:17\nAnd then there was a Comeback\rInn, which was a music venue.\n\n00:07:35:17 - 00:07:38:05\nAnd that was awesome.\n\n00:07:38:05 - 00:07:39:21\nI mean, I think you would go in,\n\n00:07:39:21 - 00:07:41:21\nI'm not even sure if they charged you.\n\n00:07:41:21 - 00:07:44:07\nI mean, if they did, it was a couple bucks. \n\n00:07:44:07 - 00:07:49:07\nAnd uh, so you would go there \rand you could order maybe,\n\n00:07:49:07 - 00:07:53:08\nyou know, bread and cheese\rand have a beer or have a wine.\n\n00:07:53:08 - 00:07:56:16\nAnd that was an amazing little place.\n\n00:07:56:16 - 00:07:58:16\nJanis Joplin, I think, appeared there.\n\n00:07:58:16 - 00:08:01:23\nYes, I saw her a couple of times. Wow.\n\n00:08:01:23 - 00:08:03:00\nWell, I'll tell you one thing.\n\n00:08:03:00 - 00:08:04:22\nI'm really happy I was born,\n\n00:08:04:22 - 00:08:09:06\nI mean, perfect, came out here in ‘65,\rfull on hippie.\n\n00:08:09:06 - 00:08:12:02\nI mean, it was, I just jumped in and said,\n\n00:08:12:02 - 00:08:15:06\n“This is, this is living, this is the best.”\n\n00:08:15:06 - 00:08:17:15\nAnd of course, Jim Morrison lived here.\n\n00:08:17:15 - 00:08:20:18\nI mean, I actually, he actually\n\n00:08:20:18 - 00:08:24:06\nwhen I lived in Laurel Canyon, I, \rhe didn't live too far from me\n\n00:08:24:06 - 00:08:28:03\nAnd I had a little escapade with Jim Morrison.\n\n00:08:28:03 - 00:08:30:04\nSo there is my claim,\n\n00:08:30:04 - 00:08:32:01\n15 minutes of fame.\n\n00:08:32:01 - 00:08:33:18\n“Care to expand upon that?”\n\n00:08:33:18 - 00:08:37:10\nWell, yes, I'm coming out of a restaurant\rwith my buddy\n\n00:08:37:10 - 00:08:42:00\nand he's coming out with his buddies,\rand they were all stoned.\n\n00:08:42:00 - 00:08:46:06\nAnd he said,\r“Hey, there's a party, you know?”\n\n00:08:46:06 - 00:08:48:23\nAnd I knew exactly where,\rI was up on Laurel Canyon.\n\n00:08:48:23 - 00:08:50:13\nAnd he said, “You want to come?”\n\n00:08:50:13 - 00:08:52:13\nAnd I thought, Hello!\n\n00:08:52:13 - 00:08:54:20\nYes, yes, I will.\n\n00:08:54:20 - 00:08:58:01\nAnd my friend said, “No, I don't think so.”\n\n00:08:58:03 - 00:09:00:14\nI said, “Okay, I'm going.”\rIt was pretty great.\n\n00:09:00:14 - 00:09:06:21\nI actually I got a little feel,\rfeel up on the boobs from Jim.
