00:00:53:07\nfrom extended family, not just my mother.\rMy grandmother, really\n\n00:00:53:07 - 00:00:57:22\nI saw her as the head of the family\rmore than I saw my mother.\n\n00:00:57:22 - 00:01:01:16\nAnd I would...if I get in trouble,\rI'll go tell on my mother.\n\n00:01:01:16 - 00:01:05:06\nI go tell my grandmother\rbefore my mother did.\n\n00:01:05:08 - 00:01:07:18\nSo, um...\n\n00:01:07:18 - 00:01:12:12\nYeah, so, it was, um, that, um...\n\n00:01:12:12 - 00:01:14:05\nwas a security blanket.\n\n00:01:14:05 - 00:01:17:22\nAnd most of the families\rwe came from the Great Migration.\n\n00:01:17:22 - 00:01:20:17\nMost of the Black\rpeople came from the South,\n\n00:01:20:17 - 00:01:25:20\nand there was a lot of extended families\rand what we found out later,\n\n00:01:25:20 - 00:01:29:02\nmy grandparents\rand my friends grandparents and mothers\n\n00:01:29:02 - 00:01:33:03\nand fathers,\rthey all knew each other from back South.\n\n00:01:33:03 - 00:01:36:04\nSo, and we didn't know\rwe were a part of history.\n\n00:01:36:04 - 00:01:39:22\nYou know, we just knew, oh, my mother came\rfrom the South, and your mother did, too.\n\n00:01:39:22 - 00:01:41:14\nAnd your father did.\n\n00:01:41:14 - 00:01:45:17\nBut we didn’t know this is a\rnational thing in America, \n\n00:01:45:17 - 00:01:49:16\none of the greatest migrations\rin human history unspurred by war.\n\n00:01:49:16 - 00:01:54:19\nSo, and we were part in that,\rand we landed in this little spot\n\n00:01:54:19 - 00:01:59:02\nthey called Oakwood area, \rformerly Ghost Town,\n\n00:01:59:02 - 00:02:00:09\ncause we were\n\n00:02:00:09 - 00:02:04:05\nprohibited\rfrom living anywhere else in Venice.\n\n00:02:04:05 - 00:02:08:20\nSo that was the only place we could live\rbecause of redlining.\n\n00:02:08:20 - 00:02:12:05\nUh, literally where you see the \rrailroad tracks are,\n\n00:02:12:05 - 00:02:14:19\nthat's, that was the one dividing line.\n\n00:02:14:19 - 00:02:20:23\nWe were on the other side of the tracks\rand we couldn't live\n\n00:02:20:23 - 00:02:25:07\nwest of Abbot Kinney, which was Washington at the time.\n\n00:02:25:07 - 00:02:28:09\nAnd the other border was Lincoln\n\n00:02:28:09 - 00:02:30:04\nand Rose and California.\n\n00:02:30:04 - 00:02:32:12\nSo that's the spot we landed in,\n\n00:02:32:12 - 00:02:35:23\nsome lived in Santa Monica\runtil they built the freeway\n\n00:02:35:23 - 00:02:39:15\nand then some people came\rto Venice, others\n\n00:02:39:15 - 00:02:41:13\nspread it out.\n\n00:02:41:13 - 00:02:46:13\nUm, but um, the culture that I grew up in,\n\n00:02:46:13 - 00:02:50:19\nit was it was Black, but\n\n00:02:50:19 - 00:02:54:13\nit was a ghetto by the, by the ocean.\n\n00:02:54:13 - 00:02:58:11\nAnd so Westminster,\rwent to school there and we mingled.\n\n00:02:58:11 - 00:03:02:05\nIt was mostly, I think, it seems like Mexican, \rbut some white kids.\n\n00:03:02:05 - 00:03:05:00\nSo as kids\n\n00:03:05:00 - 00:03:06:13\nin the beach,\n\n00:03:06:13 - 00:03:09:23\nwe kind of mingled with everyone\rbut our parents\n\n00:03:09:23 - 00:03:13:22\nhad a very different experience\rthan we did growing up.\n\n00:03:13:22 - 00:03:18:00\nSo they were raising us\n\n00:03:18:00 - 00:03:21:07\naccording, a lot of times\rto a way they were raised,\n\n00:03:21:07 - 00:03:24:07\nwhich they had no idea\n\n00:03:24:07 - 00:03:27:08\nhow that was going to turn out here.\rAnd, uh,\n\n00:03:27:08 - 00:03:31:16\nand when I look back,\ryou know, a lot of us had\n\n00:03:31:16 - 00:03:33:19\ncountry girls raising hood boys.\n\n00:03:33:19 - 00:03:37:04\nAnd it, it you know,\rthey just didn't know how to do it.\n\n00:03:38:19 - 00:03:41:01\n“And so, in getting down there\n\n00:03:41:01 - 00:03:43:04\n what was\n\n00:03:43:04 - 00:03:44:23\nyour childhood itself like?\n\n00:03:44:23 - 00:03:45:15\nLike did you\n\n00:03:45:15 - 00:03:47:08\ndid you mix with all the kids\rin the other parts of Venice?\n\n00:03:47:08 - 00:03:49:16\nWere back and forth at the beach?\rWhat were the things happening?”\n\n00:03:49:16 - 00:03:52:23\nYeah, I went to the beach, canals.\n\n00:03:52:23 - 00:03:56:11\nWe were told not to\rgo canals. We did it anyway.\n\n00:03:56:11 - 00:03:59:07\nThey were afraid of white people,\rwhat they would do to us\n\n00:03:59:07 - 00:04:01:10\nif we were caught.\n\n00:04:01:10 - 00:04:04:00\nSo we mingled and we just didn't\n\n00:04:04:00 - 00:04:07:05\ntell our parents because we're like, okay,\rthey won't understand.\n\n00:04:07:05 - 00:04:10:22\nBut as far as for us,\rit was for some of us it was cool.\n\n00:04:10:22 - 00:04:13:20\nSome actually did listen to the parents\rand didn't mingle.\n\n00:04:14:09 - 00:04:16:09\nPlaying sports, you know, played\n\n00:04:16:09 - 00:04:19:22\nfootball and football, um...\n\n00:04:19:22 - 00:04:22:06\na lot of us mingled\n\n00:04:22:06 - 00:04:24:22\nMexican, Asian, White.\n\n00:04:24:22 - 00:04:28:09\nSo some of those kids\rthat you didn’t go to elementary school with,\n\n00:04:28:09 - 00:04:32:11\nyou met them on the football team\rand then later on in junior high school,\n\n00:04:32:11 - 00:04:36:06\nah, you were already buddies\reven though they lived in\n\n00:04:36:06 - 00:04:38:11\nslightly different neighborhood.\n\n00:04:38:11 - 00:04:43:00\nSo for me, I believe that helped me, um...\n\n00:04:43:00 - 00:04:44:18\naccept more people.\n\n00:04:44:18 - 00:04:49:19\nBecause you were like,\rokay, they're white and they're different.\n\n00:04:49:19 - 00:04:52:03\nAt least you were told \rthat from your parents,\n\n00:04:52:03 - 00:04:55:09\nyour step parents, whatever,\rthey're Mexican, they're different.\n\n00:04:55:09 - 00:04:56:06\nAnd as a child\n\n00:04:56:06 - 00:05:00:07\nand you really don't notice a difference\rbecause you're not that different.\n\n00:05:00:07 - 00:05:04:20\nSo you're trying to\rfigure it out, you know.  And uh...\n\n00:05:04:20 - 00:05:07:17\nby the time you're figuring out\rthe differences,\n\n00:05:07:17 - 00:05:10:17\nyou're actually acting different\rbecause you've been told that.\n\n00:05:10:17 - 00:05:15:03\nSo you get in junior high and you’re \rwith your click and they're with their click.\n\n00:05:15:03 - 00:05:19:09\nBut, uh, for me, once you bond with someone,\rparticularly early on,\n\n00:05:19:09 - 00:05:23:06\nyou know, my best friend,\relementary school for first or second\n\n00:05:23:06 - 00:05:26:11\ngrade was a Mexican kid, Carlos\runtil he moved away.\n\n00:05:26:11 - 00:05:31:12\nSo, once you have this early experience of\rbonding with people, you can’t look at them\n\n00:05:31:12 - 00:05:35:14\ndifferently just because \ryou're older now, you know, so\n\n00:05:35:14 - 00:05:39:04\nthat, that helped me, but, um...\n\n00:05:39:04 - 00:05:41:16\nyou definitely feel like\n\n00:05:41:16 - 00:05:44:02\nthings are different from you at an early age.\n\n00:05:44:02 - 00:05:46:11\nYou know, I think the first thing I knew,\n\n00:05:46:11 - 00:05:50:06\nI was a boy and the second thing\rI knew I was a Black boy specifically.\n\n00:05:50:06 - 00:05:53:06\nAnd that was different than any other boy.\n\n00:05:53:06 - 00:05:56:06\nAnd so that awareness was early on.\n\n00:05:56:09 - 00:05:58:07\nThe first time I was called nigger,\n\n00:05:58:07 - 00:06:01:00\nit was me and other kids\rand it was by cops.  We were seven.\n\n00:06:01:00 - 00:06:01:22\nI was seven years old.\n\n00:06:01:22 - 00:06:04:00\nThey were around the same age\rand we were in the alley. \n\n00:06:04:00 - 00:06:06:16\n They said, “You little niggers, get out the alley”\n\n00:06:06:16 - 00:06:08:14\nand then\n\n00:06:08:14 - 00:06:13:08\nI remember all my experience with cops\reven early on were kind of negative.\n\n00:06:13:08 - 00:06:17:22\nAnd so early on, as a child,\ryou know, from knowing adults\n\n00:06:17:22 - 00:06:22:01\nbut from person like, hey,\rthese dudes aren't here for me.\n\n00:06:22:01 - 00:06:25:05\nThey're here to get me if, if anything.\n\n00:06:25:07 - 00:06:28:22\nSo early on I felt like, you know,\rthere was no downplay\n\n00:06:28:22 - 00:06:30:13\nit was, it was kind of innocent.\n\n00:06:30:13 - 00:06:35:19\nAnd, you know, we weren’t hearing\rpeople getting killed, but, uh...\n\n00:06:35:19 - 00:06:37:09\nit was a lot of violence.\n\n00:06:37:09 - 00:06:40:17\nAnd I don't know how violent it was\runtil I grew up and looked back and went,\n\n00:06:40:17 - 00:06:44:04\nwow, this was...\rYou know, Westminster and Broadway\n\n00:06:44:04 - 00:06:46:06\nyou always had a king of the school.\n\n00:06:46:06 - 00:06:49:11\nAnd that's whoever was the best fighter.\n\n00:06:49:13 - 00:06:54:13\nAnd, uh, so that kind of mentality...uh...\n\n00:06:54:13 - 00:06:58:23\nwas part of the psychology\rof us growing, growing up.\n\n00:06:59:17 - 00:07:00:22\n“Like when you mentioned\n\n00:07:00:22 - 00:07:04:15\nthe kind of race wars that took place\rearly ‘90’s, the late ‘80’s,\n\n00:07:04:15 - 00:07:07:09\nearly ‘90’s, was it, do you think\n\n00:07:07:09 - 00:07:10:21\nthat part of the cultural shift\rof what became the gentrification era\n\n00:07:10:21 - 00:07:13:21\nor what do you think was kinda \rthe cause of that after all those years?”\n\n00:07:13:21 - 00:07:16:13\nNo. Reagan When he was governor,\rhe was in office,\n\n00:07:16:13 - 00:07:19:10\nhe didn't want the government apartments to come here.\n\n00:07:19:10 - 00:07:22:12\nSo they had plans, you know, um...\n\n00:07:22:20 - 00:07:25:01\nyou know, it was uh...\n\n00:07:25:01 - 00:07:26:17\nthe free colleges, the state colleges\n\n00:07:26:17 - 00:07:28:07\nthey had in California,\n\n00:07:28:07 - 00:07:30:23\nyou know, and got everybody from the east \rand everybody coming down here.\n\n00:07:30:23 - 00:07:35:14\nSo, if you in the real estate,\ryou saw the migration towards California,\n\n00:07:35:14 - 00:07:39:14\nthe weather, and you knew\rpeople come from cold places. The climate,\n\n00:07:39:14 - 00:07:43:15\ncold, you know, that's, you know,\rVenice was really undeveloped and cheap.\n\n00:07:43:15 - 00:07:45:15\nSo it was\n\n00:07:45:17 - 00:07:47:16\nthey had, people had designs on it\n\n00:07:47:16 - 00:07:51:16\nwho was into land and development\rway back in the seventies.\n\n00:07:51:16 - 00:07:56:03\nAnd Reagan really didn't even want\rthe government apartments to come here.\n\n00:07:56:03 - 00:07:59:14\nMr. Castille, he was into real estate,\rhe was my football coach\n\n00:07:59:14 - 00:08:03:16\nwhen I played Pop Warner.\rHe fought with Reagan \n\n00:08:03:16 - 00:08:07:04\nto get those government apartments\n\n00:08:07:04 - 00:08:11:17\nhere, which were projects,\rand unlike other projects\n\n00:08:11:17 - 00:08:13:04\nthey didn’t want them clumped together.\n\n00:08:13:04 - 00:08:15:06\nThey didn't want them \rto look all clumped together.\n\n00:08:15:06 - 00:08:18:20\nThat's why they were spaced apart like that.\r\n\n00:08:18:20 - 00:08:22:07\nUmm... umm...\n\n00:08:22:17 - 00:08:25:17\nSo, it was a slow process.\n\n00:08:25:17 - 00:08:29:15\nWhat the wars did is accelerate\rthe gentrification.\n\n00:08:29:15 - 00:08:34:16\nAnd um, and so people,\ryou know, once their kid got killed\n\n00:08:34:16 - 00:08:37:17\nin the street, you know, you know,\rthey'll sell the house for cheap.\n\n00:08:37:17 - 00:08:38:23\nThey just want to get out of the neighborhood.\n\n00:08:38:23 - 00:08:41:12\nThey couldn't\rdrive down that street anymore.\n\n00:08:41:12 - 00:08:44:03\nSo that was\n\n00:08:44:03 - 00:08:47:00\na celebration point, that’s all.\n\n00:08:47:00 - 00:08:52:05\nBut the plans were way,\rplans were in, were already\n\n00:08:52:05 - 00:08:53:18\nin the works.\n\n00:08:53:18 - 00:08:56:06\n“When did you first start\rseeing a cultural shift\n\n00:08:56:06 - 00:08:59:13\nout of kind of what that area was\rin Venice in general?\n\n00:08:59:13 - 00:09:00:21\nAnd what kind of changes\n\n00:09:00:21 - 00:09:04:13\nhave you seen in the time since\rthose shifts had started taking place?”\n\n00:09:04:13 - 00:09:07:21\nWell, I think the cultural shift\ris really Americana.\n\n00:09:07:21 - 00:09:11:12\nGentrification was Americana\rjust like the Great Migration.\n\n00:09:11:12 - 00:09:17:04\nSo, um, I just, witness\rcultural shift from Venice,\n\n00:09:17:04 - 00:09:19:19\nbut it was going on in America.\n\n00:09:19:19 - 00:09:22:03\nYou know, um...\n\n00:09:22:09 - 00:09:26:10\nya, so, I guess had we stayed here,\n\n00:09:26:10 - 00:09:29:16\nthe Black community neighborhood, \rI don't think\n\n00:09:29:16 - 00:09:31:07\nmaybe some things\rwould have been the same.\n\n00:09:31:07 - 00:09:34:05\nBut because of technology\ra lot of things were gonna change.\n\n00:09:34:05 - 00:09:37:09\nPeople couldn’t have been\ron the street slinging, anymore.\n\n00:09:37:09 - 00:09:40:02\nSo that would have changed anyway. \n\n00:09:40:10 - 00:09:42:08\nSo... uh...\n\n00:09:42:08 - 00:09:43:18\nthe cultural thing,\n\n00:09:43:18 - 00:09:46:10\ncultures been celebrated in Americana.\n\n00:09:46:10 - 00:09:48:10\nYou know, we were lucky.\n\n00:09:48:10 - 00:09:52:16\nWe grew up in a generation\rwhere we saw pretty much the advent\n\n00:09:52:16 - 00:09:56:22\nof the colored TV, all these DVDs,\n\n00:09:56:22 - 00:09:58:08\nall this stuff happened.\n\n00:09:58:08 - 00:10:03:08\nIt was like a boom, but we can remember\rwhen you can watch a show.\n\n00:10:03:08 - 00:10:08:00\nIf you wanted to see it again, you had to\rwait until next time it came on.\n\n00:10:08:00 - 00:10:09:21\nMight have been six months from now.\n\n00:10:09:21 - 00:10:14:02\nMight've been next year, you know,\rbut you couldn't see it.\n\n00:10:14:02 - 00:10:16:20\nSo, yeah, I just watched it from here.\n\n00:10:16:20 - 00:10:18:22\nAnd so, umm...\n\n00:10:18:22 - 00:10:20:16\nI think we're going somewhere\n\n00:10:20:16 - 00:10:24:23\nand we don't know the ramifications of it\ryet because it's all new.\n\n00:10:24:23 - 00:10:27:10\nBut, um...I think it is\n\n00:10:27:10 - 00:10:30:16\nhuman to want to know your neighbor,\n\n00:10:30:16 - 00:10:34:13\nyou know, and to want to feel comfortable\rnext to the people you live.\n\n00:10:34:13 - 00:10:36:04\nThat's not Venice anymore.\n\n00:10:36:04 - 00:10:39:19\nAnd I don't think that's\ra lot of neighborhoods in America anymore.\n\n00:10:39:19 - 00:10:43:07\nWell, you know what, um,\rAmerica's still deadly.\n\n00:10:43:07 - 00:10:47:08\nYou know,\rif you're Black, particularly Black male.\n\n00:10:47:08 - 00:10:50:19\nBut, uh,...
