My name is Mark Rosenberg.\n\n00:00:07:06 - 00:00:12:09\nI was born in Santa Monica,\rCalifornia, in 1950.\n\n00:00:12:15 - 00:00:16:22\nThen I moved to Venice in 1967\n\n00:00:17:00 - 00:00:19:16\nto a house that's actually still there.\n\n00:00:19:16 - 00:00:23:22\nAnd it's a great old Venice house\rat 257 Windward Avenue,\n\n00:00:23:22 - 00:00:26:22\nright on the corner of Windward\rand Riviera.\n\n00:00:26:22 - 00:00:30:11\nIt's a three bedroom house, and there was\rsix of us hippies living there.\n\n00:00:30:13 - 00:00:32:11\nAnd it was a party house.\n\n00:00:32:11 - 00:00:37:06\nI mean, we were buying lids\revery night and\n\n00:00:37:08 - 00:00:39:05\nit was fun times\n\n00:00:39:05 - 00:00:43:11\nand after that I moved in to the canals\n\n00:00:43:13 - 00:00:47:19\nin, about two years later, about 1970.\n\n00:00:47:21 - 00:00:52:20\nBut all that time, I mean, as a kid\rgrowing up, before I moved to Venice,\n\n00:00:52:20 - 00:00:58:04\nI was riding the trams, you know, to POP.\rWas a great place to grow up.\n\n00:00:58:05 - 00:00:59:23\nSo I was a beach kid.\n\n00:00:59:23 - 00:01:02:09\nI'd love to talk about my business.\n\n00:01:02:09 - 00:01:04:11\nIt was actually my brother's business,\n\n00:01:04:11 - 00:01:06:00\nJeff Rosenberg.\n\n00:01:06:00 - 00:01:09:21\nI was living at 5th and Ocean Park\n\n00:01:09:23 - 00:01:12:15\naround ‘75, ’76.\n\n00:01:12:15 - 00:01:14:03\nWe weren't really close.\n\n00:01:14:03 - 00:01:17:15\nWe didn't, like,\rhang around the same groups of people.\n\n00:01:17:17 - 00:01:22:20\nHe's a couple of years younger,\rand he was like, the popular kid in school.\n\n00:01:22:21 - 00:01:25:19\nWhereas I was kind of an outsider.\n\n00:01:25:19 - 00:01:30:12\nand, but anyhow, he came up over to the house one day\n\n00:01:30:14 - 00:01:33:07\nand he, he was telling me about\n\n00:01:33:07 - 00:01:38:06\nhe and a couple of his friends\rwould go roller skating on Venice Beach.\n\n00:01:38:08 - 00:01:43:01\nAnd Jeff actually roller skated\rand used them for transportation.\n\n00:01:43:01 - 00:01:46:19\nHe would skate to college at\rSanta Monica College,\n\n00:01:46:19 - 00:01:52:00\nand the reaction that he and\rhis friends would get gave him the idea\n\n00:01:52:02 - 00:01:56:15\nof renting roller skates at Venice Beach.\n\n00:01:56:17 - 00:02:01:09\nAnd they had adapted urethane wheels,\rwhich were new at the time.\n\n00:02:01:09 - 00:02:04:18\nIt was a new evolution of the\rof the wheels\n\n00:02:04:18 - 00:02:09:09\nthat was actually made for skateboards\rand it made roller skating just wonderful.\n\n00:02:09:11 - 00:02:12:11\nOne afternoon he drops by the house\n\n00:02:12:15 - 00:02:16:05\nand says, I've got this...\n\n00:02:16:07 - 00:02:20:14\nI'm going to want to start a business\rof renting roller skates.\n\n00:02:20:14 - 00:02:24:14\nAnd I didn't know that he had been roller\rskating at the time, but he told me\n\n00:02:24:14 - 00:02:29:03\nwhat was going on and I wasn't like, oh yeah,\rthat sounds great.\n\n00:02:29:03 - 00:02:32:12\nI was very lackadaisical about the idea.\n\n00:02:32:12 - 00:02:36:09\nI didn't, I didn't really,\n\n00:02:36:11 - 00:02:38:19\nI wasn't like really excited about it.\n\n00:02:38:19 - 00:02:40:12\nBut he says, I don't know what to name it.\n\n00:02:40:12 - 00:02:44:22\nAnd he was telling me that he had this,\ryou know, high rollers or\n\n00:02:45:00 - 00:02:49:10\nwing skates or, you know, whatever\rhe had this all these names\n\n00:02:49:10 - 00:02:52:19\nthat he was considering.  You know,\rhe said nothing really clicked for him.\n\n00:02:52:19 - 00:02:55:08\nI said, “Hey,” I said, “How about Cheapskates?”\n\n00:02:55:08 - 00:02:57:17\nAnd pretty much the rest is history.\n\n00:02:57:17 - 00:03:01:01\nI get chills when I just talk about that.\n\n00:03:01:03 - 00:03:06:18\nIn the beginning of the roller skate,\rthe rebirth of roller skating,\n\n00:03:06:18 - 00:03:10:12\nwhich occurred in Venice in 1976,\n\n00:03:10:14 - 00:03:13:05\nJeff had bought a small truck\n\n00:03:13:05 - 00:03:17:02\nand 25 pair of roller skates,\rand at the time there were ball\n\n00:03:17:02 - 00:03:21:11\nbearings roller skates,\rand we backed the truck up,\n\n00:03:21:11 - 00:03:24:07\nwe had little contracts,\rprinted out liabilities.\n\n00:03:24:07 - 00:03:28:09\nAnd, you know, you give me your driver's\rlicense and you take the roller skates.\n\n00:03:28:11 - 00:03:34:19\nSo he put me on a pair of skates,\rand I was down there from day one\n\n00:03:34:20 - 00:03:39:11\nmorning till close\n\n00:03:39:13 - 00:03:42:12\ntrying to get people to roller skate.\n\n00:03:42:12 - 00:03:46:10\nWe first started, people didn't flock\n\n00:03:46:12 - 00:03:51:11\nto line up and rent roller skates\rlike they did in\n\n00:03:51:13 - 00:03:55:17\nin the short amount of time\rafter we'd been established.\n\n00:03:55:18 - 00:03:58:00\nSo I was there\n\n00:03:58:00 - 00:04:01:16\non my skates and people would gas on it,\ryou know, they'd go, “Oh, how cool.”\n\n00:04:01:16 - 00:04:06:09\nAnd I'll go, “Well,” you know, I said, “Well, do you,\n\n00:04:06:11 - 00:04:07:16\nhave you, ever roller skated?”\n\n00:04:07:16 - 00:04:08:18\nAnd they said, “Oh, yeah.”\n\n00:04:08:18 - 00:04:12:09\nI said, “Well, you know, give it a try,”\ryou know, I said,\n\n00:04:12:11 - 00:04:16:10\n“Give me your driver's license,\rtake the skates for 15 minutes,\n\n00:04:16:12 - 00:04:18:19\nif you don't like it,\rbring the skates back.”\n\n00:04:18:19 - 00:04:21:15\nAnd nobody ever brought the skates back.\n\n00:04:21:15 - 00:04:25:16\nEverybody that I did\rthat little promotional deal with\n\n00:04:25:18 - 00:04:31:00\nwent on and continued\rand it kind of took off from there.\n\n00:04:31:02 - 00:04:33:14\nI had printed up signs,\n\n00:04:33:14 - 00:04:37:14\nno mileage charge, no speed limit,\n\n00:04:37:19 - 00:04:41:10\nand I, like propped him up\ragainst the bench on the ocean front walk.\n\n00:04:41:15 - 00:04:43:07\nThat was kind of the beginning.\n\n00:04:43:07 - 00:04:47:07\nIt didn't, if I had just sat there,\ryou know, reading a book\n\n00:04:47:09 - 00:04:50:09\nand said, “Hey, rent rollerskates”\rit never would have gone anywhere.\n\n00:04:50:14 - 00:04:52:21\nYou know,\rpeople would have just kept walking by.\n\n00:04:52:21 - 00:04:53:19\nBut I pushed it,\n\n00:04:53:19 - 00:04:57:07\nI promoted it, and I was having fun\rand they could tell I was having fun.\n\n00:04:57:09 - 00:05:00:22\nAnd on the weekends when it, \rwhen Jeff and, you know, all his friends\n\n00:05:00:22 - 00:05:03:22\nwould come down\rand our other brother Carey,\n\n00:05:04:00 - 00:05:06:13\nyou could see that\reverybody was just having a good time.\n\n00:05:06:13 - 00:05:10:00\nVenice was a quaint beach community,\rat the time.\n\n00:05:10:02 - 00:05:15:02\nYou know, it was it wasn't\rthe tourist attraction that it is today.\n\n00:05:15:04 - 00:05:17:20\nAnd I had\n\n00:05:17:20 - 00:05:20:15\nwe had gotten so much publicity,\n\n00:05:20:15 - 00:05:24:08\nyou know, after a short period of time\n\n00:05:24:10 - 00:05:28:14\nand like, within a couple of months,\rwe were able to rent a storefront.\n\n00:05:28:16 - 00:05:31:18\nAnd after that, we had people\rlined up across the boardwalk.\n\n00:05:31:18 - 00:05:34:00\nAll time, we were open year round.\n\n00:05:34:00 - 00:05:37:08\nIt wasn't a seasonal visit\rto Venice anymore.\n\n00:05:37:13 - 00:05:39:21\nIt was a year round recreation.\n\n00:05:39:21 - 00:05:41:22\nWe were like kings of the boardwalk back then.\n\n00:05:41:22 - 00:05:45:21\nIt was, it was, people that were there back then,\n\n00:05:45:23 - 00:05:49:01\nanybody that was there, everybody\rthat was there, described\n\n00:05:49:01 - 00:05:53:06\nthe ‘70’s as the best times in Venice.\n\n00:05:53:08 - 00:05:55:13\nI guess the the cultural difference,\n\n00:05:55:13 - 00:06:01:12\nthe difference between Venice and even other\n\n00:06:01:14 - 00:06:04:18\nsurrounding communities or communities\rjust to the north or\n\n00:06:04:18 - 00:06:10:20\nto the south is Venice was\n\n00:06:10:22 - 00:06:13:22\nmore liberal.\n\n00:06:14:03 - 00:06:16:00\nIt was\n\n00:06:16:00 - 00:06:18:12\nbohemian style.
