00:00:07:12\n \rMy name is Joan Huff,\n\n00:00:07:12 - 00:00:12:09\nand my birthday is February 12, 1931.\n\n00:00:12:09 - 00:00:14:20\n  I'm from the Tabor family.\n\n00:00:14:20 - 00:00:19:08\nI am the niece of Irving Tabor.\n\n00:00:19:08 - 00:00:22:10\nMy family came here in 1910.\n\n00:00:22:10 - 00:00:27:00\nIrving and his family followed soon after.\n\n00:00:27:00 - 00:00:32:00\nMy Uncle Irving,\rhe was cleaning up on the pier.\n\n00:00:32:00 - 00:00:35:07\nAnd so Abbot \rKinney said he needed a chauffeur.\n\n00:00:35:07 - 00:00:40:13\nAnd so my uncle said he knew how to drive,\rbut he didn't know how to drive.\n\n00:00:40:13 - 00:00:44:03\nI think they've heard that story before\rand they had to teach him\n\n00:00:44:03 - 00:00:47:16\nhow to drive with work in one day\rso that he could drive\n\n00:00:47:16 - 00:00:50:14\nAbbot Kinney around.\n\n00:00:50:14 - 00:00:53:02\nAnd that's\rwhen they started their relationship.\n\n00:00:53:02 - 00:00:57:17\nAnd he was an attendant or,\n\n00:00:57:17 - 00:00:58:11\nyou know,\n\n00:00:58:11 - 00:01:03:05\nfor Abbot Kinney, his chauffeur\ran attendant, and he lived in the home with them.\n\n00:01:03:05 - 00:01:06:18\nThey were like best friends,\ryou know, and he took them\n\n00:01:06:18 - 00:01:08:10\nhe took him every place.\n\n00:01:08:10 - 00:01:10:21\nAbbot Kinney was\n\n00:01:10:21 - 00:01:12:14\nquite an environmentalist.\n\n00:01:12:14 - 00:01:16:10\nand he would go every place, you know, he\n\n00:01:16:10 - 00:01:18:15\nand he would take Irving with him.\n\n00:01:18:15 - 00:01:21:12\nAnd we are cousins to the Reeses.\n\n00:01:21:12 - 00:01:22:14\nArthur Reese.\n\n00:01:22:14 - 00:01:26:09\nHe was connected to Abbot Kinney\rbecause he was his decorator.\n\n00:01:26:09 - 00:01:29:05\nThey had the annual Mardi Gras parade\n\n00:01:29:05 - 00:01:33:05\nand they had the paper mache \rwhich Arthur Reese made.\n\n00:01:33:05 - 00:01:38:07\nAnd the big heads which, you know,\rboys would carry on their shoulders.\n\n00:01:38:07 - 00:01:42:15\nAnd I can remember\rbecause I dressed like a gypsy.\n\n00:01:42:15 - 00:01:46:20\nMy I had this gypsy costume,\rwhich I adored.\n\n00:01:46:20 - 00:01:50:10\nMy memory is of 708 Vernon\n\n00:01:50:10 - 00:01:55:09\nand we were, you know, seven blocks\roff the beach, but walking distance.\n\n00:01:55:09 - 00:01:59:19\nAnd we loved to go to the beach.\n\n00:01:59:19 - 00:02:01:11\nThat was our summer spot.\n\n00:02:01:11 - 00:02:03:11\nMy father had a garden there.\n\n00:02:03:11 - 00:02:05:22\nOur front yard was all garden.\n\n00:02:05:22 - 00:02:10:22\nHe had corn, he had beans,\rhe had tomatoes, everything.\n\n00:02:10:22 - 00:02:15:17\nHe had a fish pond, which was one of\rthe things they were prided themselves on,\n\n00:02:15:17 - 00:02:20:17\neveryone had a fish pond,\ryou know, in those days with the goldfish\n\n00:02:20:17 - 00:02:22:19\nhe had made.\n\n00:02:22:19 - 00:02:26:22\nAnd but my father could do everything,\ryou know.\n\n00:02:26:22 - 00:02:29:07\nVenice was mostly lots.\n\n00:02:29:07 - 00:02:31:17\nYou know,\rthere was a house here, a house there.\n\n00:02:31:17 - 00:02:33:15\nBut there were lots in between.\n\n00:02:33:15 - 00:02:37:02\nI could walk all the way to...\rI could walk to Venice High\n\n00:02:37:02 - 00:02:41:19\npretty near, you know, through the lots\rbecause we used to cut across the lots.\n\n00:02:41:19 - 00:02:45:01\nI went to Broadway School\n\n00:02:45:01 - 00:02:47:14\nand across the street from Broadway\n\n00:02:47:14 - 00:02:50:15\nwas the Pettus Farm.\n\n00:02:50:15 - 00:02:52:17\nIt was a big farm land over there.\n\n00:02:52:17 - 00:02:55:05\nAnd for\n\n00:02:55:05 - 00:02:58:10\na treat day, the\rteacher used to take us across the street\n\n00:02:58:10 - 00:03:03:18\nto see the animals and things,\rbut all of that was farmland.\n\n00:03:03:18 - 00:03:07:08\nAnd further down on Lincoln was big farms,\n\n00:03:07:08 - 00:03:11:11\nyou know, where most of\rit was all farmland.\n\n00:03:11:11 - 00:03:16:15\nAnd everyone was really,\ryou know, short of money all around.\n\n00:03:16:15 - 00:03:21:07\nBut we managed very well\rbecause I think we shared\n\n00:03:21:07 - 00:03:26:20\nand they had a big I can remember\ra big bean field across the street.\n\n00:03:26:20 - 00:03:28:21\nAnd we would go to the bean field  \n\n00:03:28:21 - 00:03:33:11\nafter they would harvest the beans,\rthey would leave all these big piles of\n\n00:03:33:11 - 00:03:38:00\nshells and stuff and we would get in there\rand, and find beans.\n\n00:03:38:00 - 00:03:40:00\nSo it's put the kids up there\n\n00:03:40:00 - 00:03:43:10\nand I remember losing my shoe.\n\n00:03:43:10 - 00:03:45:21\nWell, one of the main things\n\n00:03:45:21 - 00:03:49:22\nabout losing my shoe in the\rin this bean field, but we would\n\n00:03:49:22 - 00:03:54:20\nthey were very conscientious and,\ryou know, they gave to one another.\n\n00:03:54:20 - 00:03:56:13\nThey were able to survive.\n\n00:03:56:13 - 00:04:01:14\nBut I can remember Venice Pier.\rVenice Pier was spectacular.\n\n00:04:01:14 - 00:04:06:00\nWe had the funhouse\rand you could go in the funhouse for $0.10\n\n00:04:06:00 - 00:04:11:03\nand spend the day\rbecause they had a hundred rides inside\n\n00:04:11:03 - 00:04:15:10\nthe it had all different rides\rinside this funhouse.\n\n00:04:15:10 - 00:04:20:07\nAnd so you just ride all these\rthe real rides they had the flat\n\n00:04:20:07 - 00:04:22:23\nthat spin around\rand threw the people off,\n\n00:04:22:23 - 00:04:26:07\nthat type of thing,\rand a little cars going around.\n\n00:04:26:07 - 00:04:29:11\nBut my mother used to take us to the\rto the funhouse\n\n00:04:29:11 - 00:04:33:21\nand she’d leave us and we'd play all day,\rcome home when we wanted to.\n\n00:04:33:21 - 00:04:38:01\nIt's a small town with a\n\n00:04:38:01 - 00:04:38:14\nwell, now\n\n00:04:38:14 - 00:04:42:17\nit's become a small town\rthat has grown big,\n\n00:04:42:17 - 00:04:45:01\nbut I think it has a small town\n\n00:04:45:01 - 00:04:48:22\natmosphere, you know.   Because why?\n\n00:04:48:22 - 00:04:50:23\nBecause\n\n00:04:50:23 - 00:04:53:17\nI don't know it location\n\n00:04:53:17 - 00:04:56:14\nbeing the beach and also\n\n00:04:56:14 - 00:05:01:14\nthe people, because it's home, you know.\rThat's all I can say.\n\n00:05:01:14 - 00:05:03:15\nIt's it's home to me.\n\n00:05:03:15 - 00:05:07:06\nIt's really better than Beverly Hills.\n\n00:05:07:06 - 00:05:09:07\nWhy do you say that?\n\n00:05:09:07 - 00:05:10:19\nBecause it's has the ocean.\n\n00:05:10:19 - 00:05:15:21\nWe have the beach\rand they don't have a beach.\n\n00:05:15:21 - 00:05:19:00\nI was fortunate to be raised in Venice\n\n00:05:19:00 - 00:05:21:02\nI think that was...   Why do you say that?\n\n00:05:21:02 - 00:05:27:04\nI think it's because where it is\n\n00:05:27:04 - 00:05:32:15\nfor the most part,\rand it's just been a happy life here,\n\n00:05:32:15 - 00:05:38:06\nyou know, I was telling my cousin Francis,\rwho's the other Tabor,\n\n00:05:38:06 - 00:05:41:01\nand we're the same age,\rwe're close to the same age.\n\n00:05:41:01 - 00:05:43:22\nShe's 92 and she lives in Berkeley.\n\n00:05:43:22 - 00:05:46:23\nAnd I was saying we were so fortunate\n\n00:05:46:23 - 00:05:49:21\nto, you know, live in Venice when we did.\n\n00:05:49:21 - 00:05:52:14\nAnd to\n\n00:05:52:14 - 00:05:54:20\nbe in that time zone...\n\n00:05:54:20 - 00:05:58:12\nreally.   \rWhat made it fortunate for you and her?\n\n00:05:58:12 - 00:06:02:22\nIt made it fortunate because\n\n00:06:02:22 - 00:06:05:22\neverything was pristine in those days.\n\n00:06:05:22 - 00:06:08:19\nOr, I thought it was.\n\n00:06:08:19 - 00:06:10:07\nMaybe we didn't have the news\n\n00:06:10:07 - 00:06:13:03\nas often as we get it now.\n\n00:06:13:03 - 00:06:19:05\nBut I thought, you know,\rthis was looking, looking back,\n\n00:06:19:05 - 00:06:23:03\nI can say that Venice was one of the\n\n00:06:23:03 - 00:06:26:15\nbest places to be born in.\n\n00:06:26:15 - 00:06:28:11\nI think that's\ra good place for us to cut.   \n\n00:06:28:11 - 00:06:29:14\n \r   Alright.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://veniceheritagemuseum.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2416/collection_resources/108836/file/210283#t=0.0,407.85067"}]}]}]}
