00:00:37:05\nand so she was like,\rshe just loved everything about.\n\n00:00:37:05 - 00:00:40:04\nShe was a very, she was \n\n00:00:40:04 - 00:00:42:02\nvery progressive.\n\n00:00:42:02 - 00:00:44:11\nShe used to always call herself\ra pinko commie.\n\n00:00:44:11 - 00:00:48:01\nShe was like far to the left.\n\n00:00:48:03 - 00:00:50:16\nAnd so Venice\rwas like the perfect fit for her.\n\n00:00:50:16 - 00:00:52:11\nYou know, it was like a little,\n\n00:00:52:11 - 00:00:55:20\nyou know, little beatnik, hippie community\rthat she totally vibed with.\n\n00:00:55:22 - 00:00:58:12\nMy mom used to take all these Polaroids.\n\n00:00:58:12 - 00:01:02:04\nShe was like, just like we have\rbooks of these Polaroids she used to take.\n\n00:01:02:04 - 00:01:05:07\nAnd it's like they're, they're, they're,\rthey're almost haunting.\n\n00:01:05:08 - 00:01:09:14\nIt's Venice beach in the early seventies\rand, like, right out here, like,\n\n00:01:09:14 - 00:01:12:20\nliterally right in front of where we are\rbecause we grew up, like, a block away\n\n00:01:12:20 - 00:01:16:11\non Paloma.\rI grew up a block away on Paloma\n\n00:01:16:13 - 00:01:17:11\nand umm,\n\n00:01:17:11 - 00:01:21:06\nyou know, it's like all these dark images,\rnot dark, but like images of\n\n00:01:21:06 - 00:01:25:23\nlike, cloudy days with an empty boardwalk,\rnot a soul around.\n\n00:01:26:01 - 00:01:30:03\nAnd, and those kind of always populate my,\n\n00:01:30:05 - 00:01:32:22\nmy, my memory.\n\n00:01:32:22 - 00:01:36:10\nMy mom was also involved,\rlike at a very early age\n\n00:01:36:10 - 00:01:40:23\nwas involved,\rgot involved in drugs, was a drug addict.\n\n00:01:41:01 - 00:01:44:22\nAnd so our community was very\n\n00:01:45:00 - 00:01:49:09\nentrenched with that strain of like, drug, drug addiction.\n\n00:01:49:09 - 00:01:51:19\nA lot of, you know, even our, we lived at,\n\n00:01:51:19 - 00:01:55:06\nwe lived at 22, 22 Paloma, which is literally\n\n00:01:55:06 - 00:01:58:11\na block, a block away,\ra block and a half from here.  And,\n\n00:01:58:13 - 00:02:02:11\nand it was like a, I don’t know,  like a six unit building,\n\n00:02:02:11 - 00:02:07:07\nand we lived in a little studio\rand so everyone in the building smoked pot\n\n00:02:07:07 - 00:02:10:17\nor was, you know, just, it was like it was\rthe seventies was the early seventies.\n\n00:02:10:17 - 00:02:14:21\nAnd far as me, like,\rI kind of was escaping that as a young kid\n\n00:02:14:21 - 00:02:21:05\nand my community became all of us,\ryoung kids, surfers and skaters, um,\n\n00:02:21:07 - 00:02:23:10\nskateboarders that\n\n00:02:23:10 - 00:02:26:23\nwere mostly from broken homes,\rsingle parent homes.\n\n00:02:26:23 - 00:02:32:13\nYou know, it was, it was a time, the 70’s in Venice was a time.\n\n00:02:32:14 - 00:02:36:17\nSo I got into, I got into photography\rin high school, and we had this brilliant\n\n00:02:36:19 - 00:02:40:11\nphotography teacher, \rLarry Shapiro who deserves a ton of credit\n\n00:02:40:11 - 00:02:46:07\nand, um, my buddy Josh Klassman and Block\rand all of us went through his class.\n\n00:02:46:07 - 00:02:50:17\nAnd so I was more,\rI kind of like got into reportage\n\n00:02:50:17 - 00:02:53:20\nand not so much documenting our,\rthe Venice culture,\n\n00:02:53:20 - 00:02:58:04\nbut more just kind of street culture\n\n00:02:58:06 - 00:03:01:00\nand more along the lines of art.\n\n00:03:01:00 - 00:03:05:12\nSo, yeah, I didn't really do\ra lot of Venice centric photography.\n\n00:03:05:17 - 00:03:09:13\nA lot of my work was in Venice,\n\n00:03:09:15 - 00:03:13:00\nbut it wasn't about Venice per se.\n\n00:03:13:02 - 00:03:16:07\nIf that answers the question. So\n\n00:03:16:09 - 00:03:18:21\nbut yeah,\ra lot of my stuff was definitely all like,\n\n00:03:18:21 - 00:03:22:16\nyou know, all of my stuff was in Venice\rpretty much all of my photography.\n\n00:03:22:18 - 00:03:23:21\nI was one of those,\n\n00:03:23:21 - 00:03:25:03\nI was one of those people that like,\n\n00:03:25:03 - 00:03:27:22\nyou're going to have to drag me,\ryou’re gonna have to drag me out of Venice\n\n00:03:27:22 - 00:03:30:06\nin a pine box,\rlike I'm never going to leave.\n\n00:03:30:06 - 00:03:34:10\nAnd, and I wore Venice\rlike I'm born and raised.\n\n00:03:34:10 - 00:03:37:00\nLike Venice runs through my blood.\n\n00:03:37:00 - 00:03:40:09\nAnd Venice was my identity\ras a young person.\n\n00:03:40:09 - 00:03:42:12\nLike I was like Venice, you know?\n\n00:03:42:12 - 00:03:44:19\nBut we didn't even,\rlike, once you crossed over,\n\n00:03:44:19 - 00:03:48:07\nyou know, Marine Street,\ryou weren't allowed to come and surf Venice.\n\n00:03:48:09 - 00:03:53:10\nAnd I was like, literally\rwhen I was growing up and because\n\n00:03:53:12 - 00:03:55:13\nI was actually a good surfer\n\n00:03:55:13 - 00:03:59:05\nand a competitive surfer,\rand I, and I kind of\n\n00:03:59:07 - 00:04:02:05\ntranscended the borders,\rI would bring my friends\n\n00:04:02:05 - 00:04:06:00\nwho were also good surfers to surf Venice\rbecause I could, I could get away with it\n\n00:04:06:01 - 00:04:07:16\n‘cause people had respect.\n\n00:04:07:16 - 00:04:10:21\nBut if you didn't know somebody\rlike, like someone\n\n00:04:10:21 - 00:04:14:16\nrespected in our surf community\rand we were just little kids, right?\n\n00:04:14:16 - 00:04:16:01\nI mean, you know,\n\n00:04:16:01 - 00:04:20:16\nnot little kids, but, you know, teenagers\rand you couldn't  surf Venice,\n\n00:04:20:18 - 00:04:24:18\neven if you're from, even if you lived on,\reven if you lived on Ashland,\n\n00:04:24:19 - 00:04:25:09\nyou know what I mean?\n\n00:04:25:09 - 00:04:29:18\nLike you couldn't come the Venice\rbreakwater.  We had like a little wolfpack.\n\n00:04:29:20 - 00:04:32:08\nWe had a fun little, we had,\rwe had a great group.\n\n00:04:32:08 - 00:04:35:18\nWe had a great group of like, we grew up\rskateboarding at the Venice Pavilion.\n\n00:04:35:19 - 00:04:40:08\nWe had the Venice Pavilion,\rwhich was this amazing\n\n00:04:40:09 - 00:04:40:21\nuh, place,\n\n00:04:40:21 - 00:04:44:04\nit was a structure that had this history\rand we'd skate around there\n\n00:04:44:04 - 00:04:48:05\nand surf right in front of the breakwater.\n\n00:04:48:07 - 00:04:50:08\nThe Venice jetty was a good spot,\n\n00:04:50:08 - 00:04:53:18\nand we had, we had right straight\rin front of where we're at right now.\n\n00:04:53:19 - 00:04:58:22\nPOP Pier which was burned down\rwhen I was really young,\n\n00:04:58:22 - 00:05:02:09\nbut we used to go out and surf there\rafter it burned down and go and we'd like\n\n00:05:02:09 - 00:05:06:06\nsneak on the pier and run around\rlike it was dangerous because there's big\n\n00:05:06:08 - 00:05:09:17\nburned out sections of the pier\rand pylons and glass.\n\n00:05:09:17 - 00:05:10:22\nAnd it was crazy, you know.\n\n00:05:10:22 - 00:05:14:22\nSo we had this, this community that was\n\n00:05:15:00 - 00:05:17:23\nkind of forged in the fires of like drugs\n\n00:05:17:23 - 00:05:21:20\nand this kind of like the ruins of Venice.\n\n00:05:21:20 - 00:05:22:18\nIt was crazy.\n\n00:05:22:18 - 00:05:30:07\nThe canals were dilapidated and like,\rgoing, you know, I was like, you know, and\n\n00:05:30:09 - 00:05:33:01\nyeah, it was\rjust this cool community of young kids.\n\n00:05:33:01 - 00:05:34:18\nSo I just, you know, that's how I grew up.\n\n00:05:34:18 - 00:05:41:09\nAnd, and that became\n\n00:05:41:11 - 00:05:44:17\nmy heritage became something\rto be really proud of, right.\n\n00:05:44:19 - 00:05:46:13\n“Overall, from our history till now\n\n00:05:46:13 - 00:05:49:15\nwhat do you think kind of separates Venice\rfrom the surrounding areas\n\n00:05:49:15 - 00:05:53:20\nand keeps the project as a separate?”\n\n00:05:53:22 - 00:05:54:22\nYou know, kind of going back to what\n\n00:05:54:22 - 00:05:58:03\nI said earlier, it has a unique DNA\rthat was built into it.\n\n00:05:58:03 - 00:06:01:15\nI don't know how like, you know, it's\rkind of like, you know, I don't know how\n\n00:06:01:15 - 00:06:05:15\nthat that manifests and\n\n00:06:05:17 - 00:06:09:21\ncontinues\rto manifest in these unique ways.\n\n00:06:09:23 - 00:06:12:23\nBut I mean, you know, it’s basically...\n\n00:06:13:02 - 00:06:15:16\nAbbot Kinney created this fantasy\n\n00:06:15:16 - 00:06:22:06\nland, right, for, you know, this pier\rand all these attractions.\n\n00:06:22:06 - 00:06:24:01\nAnd, you know,\ras a kind of like almost a carnival.\n\n00:06:24:01 - 00:06:27:17\nAnd so and some in some, some weird\n\n00:06:27:19 - 00:06:29:17\nintangible way\n\n00:06:29:17 - 00:06:33:07\nthat's just that's kind of\n\n00:06:33:09 - 00:06:34:19\ncoursed through Venice's\n\n00:06:34:19 - 00:06:41:00\nveins throughout the,\ryou know, since its inception. And, um...\n\n00:06:41:02 - 00:06:42:19\nfor us...\n\n00:06:42:19 - 00:06:48:12\nwhen the, when the hood got gentrified\rthat was a major cultural shift,\n\n00:06:48:14 - 00:06:48:22\nright?\n\n00:06:48:22 - 00:06:53:09\nA lot of the old school\rBlacks and Hispanics moved out,\n\n00:06:53:11 - 00:06:54:10\nright?\n\n00:06:54:10 - 00:07:01:01\nAnd all of a sudden we had this influx of, uh...\n\n00:07:01:03 - 00:07:02:04\npeople of money.\n\n00:07:02:04 - 00:07:03:18\nInflux of money. Right?\n\n00:07:03:18 - 00:07:07:02\nAnd that's a big cultural shift\rlike Venice used to be, like where,\n\n00:07:07:02 - 00:07:11:10\nyou know, poor people could live,\rlike my mom, you know what I mean?\n\n00:07:11:12 - 00:07:13:19\nAnd, you know,\rthat's not the case anymore.\n\n00:07:13:19 - 00:07:16:06\nIt's like, you know, it's a different,\rit's a different time.\n\n00:07:16:06 - 00:07:18:08\nIt's a different, which is bound to happen,\n\n00:07:18:08 - 00:07:22:09\nWhat I tell people is this, like, \rVenice has got, Venice has...\n\n00:07:22:10 - 00:07:25:08\nAbbot Kinney created this town\n\n00:07:25:08 - 00:07:29:08\nthat literally has crazy in its DNA\n\n00:07:29:10 - 00:07:32:22\nin the very DNA of this town.\n\n00:07:33:00 - 00:07:36:19\nAnd in that is also like, just,\n\n00:07:36:21 - 00:07:39:10\nI think, a high rate of evolution.\n\n00:07:39:10 - 00:07:44:00\nThis town has continually evolved\n\n00:07:44:02 - 00:07:48:05\nin all different areas, cultural areas,\n\n00:07:48:07 - 00:07:50:02\neconomic areas.\n\n00:07:50:02 - 00:07:52:11\nAnd I think it's the type of people\rthat move to Venice.\n\n00:07:52:11 - 00:07:56:15\nIt's, there's, there's a, there's a\rspecific type of person that's attracted\n\n00:07:56:17 - 00:07:59:17\nit's almost like an outlaw.\n\n00:07:59:20 - 00:08:01:00\nMy mom was like an outlaw.\n\n00:08:01:00 - 00:08:02:21\nShe was a radical. She was a rebel.\n\n00:08:02:21 - 00:08:04:15\nYou know,\rshe wanted to be a revolutionary.\n\n00:08:04:15 - 00:08:08:18\nShe wanted to be like, I want to rival like\rChe Guevara, you know what I mean?\n\n00:08:08:18 - 00:08:12:09\nLike, she like, you know, like, that's\rthe mentality of people that move here.\n\n00:08:12:11 - 00:08:15:18\nAnd so if you have that type of person\rthat's living here,\n\n00:08:15:20 - 00:08:19:03\nyou know, then that's going to create\rthat type of culture,\n\n00:08:19:04 - 00:08:22:03\nthat type of vibe,\rwhich is, which is just different.\n\n00:08:22:03 - 00:08:25:06\nPeople that wanted the, you know,\rthe nice house with the white picket fence.\n\n00:08:25:06 - 00:08:27:16\nYou didn't move to Venice,\rif that's what you're looking for.\n\n00:08:27:16 - 00:08:31:04\nYou move to Venice\rbecause you're escaping somewhere, right?\n\n00:08:31:05 - 00:08:35:01\nYou're like trying to hide out\rfrom some previous life\n\n00:08:35:03 - 00:08:38:03\nor you wanted crazy adventure\rand you knew that this\n\n00:08:38:03 - 00:08:41:03\nis where the people are going to be that are,\ryou know, that are your tribe.\n\n00:08:41:09 - 00:08:45:00\nSo it's a very specific tribe of people\rthat were just, you know, that,\n\n00:08:45:05 - 00:08:50:11\nyou know, to this day\rit still exist that are, that are\n\n00:08:50:13 - 00:08:53:04\ndon't, don't, don't fit the mold.\n\n00:08:53:04 - 00:08:55:13\nYou know, people that want to break\rthe mold, they want to live\n\n00:08:55:13 - 00:08:58:21\noutside the norms of society.\n\n00:08:58:23 - 00:09:01:23\nYou know, don't play by the rules.\n\n00:09:02:00 - 00:09:05:00\nAnd I think that that's a big part of...\n\n00:09:05:04 - 00:09:08:14\nI keep going back to the DNA,\rbut I really believe that's like the DNA\n\n00:09:08:14 - 00:09:12:23\nand also just part of the culture,\rthe culture of Venice,\n\n00:09:13:01 - 00:09:16:15\nliving outside the norms.\n\n00:09:16:17 - 00:09:18:22\nWhich is funny because\n\n00:09:18:22 - 00:09:21:15\ngrowing up in that environment,\rI always wanted the white picket fence.\n\n00:09:21:15 - 00:09:25:01\nI wanted some stability\rkind of growing up in this crazy\n\n00:09:25:01 - 00:09:28:15\nenvironment,\n\n00:09:28:17 - 00:09:31:00\nbeing in the middle of the chaos of,\n\n00:09:31:00 - 00:09:34:17\nyou know, the, the addiction and\n\n00:09:34:19 - 00:09:38:22\nthe, the,\rinto like really serious instability\n\n00:09:39:00 - 00:09:45:18\nof my childhood made me want to, like,\ryearn for some stability.\n\n00:09:45:20 - 00:09:46:14\nSo it's just interesting.\n\n00:09:46:14 - 00:09:48:07\nYeah, interesting.\n\n00:09:48:07 - 00:09:51:14\nBut yeah, definitely that you know,\rthere's that Venice is, you know\n\n00:09:51:14 - 00:09:55:06\nit's kind of the outlaw town by the beach.\n\n00:09:55:08 - 00:09:55:19\n“It is...”","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://veniceheritagemuseum.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2416/collection_resources/119602/file/225470#t=0.0,615.53067"}]}]}]}
