We had local restaurants.\n\n00:00:57:14 - 00:00:58:22\nIt was quite a time.\n\n00:00:58:22 - 00:01:02:20\nWell, actually, my first part of my life\rin Venice, I was very involved\n\n00:01:02:20 - 00:01:05:19\nin the elementary school\rbecause my background as a teacher.\n\n00:01:05:19 - 00:01:09:01\nSo I became very involved\rin helping the school.\n\n00:01:09:02 - 00:01:11:17\nAnd then a friend of mine, Irma Colon,\n\n00:01:11:17 - 00:01:14:17\nthat I had met in the McGovern campaign,\n\n00:01:14:18 - 00:01:20:01\nhad gone on a cruise\rand she met a doctor who was involved\n\n00:01:20:01 - 00:01:23:05\nwith a Venice family clinic,\rand she was a volunteer doctor.\n\n00:01:23:05 - 00:01:25:01\nAnd she said, we're going under.\n\n00:01:25:01 - 00:01:26:19\nWe really need help.\n\n00:01:26:19 - 00:01:31:19\nSo Irma Colon called all of her old\rpolitical friends and brought us together.\n\n00:01:31:19 - 00:01:33:06\nAnd she said,\n\n00:01:33:06 - 00:01:37:11\nthere's something we can do that\rwill help us right here in the community.\n\n00:01:37:11 - 00:01:40:17\nAnd I had always been working\ron more national campaigns,\n\n00:01:40:17 - 00:01:44:06\nand I thought,\rI can do something right here in Venice.\n\n00:01:44:06 - 00:01:47:12\nAnd so she introduced us to\rwhat was going on with the Venice\n\n00:01:47:12 - 00:01:52:19\nFamily Clinic, and it was run\rby two doctors who are both volunteers.\n\n00:01:52:19 - 00:01:56:11\nAnd it was run out of a dentist's office.\n\n00:01:56:11 - 00:01:59:18\nAnd we thought,\roh my gosh, we got to do more than that.\n\n00:01:59:18 - 00:02:04:05\nAnd that clinic was\rstarted on Lincoln Boulevard.\n\n00:02:04:05 - 00:02:09:18\nAnd we, people would wait\routside on the street for appointments.\n\n00:02:09:18 - 00:02:12:01\nWe didn't even have appointment times.\n\n00:02:12:01 - 00:02:13:17\nAnd we sat and we got together.\n\n00:02:13:17 - 00:02:16:01\nWe said, what can we do to raise money?\n\n00:02:16:01 - 00:02:18:10\nAnd of course,\reverybody wants to do a dinner.\n\n00:02:18:10 - 00:02:21:21\nAnd this group of women looked at each\rother and said, nah, not our style.\n\n00:02:21:21 - 00:02:23:06\nWhat can we do?\n\n00:02:23:06 - 00:02:25:16\nWe thought,\rwe have a natural constituency.\n\n00:02:25:16 - 00:02:28:11\nWe have artists, and it's so Venice.\n\n00:02:28:11 - 00:02:30:06\nWhy don't we take advantage of it?\n\n00:02:30:06 - 00:02:34:00\nAnd that concept is what grew,\rfor the Venice Artwalk.\n\n00:02:34:00 - 00:02:37:05\nWe wanted people to come to Venice\n\n00:02:37:05 - 00:02:40:22\nand support the clinic, but we didn't know\rhow we were going to get them there.\n\n00:02:40:22 - 00:02:43:07\nAnd we thought the artists were the draw.\n\n00:02:43:07 - 00:02:46:07\nThe first art walk was in 1979.\n\n00:02:46:07 - 00:02:48:04\nWe were quite fortunate.\n\n00:02:48:04 - 00:02:51:12\nOne of our volunteers, uh,\rI think it was Adele Yellin\n\n00:02:51:12 - 00:02:54:14\nknew Frank Gehry and Frank\n\n00:02:54:14 - 00:02:57:22\nGehry was not a well known\rarchitect at that time.\n\n00:02:57:22 - 00:03:01:18\nBut he had a wide range of friends,\rand they were artists.\n\n00:03:01:18 - 00:03:07:00\nHe always involved himself with artists,\rand he made the contact with the artists.\n\n00:03:07:00 - 00:03:10:15\nAnd because of that,\rwe started off with good artists.\n\n00:03:10:15 - 00:03:15:04\nThey were really, they were known\rquantities, which was extremely important\n\n00:03:15:04 - 00:03:18:16\nbecause we were trying\rto draw people to an event,\n\n00:03:18:16 - 00:03:20:23\nnot just based on helping a clinic.\n\n00:03:20:23 - 00:03:21:20\nWe wanted the...\n\n00:03:21:20 - 00:03:25:18\nWe thought, well, we'll\rreel them in by showing them good art.\n\n00:03:25:18 - 00:03:30:18\nAnd so the artists, if you would,\rI think were really quite extraordinary.\n\n00:03:30:18 - 00:03:34:13\nWe had Chuck Arnoldi, we had Ed Ruscha.\n\n00:03:34:13 - 00:03:39:10\nWe had Ed Moses, we had Claire Falkenstein,\rand the list goes on.\n\n00:03:39:11 - 00:03:41:04\nAnd it was quite wonderful.\n\n00:03:41:04 - 00:03:44:00\nAnd the legitimacy of having Frank Gehry\n\n00:03:44:00 - 00:03:47:16\nsay this is a worthwhile\rcause brought them on.\n\n00:03:47:16 - 00:03:50:03\nAnd, you know, success brings success.\n\n00:03:50:03 - 00:03:54:04\nSo,from that, we were able \rto reach out to a lot more artists.\n\n00:03:54:04 - 00:03:57:06\nWe were small and the clinic was small.\n\n00:03:57:06 - 00:03:59:22\nThe Art Walk started with a one day\n\n00:03:59:22 - 00:04:03:06\nevent and grew to a three day event.\n\n00:04:03:06 - 00:04:07:00\nThe Venice Family\rClinic started with no staff doctors,\n\n00:04:07:00 - 00:04:11:18\nall volunteer doctors\rand it now has 17 locations.\n\n00:04:11:18 - 00:04:14:17\nSo everybody grew, everybody profited.\n\n00:04:14:17 - 00:04:17:08\nAll the money went to the clinic.\n\n00:04:17:08 - 00:04:20:08\nHowever,I must say,\rthat we were very cognizant\n\n00:04:20:08 - 00:04:25:07\nof recognizing the artists didn't\rhave as much money as people thought.\n\n00:04:25:07 - 00:04:30:02\nAnd so when we did our auction,\rwe gave them a percentage of the profits.\n\n00:04:30:02 - 00:04:32:06\nWe felt that that was fair.\n\n00:04:32:06 - 00:04:36:01\nAnd we also, by doing that, knew\rthey would give us their best art.\n\n00:04:36:01 - 00:04:38:13\nSo everybody profited from it.\n\n00:04:38:13 - 00:04:42:11\nI think being active in \rthe Venice Art Walk\n\n00:04:42:11 - 00:04:46:04\ngave me an opportunity\rto see the changes in Venice.\n\n00:04:47:06 - 00:04:49:11\nI would say in the beginning that,\ryes, Venice\n\n00:04:49:11 - 00:04:54:02\nlooked more Caucasian.\rBut through the years it changed.\n\n00:04:54:02 - 00:04:57:10\nBut because we did the art walk,\rwe were kind,\n\n00:04:57:10 - 00:05:01:05\nkind of conscious,\rI should say, about the history of Venice.\n\n00:05:01:05 - 00:05:05:12\nFor instance, Abbott Kinney,\rwhen he developed Venice,\n\n00:05:05:12 - 00:05:09:18\nhe had a chauffeur and \rhis name was Taber, and we had his house.\n\n00:05:09:18 - 00:05:13:17\nHe was a black man, and we had his house\ron the Venice Art walk.\n\n00:05:13:17 - 00:05:17:05\nBecause we wanted\rto show the history of Venice.\n\n00:05:17:05 - 00:05:20:10\nWe had, we had,\rthere were black artists in Venice.\n\n00:05:20:10 - 00:05:24:14\nFred Eversley was here,\rand we showcased him.\n\n00:05:24:14 - 00:05:31:11\nAnd, um, through the years,\rthe whole Oakwood area was more Black.\n\n00:05:31:11 - 00:05:34:13\nAnd, I don't know\rhow many Latinos there were, but,\n\n00:05:34:13 - 00:05:37:21\nthere was a great diversity in Oakwood.\n\n00:05:37:21 - 00:05:42:01\nAnd unfortunately, that does seem\rto be waning, which doesn't please me.\n\n00:05:42:02 - 00:05:47:19\nI'd like to think that our background\rhas expanded rather than shrinking.\n\n00:05:47:19 - 00:05:51:05\nPeople ask me how I feel\rabout the homeless in Venice,\n\n00:05:51:05 - 00:05:54:05\nand I said, a lot of them\rhave been here longer than you have.\n\n00:05:55:01 - 00:05:57:04\nAnd let's make good neighbors.\n\n00:05:57:04 - 00:05:58:20\nLet's help those people.\n\n00:05:58:20 - 00:05:59:15\nNow it's true.\n\n00:05:59:15 - 00:06:02:09\nI don't think all the homeless\rshould be in Venice.\n\n00:06:02:09 - 00:06:07:20\nI think they should be spread out\racross the all of L.A.\n\n00:06:07:20 - 00:06:10:20\nBut Venice is a more welcoming place,\n\n00:06:10:20 - 00:06:15:05\nand we have to remember that they're just,\rthey're human beings that need help.\n\n00:06:15:05 - 00:06:19:13\nAnd instead of pushing people out,\rlet's provide the space.\n\n00:06:19:13 - 00:06:21:20\nBut I have to tell you\rthat having worked on Artwalk\n\n00:06:21:20 - 00:06:25:03\nall those years, that's\rwhat really led us to Venice\n\n00:06:25:03 - 00:06:29:16\nto look at diversity,\rhow rich it would make our community.\n\n00:06:29:16 - 00:06:32:20\nWe in the Art Walk\n\n00:06:32:20 - 00:06:36:16\nreached out very early to diversity.\n\n00:06:36:16 - 00:06:39:05\nWe had Betye Sarr was a Black artist.\n\n00:06:39:05 - 00:06:44:19\nWe had Carlos Almaraz,\rand that led to a national audience\n\n00:06:44:19 - 00:06:49:00\nSo that we could bring in people\rlike Richard Serra and Diebenkorn.\n\n00:06:49:01 - 00:06:52:11\nSam Francis was\rSanta Monica artist.\n\n00:06:52:11 - 00:06:56:15\nSo, all of this expanded who we were,\n\n00:06:56:15 - 00:07:00:23\nmade Venice more well known.\rAnd so more people wanted to move here.\n\n00:07:00:23 - 00:07:03:23\nSo what I ask those people\rwho moved there,\n\n00:07:03:23 - 00:07:07:11\nyou came here because you learned about us\rthrough the art world\n\n00:07:07:12 - 00:07:10:10\nand through\rso many other good things that we did.\n\n00:07:10:10 - 00:07:12:01\nDon't change that.\n\n00:07:12:01 - 00:07:14:18\nEmbrace why you did come here\n\n00:07:14:18 - 00:07:17:14\nand enjoy all kinds of people.\n\n00:07:17:14 - 00:07:23:08\nVenice is still a very unique community,\ras much as it's more gentrification\n\n00:07:23:08 - 00:07:29:15\nnow than it was, it still has a feeling\rof a diverse population\n\n00:07:29:15 - 00:07:34:14\nwith all age groups\rand people of different backgrounds.\n\n00:07:34:14 - 00:07:36:11\nI like that there's still people\n\n00:07:36:11 - 00:07:40:06\nthat I can call a local plumber,\rand he says, I've been here for 25 years.\n\n00:07:40:07 - 00:07:43:20\nI like that anybody that I need,\rI can find right here\n\n00:07:43:20 - 00:07:47:18\nin the community,\rand that's very welcoming to me.\n\n00:07:47:18 - 00:07:51:04\nAnd it makes my life richer.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://veniceheritagemuseum.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2416/collection_resources/129356/file/242305#t=0.0,480.34133"}]}]}]}
