00:00:07:22\nMy full name is, Gerard Anthony\n\n00:00:07:22 - 00:00:09:06\nBill.\n\n00:00:09:06 - 00:00:10:15\nBut I've always been Tony\n\n00:00:10:15 - 00:00:13:03\nBill, because my father had\n\n00:00:13:03 - 00:00:16:00\nthe good sense not to name me Junior.\n\n00:00:16:00 - 00:00:18:04\nAnd so I've been Tony.\n\n00:00:18:04 - 00:00:21:02\nAnd I was born in the 1940.\n\n00:00:21:02 - 00:00:23:21\nMy first image of Venice, and I think\n\n00:00:23:21 - 00:00:28:16\nprobably the first time \rI came to Venice was to visit\n\n00:00:28:16 - 00:00:31:18\na writer who lived in the canals.\n\n00:00:31:18 - 00:00:35:16\nAnd so in those days,\rI remember pretty vividly how decrepit\n\n00:00:35:16 - 00:00:40:23\nand kind of off, off the road\rthe canals were.\n\n00:00:40:23 - 00:00:47:13\nThey had fallen into great disrepair, so\rthe sides of the canals were all caved in.\n\n00:00:47:13 - 00:00:50:07\nThere were, you know, refrigerators and bicycles\n\n00:00:50:07 - 00:00:54:06\nsticking out of the water.\n\n00:00:54:06 - 00:00:56:16\nAnd it was, you know, it was a pretty,\n\n00:00:56:16 - 00:00:59:02\npretty sad neighborhood.\n\n00:00:59:02 - 00:01:01:00\nBut I didn't spend\ra lot of time in Venice.\n\n00:01:01:00 - 00:01:07:15\nI was more of a, my life was on the east\rside of, sort of the east side of L.A.\n\n00:01:07:15 - 00:01:09:15\nHollywood.\n\n00:01:09:15 - 00:01:10:08\nAnd the first\n\n00:01:10:08 - 00:01:13:09\nplaces that we lived\rwere in the Hollywood Hills\n\n00:01:13:09 - 00:01:16:16\nand in Los Feliz...\n\n00:01:16:16 - 00:01:17:16\narea.\n\n00:01:17:16 - 00:01:19:16\nSo, yeah, so\n\n00:01:19:16 - 00:01:22:11\nto me, the the west side of L.A.\n\n00:01:22:11 - 00:01:26:03\nwas terra incognita for a long time.\n\n00:01:26:03 - 00:01:28:13\nI decided to come to Venice\n\n00:01:28:13 - 00:01:31:08\nwhen I could afford\n\n00:01:31:08 - 00:01:36:10\na cheap place to live\rthat wasn't in Hollywood\n\n00:01:36:10 - 00:01:42:02\nor Beverly Hills or somewhere\rthat's kind of movie oriented.\n\n00:01:42:02 - 00:01:44:04\nAfter I made a movie\n\n00:01:44:04 - 00:01:50:16\ncalled The Sting in ‘73, ’74,\n\n00:01:50:16 - 00:01:53:18\nI started looking for a place of my own.\n\n00:01:53:18 - 00:01:58:09\nMany of my peers, many of my friends\n\n00:01:58:09 - 00:02:01:03\nthey would get invited\rto make a deal at a studio.\n\n00:02:01:03 - 00:02:04:21\nThe studio would give them an office\rfor free and they would come and go\n\n00:02:04:21 - 00:02:10:06\nto that office and they'd go\rby the guard at the gate and they would be\n\n00:02:10:06 - 00:02:13:11\nin the commissary for lunch\rwith other people in the movie business.\n\n00:02:13:11 - 00:02:19:10\nAnd that was very attractive lifestyle,\rbut I didn't want that.\n\n00:02:19:10 - 00:02:21:20\nI wanted a place of my own.\n\n00:02:21:20 - 00:02:25:04\nI didn't want to be in Beverly Hills\ror on the lot.\n\n00:02:25:04 - 00:02:29:02\nI didn't want to be surrounded\rby people in the movie business.\n\n00:02:29:02 - 00:02:33:04\nI my interests were, as I was saying,\n\n00:02:33:04 - 00:02:37:02\nconsiderably different\rthan, you know, sailing was one.\n\n00:02:37:02 - 00:02:40:12\nThe art, world of art was another.\n\n00:02:40:12 - 00:02:43:04\nSo I was interested in worlds\n\n00:02:43:04 - 00:02:46:20\nthat didn't really exist in Venice\n\n00:02:46:20 - 00:02:49:13\nin terms of\n\n00:02:49:13 - 00:02:50:18\nthe movie business.\n\n00:02:50:18 - 00:02:51:18\nThey weren't here.\n\n00:02:51:18 - 00:02:54:10\nVenice, was very cheap in those days\n\n00:02:54:10 - 00:02:57:22\nby the standards that we think of now.\n\n00:02:57:22 - 00:03:03:07\nIt was, and it was reasonably inexpensive\rby any standard because it was\n\n00:03:03:07 - 00:03:06:23\nkind of decrepit,\rlike the canals themselves.\n\n00:03:06:23 - 00:03:10:15\nIt was not a place that people with money\n\n00:03:10:15 - 00:03:16:10\nyearned to be plucked,\rplucked down and living.\n\n00:03:16:10 - 00:03:20:18\nIt was considered dangerous\rfor good reason.\n\n00:03:20:18 - 00:03:25:09\nIt was considered,\ryou know, forgotten again for good reason.\n\n00:03:25:09 - 00:03:26:05\nThe city of L.A.\n\n00:03:26:05 - 00:03:32:13\nforgot about it after they after\rthey bought it in the ‘20’s.  So\n\n00:03:32:13 - 00:03:34:17\nit was the perfect place for me.\n\n00:03:34:17 - 00:03:41:09\nIt was, it was home to or familiar to people\n\n00:03:41:09 - 00:03:46:03\nwho were musicians and writers\rand painters and\n\n00:03:46:03 - 00:03:49:06\nother things that weren't filmmaking.\n\n00:03:49:06 - 00:03:54:07\nAnd so unwittingly,\ras it turns out, looking back on it,\n\n00:03:54:07 - 00:03:58:00\nI was the first filmmaker\rto move to Venice\n\n00:03:58:02 - 00:04:01:12\nand to have a\n\n00:04:01:12 - 00:04:03:02\nto make a home in Venice,\n\n00:04:03:02 - 00:04:06:19\nnot a living home\ras much as a place to work.\n\n00:04:06:19 - 00:04:12:04\nSo I bought a building\ron Market Street and\n\n00:04:12:04 - 00:04:15:00\nwhich was much, much bigger than I needed,\n\n00:04:15:00 - 00:04:18:12\nbut big enough that I could grow into it\rif I had to.\n\n00:04:18:12 - 00:04:23:08\nBut I rented space\rin that building to other filmmakers.\n\n00:04:23:08 - 00:04:30:11\nSo it had about 15 offices upstairs\rand so it was populated\n\n00:04:30:11 - 00:04:33:16\nwith on a month to month basis by writers,\n\n00:04:33:16 - 00:04:39:07\ndirectors, producers, actors, composers,\n\n00:04:39:07 - 00:04:42:21\nfilmmakers, documentarians,\n\n00:04:42:21 - 00:04:45:13\ncommercial companies\n\n00:04:45:13 - 00:04:49:06\nthat kind of came and went, \rebbed and flowed over the year.\n\n00:04:49:06 - 00:04:53:10\nAnd downstairs\rI had a screening room and editing rooms\n\n00:04:53:10 - 00:04:57:10\nso you could make a whole movie\rin that building.\n\n00:04:57:10 - 00:04:59:05\nAnd even watch it after you're finished.\n\n00:04:59:05 - 00:05:03:12\nSo, that became\n\n00:05:03:12 - 00:05:06:12\nmy, my life.\n\n00:05:06:12 - 00:05:09:09\nSo, it's a very interesting street\n\n00:05:09:09 - 00:05:13:11\nand has been interesting,\ris suddenly become\n\n00:05:13:11 - 00:05:15:19\nthe cynosure of\n\n00:05:15:19 - 00:05:17:18\nVenice to be.\n\n00:05:17:18 - 00:05:19:22\nIt is going to be the street,\n\n00:05:19:22 - 00:05:24:10\nI think, that takes up\rwhere Abbot Kinney leaves off.\n\n00:05:24:10 - 00:05:30:09\nWell, I think, I think that, my presence\rin Venice as a filmmaker\n\n00:05:30:09 - 00:05:35:05\nlegitimized the concept that you don't\rhave to be on the studio lot\n\n00:05:35:05 - 00:05:38:19\nand you don't have to live in\rBeverly Hills and you don't have to live,\n\n00:05:38:19 - 00:05:41:14\nyou know, Frances\rCoppola was my best friend.\n\n00:05:41:14 - 00:05:45:13\nHe moved to San Francisco and he wanted me\rto go to San Francisco with him.\n\n00:05:45:13 - 00:05:48:20\nAnd I didn't want to go\rthat far to get out of town, so to speak.\n\n00:05:48:20 - 00:05:52:23\nSo I, my San\rFrancisco was coming to Venice.\n\n00:05:52:23 - 00:05:59:00\nJohn Frankenheimer was there,\rHal Ashby was there, Dudley Moore.\n\n00:05:59:00 - 00:06:05:00\nOliver Stone was there,\n\n00:06:05:00 - 00:06:09:14\nCosta-Gavras was there.\n\n00:06:09:14 - 00:06:12:16\nRandy Newman.\n\n00:06:12:16 - 00:06:16:04\nJust lots of\n\n00:06:16:04 - 00:06:20:15\npeople who may have become more famous\rnow than they were then.\n\n00:06:20:15 - 00:06:26:09\nBut, were very active\rfilmmakers, composers, writers, directors.\n\n00:06:26:09 - 00:06:30:21\nWell, across the street from my film studio\n\n00:06:30:21 - 00:06:34:18\nwas a gallery called the Ace Gallery.\n\n00:06:34:18 - 00:06:38:11\nAnd the Ace Gallery\n\n00:06:38:11 - 00:06:41:05\nwas actually the building was owned\n\n00:06:41:05 - 00:06:44:13\nby a wonderful man and his wife,\n\n00:06:44:13 - 00:06:48:07\nthe Wiessmans, who were\n\n00:06:48:07 - 00:06:51:21\npatrons of the arts, patrons of art.\n\n00:06:51:21 - 00:06:56:21\nAnd they leased that building to a guy\n\n00:06:56:21 - 00:07:00:04\nwho started a gallery\rcalled the Ace Gallery.\n\n00:07:00:04 - 00:07:05:00\nAnd he, I just read yesterday, he's\n\n00:07:05:00 - 00:07:07:01\nhe's paying off the $4\n\n00:07:07:01 - 00:07:10:01\nor $5 million that he owes the government.\n\n00:07:10:01 - 00:07:12:15\nHe got in a lot of trouble.\n\n00:07:12:15 - 00:07:15:22\nAnd so the Ace Gallery,\n\n00:07:15:22 - 00:07:18:20\nthe owner of the Ace Gallery,\rsomehow or another\n\n00:07:18:20 - 00:07:24:00\nlet it be known that he didn't want to be\rthe owner of that gallery anymore.\n\n00:07:24:00 - 00:07:29:20\nAnd so he, he let it be known that somehow\rI found out that he wanted to sell it.\n\n00:07:29:20 - 00:07:30:17\nSo I had\n\n00:07:30:17 - 00:07:34:19\ndirected Dudley Moore in two movies\rand we'd gotten to be pretty good friends.\n\n00:07:34:19 - 00:07:37:13\nAnd Dudley, unbeknownst to most people\n\n00:07:37:13 - 00:07:40:16\nat the time, was a world class pianist.\n\n00:07:40:16 - 00:07:46:06\nHe was world\rclass jazz and classical pianist,\n\n00:07:46:06 - 00:07:51:05\nand of course, loved to play the piano\rand he lived at the other end of Venice,\n\n00:07:51:05 - 00:07:54:05\ndown to Venice last second,\rthe last street\n\n00:07:54:05 - 00:07:57:14\non the Venice Peninsula.\n\n00:07:57:14 - 00:08:00:16\nAnd so\n\n00:08:00:16 - 00:08:05:02\nI love eating in restaurants,\rI love interesting food.\n\n00:08:05:02 - 00:08:09:01\nAnd I said to Dudley, I said, Dudley,\n\n00:08:09:01 - 00:08:11:08\nyou love to play the piano.\n\n00:08:11:08 - 00:08:13:15\nAnd he had no place to play.\n\n00:08:13:15 - 00:08:18:09\nI actually met him when he wanted\rto find a place in Venice to practice.\n\n00:08:18:09 - 00:08:23:04\nAnd I had a piano on the set\rof both of our movies at all times.\n\n00:08:23:04 - 00:08:26:15\nAnd he just, you know,\rwho wouldn't want to play for other people\n\n00:08:26:15 - 00:08:30:09\nif they've spent their life\ras a concert pianist?\n\n00:08:30:09 - 00:08:34:23\nSo I said, “Dudley, you need a place\rto play and I need a place to eat,\n\n00:08:34:23 - 00:08:38:09\nand the building across the street\rfrom me is up for sale\n\n00:08:38:09 - 00:08:41:13\nor it's not up for sale,\rbut I happen to know that can be bought.\n\n00:08:41:13 - 00:08:45:09\nI tell you what, I'll buy the building\rif you want to be\n\n00:08:45:09 - 00:08:49:16\na part of the restaurant\rand we'll do a restaurant.”\n\n00:08:49:16 - 00:08:52:18\nAnd he said, “Okay, Tony.”\n\n00:08:52:18 - 00:08:56:13\nAnd that's how 72 was born.\n\n00:08:56:13 - 00:08:59:00\nI had never run or owned a restaurant.\n\n00:08:59:00 - 00:09:03:12\nI didn't know anything\rabout the restaurant business, and\n\n00:09:03:12 - 00:09:08:08\nI certainly wouldn't know how to\n\n00:09:08:08 - 00:09:10:11\ngive people what they want.\n\n00:09:10:11 - 00:09:11:22\nBut I knew what I wanted.\n\n00:09:11:22 - 00:09:15:15\nI knew what kind of food\rI liked, a new kind of service I liked.\n\n00:09:15:15 - 00:09:17:18\nI knew what kind of architecture I liked.\n\n00:09:17:18 - 00:09:20:15\nI knew, I knew what I liked.\n\n00:09:20:15 - 00:09:23:19\nI knew what kind of salt\rand pepper shakers I liked.\n\n00:09:23:19 - 00:09:26:12\nSo I said, “I’ll take care of the restaurant\n\n00:09:26:12 - 00:09:29:20\nbusiness or populating it.\n\n00:09:29:20 - 00:09:31:16\nAnd, um, what do you think?”\n\n00:09:31:16 - 00:09:32:22\nHe said, “Let's go.”\n\n00:09:32:22 - 00:09:36:14\nSo that's what, that's how 72 was born.\n\n00:09:36:14 - 00:09:39:13\nThe manager\n\n00:09:39:13 - 00:09:42:21\nthat I hired was a waitress\n\n00:09:42:21 - 00:09:44:03\nat another restaurant in Venice.\n\n00:09:44:03 - 00:09:48:22\nThere were only probably, in that year\rwe opened, whatever it was\n\n00:09:48:22 - 00:09:51:11\nthe late 80’s,\n\n00:09:51:11 - 00:09:52:13\nthey were probably only\n\n00:09:52:13 - 00:09:56:05\ntwo decent restaurants in Venice.\n\n00:09:56:05 - 00:09:57:23\nThere were none on Abbot Kinney.\n\n00:09:57:23 - 00:10:02:10\nAbbot Kennedy had not even become\rAbbot Kinney yet it was Washington Way\n\n00:10:02:10 - 00:10:06:21\nor something like that,\rmostly populated with\n\n00:10:06:21 - 00:10:08:20\nkind of crappy old beach houses\n\n00:10:08:20 - 00:10:13:01\nthat were not even commercially viable.\n\n00:10:13:01 - 00:10:17:09\nSo, there were only a couple of restaurants in Venice.\n\n00:10:17:09 - 00:10:20:02\nAnd once again, you know, people said,\n\n00:10:20:02 - 00:10:21:18\n“Why are you doing a restaurant in Venice?\n\n00:10:21:18 - 00:10:25:01\nYou know, it's\rlike so far away from everything.”\n\n00:10:25:01 - 00:10:27:03\nI used to say, well, what's it far away from?\n\n00:10:27:03 - 00:10:29:06\nYou know, it's\rfar away from Beverly Hills?\n\n00:10:29:06 - 00:10:32:20\nThat's not bad.  \rIs it far away from Hollywood?\n\n00:10:32:20 - 00:10:35:20\nWhat's wrong with that?” So anyway,\n\n00:10:35:20 - 00:10:38:20\nso that's how 72 was born.\n\n00:10:38:20 - 00:10:41:19\nWe hired a chef from a\n\n00:10:41:19 - 00:10:44:11\nlike, a deli in Hollywood.\n\n00:10:44:11 - 00:10:46:11\nHe wasn't a famous chef.\n\n00:10:46:11 - 00:10:50:08\nAnd he said to me, \r“Well, what do you want, me...\n\n00:10:50:08 - 00:10:52:14\nWhat do you want to put on the menu?”\n\n00:10:52:14 - 00:10:55:08\nAnd I said, “Well,\n\n00:10:55:08 - 00:10:56:02\nanything you want.”\n\n00:10:56:02 - 00:10:59:07\nI said, but I'll tell you what I like.\n\n00:10:59:07 - 00:11:02:10\nI like chili.\n\n00:11:02:10 - 00:11:05:17\nI like...\n\n00:11:05:17 - 00:11:08:17\nWhat else did I tell him I liked?\n\n00:11:08:17 - 00:11:11:02\nI told him a few things I liked\rand I said,\n\n00:11:11:02 - 00:11:14:02\nBut there's one thing I like that\rI can never get in a restaurant\n\n00:11:14:02 - 00:11:16:14\nand it's meatloaf\n\n00:11:16:14 - 00:11:18:16\nand it was sensational.\n\n00:11:18:16 - 00:11:22:16\nAnd it put the restaurant\ron the international map.\n\n00:11:22:16 - 00:11:28:02\nAnd anybody who has ever eaten at 72 asks,\n\n00:11:28:02 - 00:11:30:07\n“Do you still, can I still get the meatloaf?”\n\n00:11:30:07 - 00:11:32:15\nBecause the meatloaf\rwas absolutely fabulous\n\n00:11:32:15 - 00:11:36:02\nand it just became famous\rand it put what they call comfort\n\n00:11:36:02 - 00:11:40:07\nfood, today\rpretty much on the national map.\n\n00:11:40:07 - 00:11:42:04\nAnd so\n\n00:11:42:04 - 00:11:44:19\nMarket Street meatloaf\rjust became a legend.\n\n00:11:44:19 - 00:11:48:18\nI think by being in Venice\rand living and working here\n\n00:11:48:18 - 00:11:52:00\nthe way I am, I have\n\n00:11:52:00 - 00:11:57:09\nI have pretty much\rprotected myself from being\n\n00:11:57:09 - 00:11:59:03\nfawned over, treated,\n\n00:11:59:03 - 00:12:02:19\nspecially, moved to the head of the line,\n\n00:12:02:19 - 00:12:05:18\nlaughed at my jokes,\n\n00:12:05:18 - 00:12:10:14\nall the things, all the terrible things\rthat happened to you when you were famous.\n\n00:12:10:14 - 00:12:12:17\nThey are truly a curse\n\n00:12:12:17 - 00:12:17:04\nfor the people that they're visited upon.\n\n00:12:17:04 - 00:12:20:04\nI don't get recognized\rwalking down the street here.\n\n00:12:20:04 - 00:12:24:13\nI think if I had continued\rto live in movieland of Hollywood\n\n00:12:24:13 - 00:12:28:19\nor Beverly Hills or wherever,\rit would have been a different thing.\n\n00:12:28:19 - 00:12:29:16\nI would have been,\n\n00:12:29:16 - 00:12:32:07\nI would have been,\rand I don't mean recognized by people\n\n00:12:32:07 - 00:12:33:04\nthat want my autograph.\n\n00:12:33:04 - 00:12:35:15\nI mean recognized by all the other people\n\n00:12:35:15 - 00:12:37:19\nin the movie business\rwho live in those places.\n\n00:12:37:19 - 00:12:42:10\nI was just been part of that club.\n\n00:12:42:10 - 00:12:49:17\nSo I'm not much, I have to admit that people\n\n00:12:49:17 - 00:12:52:19\ncould make the case that I'm a part\rthe club here\n\n00:12:52:19 - 00:12:56:23\nbecause I've been here so long\rand because the restaurant was so famous\n\n00:12:56:23 - 00:13:00:17\nand because my studio was so well\rknown for what it is.\n\n00:13:00:17 - 00:13:06:14\nBut as a person, I think I've been pretty\rsuccessful at being just another one.\n\n00:13:06:14 - 00:13:08:12\nI'm just another person.\n\n00:13:08:12 - 00:13:11:20\nAnd so I think\n\n00:13:11:20 - 00:13:16:20\nI think that it's kept my head\rpretty small.\n\n00:13:16:20 - 00:13:18:19\nI could be wrong.\n\n00:13:18:19 - 00:13:22:06\nI think the changes in Venice\rthat I both look,\n\n00:13:22:06 - 00:13:27:13\nI both foresee and look forward to and\n\n00:13:27:13 - 00:13:32:00\ndon't know what I'm talking about because\rI don't know what's going to happen.\n\n00:13:32:00 - 00:13:33:03\nNobody does.\n\n00:13:33:03 - 00:13:37:09\nBut I think the changes in the Venice\rthat I inhabit,\n\n00:13:37:09 - 00:13:41:07\nwhich is Market Street, Windward,\n\n00:13:41:07 - 00:13:43:16\nthe Windward Circle\n\n00:13:43:16 - 00:13:47:05\nand the neighbors\n\n00:13:47:05 - 00:13:51:01\nnorth of us up to\n\n00:13:51:01 - 00:13:53:04\na few blocks from here, Rose.\n\n00:13:53:04 - 00:13:56:11\nThere's a whole block of people\rthat live in that,\n\n00:13:56:11 - 00:14:00:13\nthat part of Venice.\n\n00:14:00:13 - 00:14:01:15\nI think they're in\n\n00:14:01:15 - 00:14:08:14\nfor a renaissance of community and\n\n00:14:08:14 - 00:14:11:16\nif you will, good taste, I think.\n\n00:14:11:16 - 00:14:16:06\nI think gradually interesting\rarchitecture, interesting\n\n00:14:16:06 - 00:14:20:21\nenterprise, interesting commerce,\n\n00:14:20:21 - 00:14:23:22\ninteresting behavior,\n\n00:14:23:22 - 00:14:27:20\nand some really \rkind of surprising possibilities\n\n00:14:27:20 - 00:14:31:08\nare, are in store.\n\n00:14:31:08 - 00:14:33:12\nAnd I don't know what,\rbut it's going to be\n\n00:14:33:12 - 00:14:37:07\nI think it's going to be\rall pretty much for the good.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://veniceheritagemuseum.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2416/collection_resources/119608/file/225693#t=0.0,897.64267"}]}]}]}
